Can you see the difference between a RPM of 3.0 vs a RPM of 2.0? Will it show up in a boxscore? Is the highest RPM the best player?
I've already raged on the metric before because people keep using it wrong. RPM is a predictive measure i.e. "how their statistical model projects in the future" and not truly a measurement of how well they are actually performing. |
Real plus-minus tries to glean player impact while trying to diminish the confounding effects of good players playing together.
Statistically, it's a ridge regression (the main benefit to this is preventing overfitting and stopping parameters from become too large/interdependent) with BPM used as a prior. What the prior means is that not every player is assumed to be a 0 player at the start, historical BPM (which is a box-score estimator of RPM, so you have a bootstrapping scenario here) is used to nudge past great players up a bit.
I think ORPM is generally pretty great. DRPM less so, but that's the case with all defensive stats. Intuitively I think it's because good defense is still not tracked in the box score in meaningful ways. But the idea is since RPM measures on-court point differential, a lot of what doesn't show up in the box score should show up in RPM.
The difference between 3.0 and 2.0 is that you can expect the 3.0 player to generally make you 1 point better. |

The other big assumption when citing RPM is that defense and offense are equally important, and that both sides of the ball are equally competently represented, since RPM = ORPM + DRPM. That's why it's probably best to cite ORPM and DRPM separately. |

His ORPM is encouraging and from what I've seen on the court it's not like he lacks the athletic ability to be decent defensively. If he can improve on the defensive side then we got something. |

I don't know how good of a defender he can become. But what's the worse that can happen, Carmelo? |

Dude is shooting 29% from 3.
By watching him play, I thought it was 18%.
He's pretty much an auto brick when he shoots. |

It pains me to see Kuz struggling to score. Last year he made it look so easy setting records. _________________ Nobody in the NBA can touch the Laker brand, which, like the uniform color, is pure gold. |

It’s just about time for him to be benched for Hart or KCP if he doesn’t find his game soon. His terrible 3 point shooting this season is a big limiting factor for the current starting lineup. |

There was a stat posted about 2 weeks ago that Kuz was the 6th worst defender in the entire NBA
I'm not sure Carmelo was ever that bad. 6th worst is kind of historic _________________ LBJ + AD = More rings

Controlled game within flow of offense. I’ll take it
If he plays like this, he will score more because he’s playing the right way. |

I rather see Kuz shoot a 3 than BI do an ugly turnaround ISO. |

Yeah, I just mean that he wasn't chucking tonight. He played within the flow and did not take any ill advised shots down the stretch.
He also played well on defense and helped late with switches and rebounding. |

An adjustment by Luke tonight to move Kuz off the rebound box on free throws and put him in the backcourt...also had Kuz leaking out more |
