Since people listed several concerts, it reminded me of this topic in the Best of Forum. Here's what I posted there:
Been to lots of great shows, but the ones that stand out over the years:
Pink Floyd "The Wall" at the Sports Arena in 1981
Ronnie Lane's A.R.M.S. Concert at the Forum in 83
(Featured Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, A few members of the Stones, like Charle Watts, Joe Cocker)
Lollapalooza 1992 - RHCP, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Ice Cube, Ministry
Neil Young's "Everybodies Rockin" tour in 83
Gov't Mule House of Blues in 2001 - 10 days after 9/11 Dave Grohl guested for the encore and rocked the hell out of "Everybody's Rickin' (in the Free World)"
Radiohead at the Hollywood Bowl
Miles Davis at the Hollywood Bowl, front row center.
-and what I would add to that is Crosby Stills Nash and Young at Staples not long after it first opened and Crosby Stills and Nash at the Greek - also right after 9/11. They almost cancelled the show, but they said when they started discussing it, they realized that the thing that always got them through tough times was music.
And then I will echo the Greatful Dead at the Ventura County Fairgrounds that was previously mentioned. The show I wrnt to was a couple of years prior, but was also amazing. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

Ventura County Fair Grounds was a great venue, especially if you had a Harley. I camped out there with some friends but slipped over to the Holiday Inn to watch Live Aid with some friends. To make things interesting there was also a gospel singers convention at the hotel. Made for an interesting dynamic for the weekend. I too have been to countless Dead shows but yeah that was a memorable weekend.
I can't really say my favorite musical shows there were so many. That Allman Brothers last show at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium in August 1971 before Duane's death. Yes and Emerson Lake and Palmer on the same bill was pretty incredible circa 1973. Also so many Dead shows to choose from. One of my favorite places was the old Golden Bear in HB. Saw Commander Cody right up front Paul Butterfield too. Little Feat at Richard's sometime 1973 was pretty amazing. |
Your memories are spot on, I remember Live Aid cutting to the Dead Show for a song or two by video when they were on a break at Live Aid.
I remembered I dragged my younger brother along to that show, he was only 15 and spent the entire weekend in the parking lot of craziness camping out with us. Good times!
Jerry Garcia unfortunately went into his diabetic coma in July of 1986, his guitar playing was never at the same level after that. 1985 was a great year for the Dead though, Jerry's guitar playing was insane even if he might miss a lyric or two.
I would have loved to have seen some of the Allman Brothers shows you caught, you were really in a special time and place to see some of those. _________________ Love, Laker Lanny |

Was there for that one. If I remember right, Bono was on stage for "Get Up, Stand Up." Joni Mitchell (I think) and Youssou N'Dour were also on the bill. |

One afternoon walking around the LA County Fair walked around between one of the exhibit halls there was a stage set up an the band was beginning to play. I was amazed to see Claremonts own, the reason why God invented polyester, it was David Lindley putting on his Romeos with his band El Rayo X.
Also my buddy who lived in HB his birthday was on the 4th of July for his birthday his wife got Chris Gaffney who was a friend of his, and Dave Alvin and Chris band play in the back yard for about 30 people. Fun times. Chris was a great guy died way too young. |

I wonder if Sabbath as bad as the story goes. I have a feeling that's overhyped even though they were strained with Ozzy at the time. It wouldn't be easy carrying young VH as a special guest, but I doubt they got blown off the stage as everyone seems to claim. Their clips from 75-76 on YT are great. Hole In The Sky, Snowblind, etc. They were still rockin out with their socks out at least at that point.

There could be some truth to that... '78 was not a great year for Sabbath. Ozzy's drug and partying habits were at their peak at that point, and he'd shortly get replaced by Dio. The album that they put out that year, Never Say Die!, is not very good, though it's got some high marks for sure. I don't think their live chemistry was on point either. Early Sabbath was fire tho, can't imagine many bands hanging with them them in the mid 70s.
To Ozzy's credit he actually got alot better as he got older, laying off the substance little by little (probably the only good thing I'll give Sharon any credit for). I got to see them on their "Farewell" tour last year and they all sounded spectacular. Gonna miss Iommi's guitar. Still bummed about no Bill Ward tho.. again, damn you Sharon. |

