Steve Kerr will not return as president of basketball operations and general manager of the Phoenix Suns.

Kerr's contract expires June 30 but he had been expecting and hoping to return until negotiations for his contract and an opportunity to return to television as a NBA commentator prompted him to leave the organization after three years as its GM, Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver said.

Kerr could not be reached for comment. Sources differ on whether Kerr was asked to take a pay cut.

The move will shock many in the NBA after Kerr's team went 54-28 this season and reached the Western Conference finals.

"I wouldn't say it's a big surprise," Sarver said. "Television is what he did before he came on board. It's a change of plans from during the season. It boiled down to a number of things, including lifestyle and the opportunity. I was hoping to have him back."

Sarver said the differences in financial negotiations played a "small part," if any at all.

Kerr previously worked as a game analyst for TNT, who just lost lead commentator Doug Collins when he became head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers.

Kerr, 44, became part of the Suns' leadership in 2004 when Sarver was looking to buy a franchise. University of Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson introduced them, and Kerr facilitated a meeting with NBA Commissioner David Stern that led to Sarver's ownership group buying the Suns.

Kerr became a minority owner and trusted adviser for Sarver, who eventually turned to him to become GM after Bryan Colangelo and coach Mike D'Antoni first held the job under Sarver.

Kerr has commuted to Phoenix from San Diego, where his wife and three school-age children live. His oldest son, Nick, will be a high school senior and is getting recruited by colleges for basketball

. With the Suns missing the playoffs in 2009 and changing coaches for a second straight year, there was a time when the rigors of the job were thought to be setting up Kerr for a return to home life and/or broadcasting once his contract expired. However, the surprising success of this past season with a roster he and his staff created with draft picks, trades and free agency signings had swung him back to the idea of returning.

"It's definitely been an interesting three years for both of us and the organization," said Sarver, who calls it "a little disappointing" that he has had three coaches and three GMs in six years as an owner. "Overall, I think he did a very good job to put us on solid ground with players and coaches, getting a defensive emphasis and got the ground laid on teamwork and chemistry. We're in a pretty good spot moving forward and a lot of it has to do with moves he's made. There were some good moves and bad moves, which goes with the job. But overall, I think he's done a very good job."

The Suns will conduct a search for his replacement and consider in-house candidates. Kerr will stay on board for the June 24 draft and keep his ownership stake in the team.

"In this business, there are no surprises," Sarver said. "It's highly competitive and highly stressful. We will definitely make sure we have a GM who continues the direction we've been in over the last six years."

Other basketball operations staffers' contracts are also set to expire, including Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin.

My guess is they low balled him and that's why he left. Sarver says no, but a guy who is always bashed for making money saving moves isnt gonna admit thats why his GM left.

Could also be that Kerr found the job too damn stressful. He looked worn out on the sidelines. Maybe he was too much like Jerry West and took losing really hard. The TV gidg pays well, I'm sure, with about 1000 times less stress. This guy isn't hurting for money, and sometimes you think, life's too short.

That Phx team doesn'ty have long anyway. A team with Amare as it's main producer, and a 36 year old Steve Nash won't be winning any titles anytime soon. I think Kerr gets out while the gettin' is good.

Too bad for Kerr. Bad decision for taking Shaq in.

Making it to the WCF isn't destroying anything. You can't destroy something when it never happens. Suns will never compete for a title. But if you lower your standards, yes they can compete as a contender for a playoff spot.

I give Kerr an incomplete grade as a GM, because his owner had him doing stupid things to save money, like giving away draft picks. I'm guessing that another round of cost saving moves (including little or nothing for amare) are the real reason he's leaving.

Actually, Phoenix ownership ruined the Suns possible championship run by being cheap and stupid.
