Rothenberg & Medcalf
Was in my car, and heard a little of their show. Don't know who they are, and how old they are. Not sure who of the two said Shaq started super team fad by joining Kobe, but the other guy didn't correct him either. Kobe was the result of the Lakers needing to clear cap space to sign Shaq, so they had to trade Vlade. Lakers had high hopes, but they didn't know for sure. As for Shaq, he definitely didn't even know Kobe existed at the time, and couldn't possibly fathom some 17 yr old kid was going to challenge his alpha status one day.
Anyway, at first I was thinking, "Well that's the "experts" for you. They have no clue what they're yapping about." Then I thought it some more. Don't know how old they are, but I put myself as a 30 or 40 something ESPN commentator in 1996. Would I know NBA history fluently from 1976?
We know it because we lived it and are die hard fans, but is it excusable for "experts" on the radio to no know basic info?
Random thoughts on a lazy Saturday. LOL! |

No man. Shaq just wanted to get paid. Orlando owner was too cheap to pay up and that's why he ended up with the Lakers. It had nothing to do with joining Kobe lol... he didn't know who Kobe was as Kobe was still in HS and preparing for the draft.
WTF dude. _________________ "He may say it's not you, it's him.... but it's really you." |

Typical of today's sports talk radio, people just like hearing themselves talk and have little knowledge of what they are speaking about. It reminds me of the turn of the century when they were talking about the all-century MLB team, one host said there was no discussion at 2nd base, it had to be Jackie Robinson. I remember clearly. Kobe wasn't some cant miss player in the draft. Teams were wary of high school players coming into the draft.
Shaq joined Eddie Jones and Nick Van Excel. If they want to call them superstars then they obviously don't know much about the 90's. |

Orlando was stacked with talent ffs. Penny Hardaway, Horace Grant, Dennis Scott, etc. If it weren't for the Bulls, they were the best team in the East.

In todays NBA that would have been like Durant joining the Celtics or Hawks. |

Kobe was what 18 when he joined the Lakers....he was a nobody at that time.
He had potential but nobody could've seen his career going to the trajectory where MJ, Magic, have gone....
If there was anything to look at Kobe's early years it was the hard work he put into his game. |

This just shows how much "experts" actually know. There are few opinions of actual merit in sports talk. Good analysis is hard to find these days. |

Kobe was a borderline lottery prospect when Shaq joined. Plus, we had super teams before that.
Scottie/MJ is just as lethal a combo as Kobe/Shaq. |

Kobe was a 17 year old phenom, but not sure how much stock Shaq would've put in the high school player since few high schoolers ever found success (aside from Shawn Kemp) back in those days. When you have Eddie Jones, NickyV, old man Byron, old man Jerome Kersey, then sleepy Elden Campbell as a backup, it didn't seem too shabby. The pieces would come. You had the Logo working on it. |

The definition of super team has become watered down. A really good team is not a super team.
A super team can lose one of its core players and still dominate. Kobe/Shaq was not a super team. Neither was MJ/Pippen.
Lebron/Wade/Bosh yes. GSW yes. |

Orlando botched that whole situation so badly that they drove Shaq to LA. They held every advantage but were so incompetent that they f'd it all up. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

Orlando was a title contending team, but not a superteam. Without Shaq they were just an average eastern conference team. |
