Drums - Neil Peart
Bass - Flea
Keyboards - Paul McCartney
Rhythm Guitar - John Mayer
Lead Guitar - Jimi Hendrix
Lead Vocals - Sam Cooke |
That could work quite well in the ideal situation where they all had their best days in regards too collaboration. I think the only thing that bumps for me is the Peart part in the rhythm section. He's an amazing technician and a spectacular drummer. But all the other guys have an obvious sense of soul that I don't know a guy like Peart could TRULY meld with. Flea is an aficionado of all the genres - a true student of music in general from his days as a high school band member and a multi-instrument artist. So he could definitely find a common ground with Peart. So Flea doubtlessly melds with Cooke, Jimi, Mayer and Paul. I just don't know that Peart, regardless of his talent, is a part that makes the most of that collection of musicians. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

OK, we've seen plenty of bands that were actually bands at this point. And I haven't seen anyone dispute the power of those bands.
Maybe people can get in the actual spirit of the thread or start a "Best REAL Bands" thread if they can't get creative. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

Since Wolf will be singing I'd add Little Walter or James Cotton.
I personally would take Tommy Shannon over Weeks. _________________ “Properly read, the bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived.”

One of my must go to events back in the day. Saw them a few times at the Forum over that period. "Signals" definitely signaled a shift down a path that was not going as interesting.
On another note. Just to emphasize how great Peart's abilities as a technical drummer are. An old boss of mine used to tour with a couple of bands in the late 70's early 80's working the soundboard, He knew one of Peart's drum-techs who said that when they'd change out his drumheads, the wear pattern was very specific and no bigger than the size of a quarter. |
great story on Peart, thanks for sharing. Signals was an interesting case. the first two tracks, Subdivisions and The Analog Kid are among the best songs Rush ever made. The rest of the album after those two songs was a let down, from which the band never really got back to where they used to be - they began to sound a bit too mainstream rock. So rush's shift, to me at least, was really within the Signals Album itself.
On Peart not playing with the same soul as the other musicians you mentioned, i would disagree, simply because i think he's too good of a drummer to not be able to adapt his style to fit theirs. |

Outstanding list, though I'm not sure about Janis. I love Janis Joplin, but her vocal strength would constrain the other artists. Janis is best served by having a raw band behind her, playing to her vocals, rather than drowning it or forcing her out of what she did best. She was simply the most powerful vocalist since Bessie Smith.
Her best work was with a terrible band, Big Brother and the Holding Company. She later work with Kozmic Blues and Full Tilt Boogie; both were better than Big Brother (hell, you can probably find garage rock bands better than Big Brother), but that raw energy was sublimated by the better, more refined instrumental work. |
I totally get it. I'm just a sucker for female singers. I could go completely left field and say Nikka Costa who has some serious chops. Melody gardot would be iffy because I'm not sure she could wail. Beth Hart? Probably. Bonnie raitt? Yeah. I'm going with her. And of course the occasional sit in with Jack white or Dave grohl would be okay. |
