Magic can't resist being a hypeman. It's in his nature. Very little restraint. That's why I have less faith in him as a front office guy than in Pelinka, or even Walton. If Kobe ever decided to get into this line of work, I'd have more faith in him, too. Magic gets too excited. Way to set the pressure of the world on the young man's shoulders. "Leave me one or two of my records. Don't break them all."

So the fans on this thread don't need to tone it down. Magic'e expectations are nothing less than a retired "Ball" jersey. On Day One. But don't let it go to your head, Lonzo. It's not enough to just be a 'key piece' to a championship. The greatest point guard of all time expects you to be the greatest point guard of all time. Don't let it affect your approach to the game.

I imagine that during this whole period of feigned uncertainty and lowered expectations, Rob and Luke had to beg Magic to hold his tongue.

I think he's used to it having Lavar for a father. That's probably the best thing Lavar did for Lonzo was getting him used to all the attention and expectations. He doesn't feel LA is too big for him. He seems to take what Magic said in stride like he expected it.

Using Face and Leader of Lakers on Ball?

You may want to kiss your MAX players off next year..

You think James will be behind Ball?? Especially, Big Ball....

More like Jason Kidd.

Lonzo will struggle a little at the beginning getting used to the speed of the game.

Maybe go 10 pts, 7 assists, 3 reb, 2 steals.

And be 2 or 3 fpr ROY.
Will need some time to learn his teammates.

Magic could not shoot when he came into the league. He could post up and do baby hooks but his two and three ball did not become consistent for years. Kidd has no offense when he came out from Cal, either.

Talk about high expectations

Insane.

Why is it insane?

He won't get the counting stats and I expect him to struggle out of the gates.

Which is totally fine because he's a rookie.

Agreed, I have high expectations for him long-term, but I don't expect a lot from a 19-20 year old guard.

Not with Luke's 11 man rotation, and nobody playing over 25 minutes. Maybe one good thing about this regime is that maybe they'll be more nosey, more hands on. Hopefully Magic instructs Luke to play the best players more.

Jason Kidd averaged 11.7 ppg, 7.7 apg, 5.4 rpg, 1.9 spg, 38% FG, 27% 3PT, 69% FT in 34 mpg in his rookie year.

Lonzo can beat that. And he has his own brand. Sponsored by Big Baller Brand.

A lot of people would already call him a bust if he posted those numbers.

Is it really necessary that Magic act Lavar 2.0. I'm expecting a #2 pick to play well, but this face of the franchise stuff is BS

That would be crazy if he can put up those assist numbers considering we have very poor offensive potential right now.

Ball boy is too smart to chuck a bad FG%.

15 ppg, 8 apg, 5 rpg, 2 spg, 45% FG, 40% 3PT, 75% FT.

If we get Paul George, he'll average 10 assists. Book it. I'll speak it into existence.

I don't think Magic should have said that. What's the rest of the team going to think? It may give reason for jealousy.IMO he's put Lonzo in a unenviable position. That's a lot to put on a rookie.

I think with Ball and BI, if they are producing, they well get 30+ minutes per game. As for everyone else, I doubt anyone does average more than 25-30 minutes. Especially early in the year when they are experimenting with new players and various lineups.

Great take LOL!

My early guess is something like 12 pts, 8 ass and 5 rebs. But I want to see how he does in the summer league - we will likely get a chance to see where he fits against better competition. When I saw Dlo 2 years ago, it was definitely the deer in the highlights. But I dont think that will be the case with Ball.

Nah, that would be nuts. 19 year old rookies don't put up those kind of numbers. I'd be freaking THRILLED if he did that (w/ better 3pt FG% obviously)

Yep, if he's not a superstar by year 2, then we should use him as a salary dump

Bare minimum, all he has to do is make the base feel content enough that he'll pan out into a star (at least) in the coming season. BI managed to do that and he didn't begin to go for it until March. It's not a terribly hard bar to clear if BI could manage it.

Most important is that his passing and ability to create set-up scoring opptys for teammates translate to the NBA. The rest will fall into place. Numbers schmumbers. Peeps posted Kidd's rookie stats. What were they good for? Co ROY.

Just go out there and try his best. Given his game, he will impact the game in a variety of ways. Of course, I expect his defense to be below average at best but his offense should be fairly decent. I just want him to set up the potential stars we have on this team Randle, BI, Clarkson.
