I wonder what grade everyone would give last offseason in comparison to this one.

- Moz at 12:01 to a 4 year guaranteed deal
- Deng shortly thereafter to a 4 year guaranteed deal
- Brandon Ingram
- Zublocka

vs

- DLo & offloading Moz to open 51M in cap space minimally (up to 111 in cap space if we renounce cap holds for Lopez, KCP, Brewer) for 2018 while getting Lopez & 27(Kuzma) in return.
- Signing KCP to run with Lonzo
- Going from zero picks before Magic was hired to 4 picks on draft night plus keeping our 2019 1st and getting Lonzo, Kuzma, Hart, & T.Mamba
- Making conditioning an expected requirement if a guy wants to be a Laker
- Completely revamping the player development and training staff so we're actually using techniques for 2017 (I swear if I ever hear one more damn E-Stim comment from a player I'm going to go blow up a racquetball and jazzercise club...I'm a licensed doctor btw, not a munitions specialist so don't worry about that empty threat)

When you look at both offseasons, I find it mindboggling how quickly Magic and Rob have completely changed the culture of this organization. In less than 4 months, we are definitively better than at any point in the last 4 years and we already see it in SL.

And no more signing/drafting guys that won't or don't play with hustle on the defensive end. I will never understand the Moz/Deng signings...and I will never understand why we had NY and still went out and signed Lou Will or had Black and brought on T Rob...too much roster duplication.

So I guess I'm saying I respect everyone's pov on this...but I can't see how your grade could be lower than a B for this offseason when you compare it to previous offseasons (Couldn't even get KD into the building, Begging a coward to stay and then letting him walk without S&T him to acquire another asset, the LMA fiasco, Moz/Deng, Absurd Nash trade where we gave up WAY too much for a relic).

This offseason cost us DLo to purge just one of the many mistakes from the previous administration...and even then we were able to flip that for 2 productive players and cap flexibility. We were able to flip Lou into Hart and T.Mamba. And we were able to replace DLo (albeit for 1 season) with a better player and a better fit for Lonzo.

We're better at starting PG, SG, SF, and C from 2016 to 2017 and if it's close someone please prove it to me.

Personally, I think too many fans, got too attached to an average NBA talent in DLo that most other teams wanted nothing to do with after 2 years of film...that concerns me...but at least he hit a gamewinner for his last act as a Laker.

I was rooting for DLo to take over the team last year and show us his passing skills on a nightly basis at a fast pace...and what we got was inconsistent play with like 5 or 6 great games, but a whole lot of walking the ball up the court and pointing...not to mention the most embarrassing play I've ever seen in the NBA.

Seeing Lonzo over the last 2 games and especially last night it's clear that he's a leader...something DLo never understood how to be...which ain't a knock...some guys are leaders, some aren't.

Magic is clearly a leader and Jim clearly was never going to figure it out either and that's why I give this offseason an A to A+.

A on the draft, C on trades, average out to a B. Incomplete in free agency.

A on draft
B on trades
A in free agency. The KCP signing by itself makes this an A in my book. He's the perfect running partner for Ball.

C-
hate hate hate that we used a #2 overall pick for a salary dump before seeing what we really with Ball DLO and Ingram playing together.

I like that we took Ball even though he was pretty much consensus #2 overall.

I love that we stayed disciplined and didnt overpay a second/third rate FA to come here over multiple years to cripple our cap flexibility even more. If Jim was here no doubt he would had impatiently locked up whoever he could get if the cap space allowed him to.

I like the Kuzma pick but ofcourse he came from the DLO trade that I hate. Its possible to have still gotten him at #30 or do a smaller trade to move up from 30 to get him.

At this point, about the same, really. But this strategy has more potential upside in the short run, by which I mean 2018. If the front office delivers on the free agents, we will remember this offseason fondly.

In the words of John Wooden, never mistake activity for achievement. I'm open minded about what Magic is doing. However, I remember how the same strategy worked out ten years ago. We have a better core of young players now than we did then, though of course we don't have Kobe.

If there's one thing I've learned from lurking this forum over the years, it's that fans are notorious for overrating Laker players. It's comical.

I don't hear a lot of overrating, there's plenty of griping about his lack of shooting skills. However Nwaba is (was) the Lakers best on ball defender. He's also a good rebounder and an excellent finisher.

B for me.

The D'Lo trade was premature and has the possibility of blowing up in their faces if they're unlucky but that's next year. As far as this year, it's not completely certain to me if KCP completely covers the scoring hole D'Lo left, but I like a lot of what he brings. Plus, his defense is sorely needed.

The drafting has been great. That's one thing that the past and present FOs has done well at for the past few years.

Right now I grade them A-.

They have made all the smart moves, If they were able to get rid of Mozgov and/or get Paul George I would upgrade to A. A+ would be pulling something insane out of their ass.

That said it is too early, A- because they set us up for big moves next offseason, and for putting together a pretty scrappy young core that will outperform last season. It is a big gamble though, next offseason will prove if these moves were A+ or C.

B+

If you're willing to trade DAR, why not use him as part of a PG13 trade OR even something else more creative than a salary dump?

I know people are crappy on Mozzy and Deng, but those two vets helped get the Lakers wins. I'm not convinced about 2 max star FAs, but would have been happy with room for 1, plus a team already blended together with chemistry for a year or two.

As if Deng, Randle, DAR couldn't net something significant?!?

You don't trade a so talented 2th overall pick for a salary dump, but for other assets,( if you don't believe in the player).

I'd rather have Mozgov and a talented rookie or a good lottery pick, instead of cap space that won't make us a contender anyway.

This is why you can't have rationale discussions with some folks...

I literally just stated the facts of this new administration since March 21st and for some it's the same as us signing Moz/Deng to the 2 worst contracts in our history during the same offseason...

Just a silly thing to say when someone is offering a different opinion. Discussion is not about everyone agreeing. Perhaps you are looking for an appreciative audience and not a discussion?

Deng = a player no team wants at that price & length of contract.
DAR = a player the rest of the NBA is clearly not as high on as Lakers fans.
Randle = contract year; risk as he may command major guap next off season.

So no, I do not think those 3 would have netted something significant.

Gotcha...so he can have an opinion...but I can't have a response to it...

It's perfectly ok to have your own opinion...and to express it regardless...and It's perfectly ok to discuss the merits of that opinion on it's face value.

Do you really want to defend an opinion that this offseason is the same as the Moz/Deng offseason that cost us DLo? Because if you do...that's cool...but it defies objective logic and an impartial review of the facts that we have to compare and formulate opinions from.

We're not talking about a disagreement on the shade of blue in the sky...in this instance he's calling the sky plaid with polkadots.

Just my opinion...

Thx u for summarizing how I feel. For all the bad grade the FO for trading DLo. We would not have the versatile roster we have now if we kept DLo.
No Kuz, No Lopez, No KCP (doubt he sign with DLo at sg). We will still be stuck with Moz n Deng with no future flex next summer. Fan just don't want to give credit that our FO does have a vision as to how they want the roster to look and fit out coach's style
