If you're my age, you know him well, if you're younger, he's a guy you've seen in stuff, usually as a tough, laconic older guy. Was also a prolific (over forty written) playwright. Damn.

I always used to get Sam Shepard mixed up with Sam Elliott.

RIP. "The Right Stuff" was one of my favorite movies growing up.

Yes, extremely talented, but a real loner. We lived in the same building in NYC. Avoided eye contact with everyone by wearing shades indoors, even on cloudy days, which eliminated any opportunity for the little people to converse with him. Well, that and his dyspeptic visage. My impression was that he was lost in his own thoughts, and didn't want any interruptions.

My first post-college job was working for his agent. He was always a great guy to deal with. One funny quirk was that he lived on a ranch in the middle of nowhere. We had to send mail to his closest neighbor in order to get it to him. Definitely not a Hollywood guy. Great guy and a great body of work.

Someone on Twitter noted that he and Julia Roberts played love interests in The Pelican Brief in 1993, and then played father-daughter in "August: Osage County" in 2013.

He was most definitely a brilliant man. RIP.

Loved Sam's work. The Right Stuff ((bleep) majestic), Days of Heaven, among others. He was also great in Mud, which was probably the last thing I saw him in. Bloody great actor, RIP Sir.
