I truly hope so. They need James to be motivated and playing at a high level to reach the contender status we are all hoping for.
But at the sake of being a negative Nancy what if what we saw from James last year is James? Is the James we saw on the court last year enough?
Most acknowledge he is fading a bit on defense over the past couple years. Last year he was selective of when he put forth effort. Some suggesting he coasted at times.
I have pointed out before that it seemed unacceptable for him to be coasting. He just signed a new max contract to be the face of the Laker Franchise. And he was not invested? No excuses for that, if true.
Lakers have a lot riding on his buy-in. Not just this year but for the next few years of the franchise with Davis. James being invested and playing at MVP levels is a big factor in keeping Davis interested in staying with the Lakers IMO. |
Lebron has been coasting on defense in the RS for years dating back to at least 2014 if not earlier. It did not start last season. He always turns it on during the playoffs. If he goes 100% all of the time he will burn out. He knows how to extend his career and maximize his impact. Now that he has AD and possibly another max player he will probably have the ability to play with more intensity in the RS with less mins, but we all know that he is saving himself for the playoffs. AD+LBJ+3rd max or quality role players will sleep walk to a top 4 seed at minimum.
Lebron has had to carry so much over the course of his career. I recall an article from a few years ago where Lebron talked about how he even gets rest while on the court during a game because he knows when to rest during game action. |

| Lebron was great on defense in the 2017 playoffs...until the finals. His last year in Cleveland was really bad. His first year with us was better on that end |

| That is a crazy an all time great giving up his number. Some might say it is a sign of Lebron passing the torch. Which may be a preview of what the Lakers may pitch Kawhi or someone else. Yes Lebron is here, but it's going to be Kawhi/AD's team in the long term. |
