This sucks, I was hoping to do my annual coastal drive in July. RIP
My fiancee is pursuing her master's so we won't honeymoon til December. Was planning on taking a short trip there after my wedding in early September. Never been.
Not the first time massive sections of canyon/hill has sheared off to denude the landscape in late May / June. I couldn't find the vid, but there was one where a massive beautiful mansion took a dive into a giant landslide in S Cali in the late 90s iirc.

La Conchita has been an active slide for centuries, they re-routed the pony express because of it. That was a weird day in 2005, we had tornadoes that morning in both the Ventura and Santa Clara river bottoms. I was working in Santa Barbara but luckily stayed home that day. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023.

Took the drive from Pacifica to San Simeon for the first time on my honeymoon 10 years ago. It was awesome, but it was also in complete darkness of night, just the stars and moon so that was an adventure in itself. That sign saying "turns for the next 75 miles" was intimidating. Then to make it worse, the area went to just one lane at some points because of construction or something.
The second time was from the same points on my fifth anniversary we we got to enjoy the scenery during midday and that was something else, not nearly as freaky to drive during the day and no construction or lane issues.
I highly recommend it to anyone, once they fix it.

Haven't taken that route for years. Last time I did it scared the hell out of me. There was a very narrow section of road that had you looking down the side of the mountain. Seemed like one misstep would send you careening down the hill. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.
America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.

Ah, VenTURA Lakers Fan, that's right. I recall the Winter rains in 95 that they mentioned for the 3/4/95 slide. That was a lot of water that season. I wasn't anywhere close to your neck of the woods, but I remember on 1/20/95 (the day of the last game at Boston Garden) coming real close to losing contact with the road that was unexpectedly flooded more than I thought it'd be. I was in a little Mitsu Eclipse. That was a pulse pounder. Southern Cali had some really good rain levels in the early 90s. I remember some all-day deluges in March in both 91 and 92. March 31st, 91 was a date I committed to memory. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL SEDALE TRIBUTE EDDIE DONX!
Highway 1 is already an engineering marvel and they will be tested to fix this latest slide and get the road open again.
But they will and they should. It is one of America's great jewels, I would urge anyone who has not driven it to do so once it is re-opened. _________________ Love, Laker Lanny
