SB Nation Mock Expansion Draft: Los Angeles Lakers protected player?
Who should the Lakers protect if the NBA was adding an expansion team or two this summer?

(Only eight players can be protected)

Agree, disagree, discuss. Who ya got and why??

Protected: Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, Julius Randle, Brook Lopez, Larry Nance, Jr., Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Jordan Clarkson,

Available: Corey Brewer, Luol Deng, Josh Hart, Tyler Ennis, Ivica Zubac, Thomas Bryant

In theory, swap Zubac for Clarkson.

Great hypothetical! I hadn't thought about this.

I don't even recall the last expansion team (Pelicans?)

Does the expansion teams automatically get the #1 pick too?

The NBA is watered down enough tho lol

On one hand Id love for more teams but on the other hand there'd also need to be more star talent players... There's very little difference between a 30 team league with 2 superteams and ~3 other good teams and a 40 team league with 2 superteams and still only ~3 other good teams because there's only so many star players

They could artificially inflate the number of star players by increasing the size of the all star teams...

But yeah I'd keep the obvious ones

Lonzo
Ingram
Randle
Kuzma
Nance

and the new one year guys

Lopez
Pope

and Clarkson why not.

Right now he contributes way more to this team than Zubac.

But this is a hypothetical scenario anyway so whatever

I'd rather think about next year for hypotheticals, because we have one-year fillers for this go around.

But in the scenario presented here I agree with most of the OP list. I might want to hang on to Hart rather than Clarkson. I'd be curious how Randle's impending contract expiration would play in to a decision whether or not to protect him versus someone like Zubac as well.

I doubt the Seattle Supersonics or the other expansion team would do us too many favors on the Deng contract, unfortunately.

I'm not exactly sure how that works.
In 2004 the expansion Charlotte Bobcats did not participate in the lottery but were assigned the 4th pick by league officials.

dang...thats how you guys are going to do your boy JC huh? Its ice cold being a young laker player if you are not a superstar in the making. You are always on the bubble.

You would let JC go in hopes Zub will one day get his legs out of that sand trap and actually move with some since of athletic ability? I mean, i like zub's post game. but man i need even a little hint of quickness from him. just a little please.

Well, we're potentially trying to dump Clarkson to clear up cap space... Same thing with Lopez, but I feel like he can actually be impactful.

Do your boy JC??

If he was on a rookie deal, or more palatable contract, it would be a different story.

Not about doing our boys.

How many player can they take from one team?

If they take both Jordan Clarkson and Luol Deng, that automatically clear the cap space for the Lakers?

1. I'd go with

Protected: Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, Julius Randle, Brook Lopez, Larry Nance, Jr., Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Josh Hart

Available: Corey Brewer, Luol Deng, Jordon Clarkson, Tyler Ennis, Ivica Zubac, Thomas Bryant

2. Expansion seems like a horrible idea.
The talent pool is already stretched.
The way the conferences and divisions are set up of 2 confs * 3 divsions * 5 teams makes it a nice number of 30 teams.

I'd swap out Zubac and Hart for Clarkson and Lopez. I don't see Lopez being a long-term component, and we'd be happy for someone to take Clarkson's contract.

It would be awesome if they took Deng off our hands.

But yeah, I agree with the others - Expansion is a bad idea. Unless they got rid of the Eastern and Western playoffs to make it top 16 teams into the playoffs.

I wouldn't protect the expiring contracts especially if they might not be in our future plans. I would save the rookies, Brandon Ingram, zubac, randle, nance

I'd give Clarkson away for nothing, or even bribe someone with a second round pick, just to be out of his contract and have the cap space.

He'd be protected.

The Warriors who'd be available would be: Patrick McCaw, Damian Jones, JaValee McGee, and Kevon Looney.
