I've actually never seen any of them, but the approval ratings for all except the first are negative. Why is this such a famous franchise? Is it worth watching? _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:

First one's fun, second one has iconic villain and is fun as well
Third is just entertaining action adventure movie, not on same level as the earlier two
Fourth is eghhh
Fifth just came out, haven't seen it yet.
Would you say it's worth watching the first three then?
Check out the first one, if you like it then yeah watch the second and third too
The soundtrack by hans zimmer is in many people's top favorites.
I think it was popular because of likable characters, funny dialogues, tropical setting and the great cast. And the soundtrack of course. but ymmv
crazy to think it was all based on that disney land ride
Oh, I didn't know the ride came first. I thought the ride was based on the movie. _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:

John Hammond: All major theme parks have had delays. When they opened Disneyland in 1956, nothing worked!
Ian Malcolm: Yeah John, but if the Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don't eat the tourists. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” ― Elie Wiesel

I haven't watched that movie in years, but at the time I was struck by how much it borrowed from the old PC game Pirates! by Sid Meier. It's been years now, so I couldn't give you a specific example. But I remember thinking how strange it was that a Hollywood blockbuster was based on a theme park ride and influenced by an old computer game.
The first one is legitimately good. I feel that that movie would be much more respected if they never made the sequels.
The second one and third one were filmed back to back, so they are kinda connected. This is when the story became sorta confusing and incoherent, and the CGI was upped to infinity. It had good moments but I think they tried to do too much (not too different from Spider-Man 3 which came out the same year as the third).
I never saw the fourth one because the third one felt conclusive. Plus, half of the original cast left, and replaced with new characters.
I do feel inclined to watch the last one, but I'll have to see the fourth one before I do.

The first 3 movies have very positive "audience" scores. The audience pays to see the movies, the critics get paid to see movies. It's similar to why espn slobbers all over LBJ and his advanced stats, but Kobe got the fans around the world. They're measuring different things.

Oh, I see. So sort of like the Transformers franchise? _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:
The first Pirates film was a lot better than the first Transformers film. The analogy that jumps to mind for me is the Lethal Weapon series. Each one got a little bit weaker, but if you loved the characters, you went along for the ride.

That's a fair analogy, although I would say the first pirates was not nearly as good as the first lethal weapon. Not as bad as transformers, but it did feature Johnny Depp doing his best ever, "let me play this as ask deliberately awfully as I can and I bet they still call it art" shtick. _________________ “We must always take sides. There have been very few films that weren't better than Transformers. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

There aren't many movies out there that can appeal equally to just about every age group. Parents are always looking for a movie they can take their youngsters too which they themselves will enjoy as well. One of the reasons Pixar and the recent run of animated films (with some adult themes) have done so well. Pirates hit on that, which is one of the major reasons why it continues to be so successful. _________________ LakersGround's Terms of Service

First one is probably the best one of the bunch. Second one started to fall off significantly and the third one was pure trash. Every thing now is a pure cash grab. Not worth seeing beyond the first movie IMO.

Lethal Weapon is the closest I can get. The first Die Hard is a cultural classic that profoundly influenced the whole action movie genre, but otherwise the trajectory of the series is similar. The first Highlander wasn't as good as the first Pirates, and then that series dropped off really, really fast. The Dirty Harry series isn't far off.

I enjoyed the first one and its the only one I'll watch if it's on tv. second was ok, third was bad and didn't bother with the 4th. won't watch the newest one, either.
Candy, everyones' tastes are different, I'm reasonably sure that had you been actually interested, you would have seen at least one of them by now.
Also, I'm reasonably sure if you listed your top ten favorite movies of the last 10 years, I could pick at least one of them that is worse than the first POTC...

I think its odd when people ask if it's "worth it" to watch a movie. Even if it's STILL in theaters and you have to fork over a few bucks to watch the damn thing... is it really that difficult to spare 2 hours (and 20 bucks) out of your busy and important life to plop your azz down and take in a movie?
CC, if you're expecting an Oscar-worthy motion picture, prepare to be let down.
If it's a few laughs and some decent entertainment you want... watch the damn thing. Or don't.
Some of the fun was spotting the easter eggs from the ride and connecting SOME of the dots. _________________ "Dread it, run from it... destiny arrives all the same."
