Minneapolis columnist Patrick Reusse, who has written a lot of pieces on John Kundla over the years, tweeted that the legendary coach died today at the age of 101.

Will link to stories when they come.

Up there with Riles and Phil when it comes to Laker coaching legends. Five-time champion. Later become college coach at the University of MN. But when we talk about the history of the Lakers and why they're the greatest franchise in NBA history, he's a guy who deserves a lot of credit.

Edit: Here's Strib obit: http://strib.mn/2uN1Qfi

And here's Reusse's column when John turned 100. http://strib.mn/2eG6jKk

Had John's name misspelled in original subject line but fixed it. Awful for a Lakers fan to do, but especially a fellow Minnesotan! Sorry, JK.

One of the great ones........ R.I.P.

John Kundla, former Minneapolis Lakers coach and Hall of Famer, dies at 101 The Associated Press
Quote:
John Kundla, the Hall of Fame coach who led the Minneapolis Lakers to five NBA championships, died Sunday. He was 101.

Son Jim Kundla said his father died at an assisted living facility in Northeast Minneapolis that he has called home for years.

Kundla coached George Mikan and the Lakers in the 1940s and 1950s, helping them become the NBA's first dynasty. He went 423-302 before retiring at the age of 42 and went on to coach his alma mater, the University of Minnesota.

Kundla was the oldest living Hall of Famer in any of the four major pro sports.

Nice article. I didn't know he only spoke Slovak until age 16.

He coached football, basketball and baseball, taught world history, and drove the bus.

Was just thinking, Lakers have had three coaches who won at least four titles with them. In all of NBA history, if you combine every other team, it's happened three other times. (Red, Phil with Bulls, Pop).

A fortunate and incredibly successful franchise.

Lakers Statement on Passing of John Kundla

Quote:
EL SEGUNDO - The following statement was issued today by the Los Angeles Lakers regarding the passing of former Lakers head coach John Kundla:

“On behalf of the entire Lakers organization, I’d like to express our sadness at the passing of John Kundla,” said Lakers President and co-owner Jeanie Buss. “John played an important role in the history of the Lakers organization. Not only was he a Hall of Fame coach, he was our first head coach and led the organization to five NBA championships. In addition to his numerous contributions to the Lakers and our legacy, John was a wonderful man and will be remembered fondly. Our deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to the Kundla family.”
