Magic Johnson tapping into his mentor, Miami Heat’s Pat Riley, in his early days as Lakers president

“Oh yeah, I talked to Pat,” he said. “Going to see Pat in a week.”

not a bad guy to learn from, but.....

one thing I will say that as a HC, Riley and Luke have total opposite approaches so I hope Magic is aware of that and things like "world class shape" to start to interfere with how Luke wants to manage practice-- shooting games versus running for example.

I'm sure Magic won't micro-manage Luke. He's just tapping on Riley's insight , knowledge and experience.
Getting advice from Riley is a win-win situation.

Pat Riley's one of my favorites. That said, Magic don't let him start any conversations about making trades of any kind!

Pat's an adept _ _ _ _, and I mean that in a respectful manner.

wow.. it seems like the franchise wants complete disassociation from Phil Jackson. we are going to look back 30 years from now and our kids will ask us "who phil Jackson was and how important was he to the lakers org?"

Good guy to learn from. Pat's built good team after good team in Miami.

Of course. That's where he got the 7% body fat idea from.

Nobody better to learn from on stretching the rules. Also did a very nice job bringing along and supporting a young coach and appealing to stars in free agency.

He helped us win five titles. Disassociation now doesn't diminish that.

Let's hope he connects on the good parts of Riley and not the bad such as losing both Lebron and Wade.

i think that's impossible with jeanie, luke and kobe around now.

the only disassociation would be their public contact with pjax.

No disrespect to Phil, but those 3 are the bests in their respective fields and each is ingrained with Pjax/triangle. Hopefully, they're able to evolve and integrate some of the schemes into what they want todo. Because i'm sure Pjax wishes he had this team around him.

Agreed, it's not about disassociating from Phil; it's about rebranding the Lakers for the future.

I don't think he was mentored by any of those guys.

Rebranding them for the future by going backward?

If there're draft picks and Dragic involved, this is a fair trade.