I'm in the minority but I have been to mostly rap concerts and gangsta rap concerts. But I did go to two concerts that were not rap
Zach brown band at the Hollywood bowl
Coldplay at the Pasadena rose bowl.
Those tickets were given to me. And I'll be really honest. I enjoyed Both zbb and Coldplay concerts over the rap concerts. The listening to country and synthesized rock music live was way better than the rap concert live |

Ok, ready for an oldesters recap?
I saw Black Sabbath around 1974, in the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Tour.
I saw Rory Gallagher, twice in the 70's: he was one of the top 5 blues guitarists ever...
I saw Pink Floyd during the Animals tour, where the blew-up the giant pig...
In 1981 I walked up to the ticket window of the Roxy (in Hollywood) and bought tickets (15 minute before the show) to a new band that very few in the US had even heard of: Duran Duran
I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd back before some of the members were killed in a plane crash.
I first saw Social Distortion back around 1981 or 82 when they played at an underground punk club - the constantly changed locations, named The Vex!
I went to a small LA club years ago and saw a band named Death Cult, who later became quite famous as "The Cult"
I saw Mahogany Rush at the Santa Monica Civic on the anniversary of Hendirx death...
I went to a concert that had Wishbone Ash as the headliner, with Camel as the middle band and the opening band on their first major US tour was a band that went on to be kinda famous... KISS!
I saw the Psychedelic Furs play at Magic Mountain...!
The Jam and Stranglers were touring together and I contacted the Jam about a press pass (I'm also a photographer) and they comp'd me to get in, plus I got to go to the front of the stage to photograph them AND got to carry in a huge camera bag with all sorts of Lens and a pro camera body...
There's more, but that should do for now... _________________ “Always remember... Rumors are carried by haters, spread by fools, and accepted by idiots.” |

The Clash - Bond's International Casino NYC 1981 - Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were the opening act, and were booed off the stage. Went opening night and closing night. Incredible shows.
Every U2 concert I have been to - and there are more than 40.

Been to many concerts, mainly rock bands at arenas and jazz/fusion acts at smaller clubs but by far the best gig I've seen was Hans Zimmer. He was playing in Stockholm last month and it was just incredible. Other than the standard orchestra, there was also a full blown band with him and a 20 piece choir. Hans was so relaxed and funny and told stories before every piece they played. They played a wonderful mixture of his compositions (Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, Lion King, Wonder Woman etc). It was a perfect gig and so freaking epic. |

Got to give my props to Tony Bennett and his band at Santa Barbara in '08. Even at the age of 82, his voice and energy was unparalleled and unforgettable. He'll be turning 91 in August and it wasn't a surprise to learn he is still on tour in Europe now and will be playing at the Hollywood Bowl in a few weeks. |

Went to 50 cents/eminem concert at MSG, must have been early/mid 2000s... 50 cents was just ok but Eminem was nice, his songs flowed like a story |

Sine the path of the thread has taken a divergent path from the original subject and there was some emphasis on things that happened decades ago, I'm going to take the liberty to expand things to memorable concerts. It may not be seeing the biggest band in the greatest venue. Maybe it's just a great night of music where something cool unexpected happened or you went to a concert where you saw someone you weren't that familiar with and had an unexpected blast . . . it was just a concert and it turned out to be something you didn't anticipate.
For me:
1. Took my kids to Red Rock a couple of summers ago to see a John Prine/Avett Brothers bill. The kids have heard plenty of Prine as they grew up, and saw Prine play the Greek Theater with Connor Oberst the summer prior. But sitting at Red Rocks watching my kids get sucked into the music and gorgeous venue isn't something 'Im forgetting any time soon.
2. Finally saw Wilco at the Ace Hotel about a year ago. My wife and I were going to go together, but she couldn't go and my last minute reach out didn't find anyone who could join me. So, for the first time ever I went to a concert where I was doing it alone. It was a great experience in that I just sat down and checked in. I didn't have to divert my attention to anything else other than just sitting down and listening. Which is what I did.
3. I'm not a Country fan at all. But I get that there can be a thin line between Country and Rock sometimes. My wife, who like me is a fan of folk rock and what has become labeled as "Americana" turned me on to Chris Stapleton. He's certainly Country, but we saw him at The Fabulous Forum a few weeks ago and the guy is a talented guitarist and performer who I will go see again. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know
