|
|
We've reached the Summer League Finale - our last game prior to training camp.
Please, Please, Please read this article first before commenting on this thread. As a preview, I"m cherry-picking quotes from the article from some players.
http://www.dailynews.com/sports/20170416/why-lakers-view-luke-walton-as-a-players-coach
Quote: | Nick Young labeled Walton “one of the best coaches for this new era of basketball,” and forward Thomas Robinson argued that “for this group of young players, it can be nobody better for them than Luke.” |
Quote: | “Luke’s great. He’s a great coach, man, and he’s young, too. He knows how to talk to the guys and knows his X’s and O’s,” veteran forward Corey Brewer said. “He is positive with them. I think they need that and that’s why they’re getting better.” |
Quote: | Still, Walton considered himself “a work in progress as I grow as a coach.” After trying to maximize a talented Warriors squad “to make that a championship-caliber team,” Walton spent his first season with the Lakers evaluating how to properly hold his young players accountable while allowing them to experience growing pains.
“I definitely learned a lot this season,” Walton said. “We’ll continue to be open-minded about my progress as a coach.” |
My question is: What are your expectations of Luke Walton in Year 2? _________________ Author of James Harden and the Strip Club

Improved defense. Didn't we rank last in Defense last year? _________________ Nobody in the NBA can touch the Laker brand, which, like the uniform color, is pure gold. |

Ask Cranjis. I'm not a huge Xs and Os guy but he believes the schemes on offense are rudimentary.
As some have said, I want to see defensive improvement as well.
Hoping we can win 32-35 games. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

Improved defense, including a coherent defensive philosophy/ system.
Non-platoon substitution pattern - this would help everyone by giving them run with either Lonzo or Ingram as safety valves on offense, Randle policing the boards, and having KC and Lopez offer defensive support for the, um... less stalwart defenders on the roster. |

I want to see defensive improvement. Last season was difficult to judge because the team was more competitive in many games, as opposed to just flat out getting blown out early during BS years, but we saw a lot of tank-friendly lineups . There is no draft pick to play for this season, so I would expect to see more consistency in lineup rotations and in turn more chemistry in the units. |

You do not want to know. They were also historically bad in some of the subcategories (opponent assists, opponent fg%, fg% in paint, points allowed in paint, etc), and that was *partially* due to iso-ball from a select few players on the team (top 8 in isolation frequency, bottom 6th in assists, etc). It felt like a bastardized version of Byron-ball at times. Guys wouldn't even run back on defense because they knew the ball wasn't going to be passed to them. If that same nonsense happens next season, Luke deserves a lot more criticism. Hopefully Ball changes all of that.

Yep our team has to become relevant defensively. Last year's team was communicating well on D to start the season, but, quickly regressed to old habits. I'm looking for Luke to grow as a coach in general. But, defensive improvement is a major need. He needs to keep a short leash for anyone failing to give effort on D. |

I trust Luke more than a fair share of this board but even I'm not too thrilled about him. He has a lot to prove this year |

with Lonzo we will have top 10 offense. Can we be around 20 in defensive category? _________________ Now Playing: The Zo Show @Staples |

I'd like to see all the players, including Clarkson and Vander BLue (if he makes the roster), buy into the offensive system of ball movement and player movement. I'd also like to see all the players improve on defensive fundamentals. Move your feet. Defend and contest without fouling. Help the helper. Have more of a position-less system where we can do more switching and where we can integrate players in and out of the lineup based on the situation. |

Yes, yes, and yes. _________________ LeBron, AD, & _________. Stay tuned.

He will definitely help. We'll also need players to set more convincing screens, dive/cut to exploit defenses, and make quicker reads. _________________ LeBron, AD, & _________. Stay tuned.

I can't say I have expectations about Walton that are any different than my hopes for the team: I want to see gradual improvement from the key guys and more emphasis on defense. We have a lot of young players and I think they'll be growing pains. |

I sort of got the feeling that the lack of complexity in the offensive schemes was a stealth-tank move rather than a lack of knowledge. I'm expecting to see a much better coached team now that it is no longer in our best interest to lose games. |

As much as he thought D'Angelo had the talent to become a legit NBA superstar, he was a bad fit for what they envisioned him to become - passing savant, play at a much more faster/modernized pace, face of the franchise, etc. those boxes so far all check off with Lonzo + his cache of appeal by not only the fans but the media as well. Luke is without a doubt, the RIGHT Coach for this Franchise and glad Mitch + Jim + Jeanie were able to nab him away from the Warriors. Can't help but think he is what Brad Stevens is to the Celtics. I'm hyped for what's to come. |

You have to imagine Luke kept the offense basic last year. I'm sure he didn't run a lot of the plays available. |
