Let's put it this way.

If Pope wasn't a Laker, and we had a thread here about the best on-ball defenders, the over under on votes he would receive would be 0.5.

Yup.

No doubt he's the best on ball defender we've had in years, but compared to the top NBA perimeter defenders, he's not in the elite class at all.

But he is a Laker!

Exactly! I don't remember his initials ever being mentioned here as a FA target nor as an elite defender prior to when the news broke he was talking to us.

Not saying he will suck but temper the expectations accordingly and lets see how he does for us.

What will be interesting to see is how Lakers fans treat LBJ if he joins next year. All of a sudden he's a GOAT candidate.

Hopefully we can keep KDP somehow, so he can play with LDJ, PD13, ZD2, and DI. Drossing my finders!

We will have to likely renounce/trade/stretch 3 players to get 2 max players; there is no money left for KCP who wanted 20m/year. This is a one night/season stand with KCP most likely; and mutually beneficial.

I live on the East coast and saw KCP a few times with the Pistons. He was not particularly impressive in any way as a defender. Dogged, sure, but he was no "stopper".

He is definitely and active defender. Very active and high energy. Whether that's ultimately efficacious, the advanced stats don't support that. But we haven't had an active defender here since MWP.

KDP is a beast!

KCP is an average NBA player and a decent defender.

If he's a decent defender that would easily make him our best defensive player.

Unfortunately, this is true at the Lakers guard position. Of the 81 point guards, ranked by ESPN Real Plus Minus, defensively Russell was #74 and and Clarkson was #79. Pope was #59 of 94 shooting guards. That is pretty good improvement.

Exactly, since the words "decent defender" has never been used in the same sentence with D-Lo or JC

He was not really considered a FA target because he was a RFA considered highly likely to be re-signed by the Pistons. He was speculated to be a max contract free agent until negotiations broke down.

I am more optimistic then most. Pope played over 33mpg on a top 10 defense. Nightly played the other teams best perimeter player. That he has the reputation of playing hard against the best every night is a huge upgrade IMO.

Looking forward to seeing him and Ingram together this season.

Ok, but no one even said something along the lines of we need to get an elite defender like a KCP. I mean his name is literslly nowhere to be found on LG even as a comp to the type of players we'd like to get.

I think it is amusing on how great this guy has become, simply by changing uniforms...

He was let go by one of the worst teams in the NBA and the Lakers had to HUGELY overpay to get him.

His "awesome" defense should be the least of our worries...

Where should KDP rank is the list listed at http://www.nba.com/article/2017/08/21/top-ball-defenders-nba-kawhi-leonard-andre-roberson-avery-bradley

Somewhere below all the players listed in the article, but somewhere above Jordan Clarkson (who shall now be called "JD").
