Hopefully the sweep is a wakeup call and we actually retool this off-season.

You (literally) cannot win a series scoring 3 goals in 4 games.

They only gave up 7 goals in 4 games which is pretty strong defensively. But with an offense that anemic it doesn't matter and Vegas to my knowledge is not known as a lockdown defensive team.

I think we need more speed, I watch a lot of the other teams in the playoffs and their forwards and centers seem a lot faster but I admit to not being a hockey expert.

Vegas was the better team all year. The result was not a surprise, although I would've though the Kings would've put up a bigger fight than they did.

We need more skill than speed. The 3rd and 4th liners COULD NOT MAKE A PASS without a turnover.

Still stings to think that they went 4 and out in such fashion. Wan't expecting the cup or anything, but I was at least hoping for some noise.

Knights are a high scoring team and I donít think they have been elite defensively but theyíre not bad on that end either and Fleury has been outstanding this season. Iím surprised at how little both teams scored.

Itís a crime that Quick didnít get any wins in the postseason because his play was incredible. Too often he literally had to be perfect just to keep the game tied.

Yeah, the only goal that was even close to marginal that he allowed was that shot from a sharp angle from Neal, but even that was a really skillful, quick move by him and he snapped it between the pads.

The golden knights may be the model of the league going forward anyways. 4 lines of above-average players, with no real superstar. They were faster and more skilled than the Kings, and the Kings' reliably heavy game just cannot be sustained as it used to be in a series where the opponent can be worn down physically. Vegas was swarming in every game and did very little defensively to beat the Kings.

It didn't help the rest of the teams in the league that the expansion draft rules heavily favored Vegas, allowing them to create a very competitive team right from the get go. They still have plenty of cap space as well along with multiple picks from all the side deals so they're in the best possible shape ever for an expansion team.

Rob Blake is going to have to make some hard decisions this summer as across all sports, it's a salary cap sabermetric era and the emphasis will always be for cheaper, productive players. The Kings are capped out with long-term contracts and it's going to be tough for them to retool in order to catch up with the rest of contenders favoring speed. They need to find more cap flexibility and blue-chip prospects to contend. The only saving grace is that they have 3 of the key pieces in place already: #1 center, d-man, and goaltender. The rest of the pieces need to be changed.

The expansion draft rules really helped them out as the cap situation of teams really hampered them from keeping a lot of good players. They were able to build a better competitive roster compared to other expansion teams. And worse is they're not gonna change the rules when Seattle gets their team.

I doubt that Seattle will be good. When the expansion draft ended a lot of people expected Vegas to be a joke. I saw predictions that the team would be the worst in the league. Itís shocking how well the team has played.

NHL.com had picks from 15 people before the season. ZERO had the Knights making the playoffs.

Vegas was as long as 500-1 odds to win before the season in their own city. It looked like the team wanted to build for the future more than for the present.

I also read several articles with comments like this:

Quote:
.
The Golden Knights Weren't the Only Losers in the Expansion Draft
The Vegas Golden Knights somehow underwhelmed our already low expectations, but they aren't alone.

There's no point in avoiding the obvious: following Wednesday's expansion draft, the Vegas Golden Knights are about as bad as an NHL team can be. We knew the Knights would be bad, but no one believed the Knights would be this bad.

So let's just get this out of the wayóin this piece about the winners or losers from the expansion draft, the Knights are the biggest losers in Vegas since those four idiots went there for a bachelor party and the one guy passed out on the roof and the other three couldn't remember anything...

This should seal the Knights' fate for finishing dead last and earning the best lottery odds for the first pick in 2018 (although you never know with the Avalanche still in the league). That was probably always going to be the outcome next season, but it still doesn't make some of McPhee's decisions any less confounding.

https://sports.vice.com/en_us/article/ev43m7/the-golden-knights-werent-the-only-losers-in-the-expansion-draft.

And look at the titles of these articles. They all said the Knights were going to be terrible.

Correct. Everyone just assumed that Las Vegas would be bad because they're an expansion team.

But they were big benefactors of the expansion draft rules that allowed them to get real talent that previous expansion drafts didn't have. They got a former number 1 overall pick that won Stanley Cups at goaltender, a position that can carry a team a long way. They also picked up goal scorers in their prime in James Neal and Jonathan Marchessault. I don't remember past expansion drafts where that type of talent was available.

And the trades they were able to make to stock up on draft picks as well. Of course, a lot of luck was involved as players like William Karlsson came out of nowhere to produce, not to mention the salary cap climate in the NHL along with the draft rules forced contending teams to make trades with Vegas that they didn't really want to do. It's too early to tell with Seattle, but now the blueprint has been made. Although I personally don't see Seattle being able to have as much talent available just because there won't be as many NMC contracts that hampered teams on their protection lists like in this expansion draft.

Would not be surprised to see the Golden Knights win it all this year...they have been on a roll since December. Heck, they are resting up while their opposition is gearing up for a game 7.

The Golden Knights are a lot like the Kings 2012 team. Just unbeatable in the playoffs.

Agreed. From the few games that I've seen they seem to believe they're gonna win the game no matter what and never stop playing hard whether they're winning or losing. That grit along with talent is all you need; usually teams only have one or the other.

Yeah, the Kings lost a lot of it from their Cup winning teams. Leaders like Scuderi, Mitchell, Williams, and even Mike Richards had a never give up mentality. The Voynov fiasco greatly hampered them and the resulting stupid trades hurt the team even more. Losing a top 4 D-man and then giving up first rounders for quick fixes have put the Kings in their current quandary. Blake is working hard to stockpile the farm system, but it's gonna be a few years before it bears fruit. Gabriel Vilardi is the only true blue-chip in their system.

Looks like the Capitals are one step closer to being the Stanley Cup champs unless Vegas pulls off a miracle and win 3 straight.

What a snakebit game tonight for Vegas. They just utterly dominated the first 10 minutes, only to hit two posts and have James Neal miss a completely wide open net from 5 feet away. Literally. As soon as that happened, you kind of had the feeling that maybe it wasn't going to be their night. Sure enough, the Caps got back into the flow of the game about halfway through the 1st period, and they got a couple of bounces on 2 of the 3 goals and bam, it's 3-0 Caps after 1. Then Vegas basically dominated the 2nd period, had some PP's, couldn't score, and the Caps buried one on their one chance on the PP and in a game where you felt like Vegas was playing pretty well, they're down 4-0 after 2. Just too tall of a climb from there.

If Vegas can win Game 5 at home, I actually don't think this is over. We've seen the Caps choke big series leads before. That said, you obviously have to favor them big up 3-1.
