|
|
http://nba.nbcsports.com/2017/08/14/penny-hardaway-kawhi-leonard-is-not-a-superstar/
Quote: | Penny Hardaway: “Kawhi Leonard is not a superstar”
At his peak, Penny Hardaway’s off-the-court presence may have been bigger than his game — and his game was big. Three-time All-NBA player, four-time All-Star, part of a one-two punch with a young Shaquille O’Neal that had the Magic as title contenders.
Still, talk about Hardaway and you end up talking about the ‘Lil Penny commercials and the shoes — Hardaway was a break-out NBA star known by non-hoops fans because of his off-the-court persona.
It is from that perspective Hardaway comes. He was on the Sirius XM’s NBA Radio show “Bottomline” and was asked about Kawhi Leonard (hat tip Eye on Basketball).
“Superstar? No. Kawhi Leonard is not a superstar because he has no interest in being the face of the league or starring in TV commercials. He’s a good player, but I wouldn’t consider him a superstar player.”
The first reaction of hoops fans will be “are you kidding me?” Leonard is an MVP candidate, franchise cornerstone, best two-way player in the NBA according to Michael Jordan, champion and finals MVP.
However, Hardaway is right in the sense that Leonard limits how big his personal brand can be because he doesn’t promote it. Heck, not sure he even cares that much about it. If you define superstar by off-the-court persona, then maybe Leonard isn’t your guy. Leonard is not Stephen Curry showing up in ads all the time, he’s not LeBron James and his media projects, he’s no Jeremy Lin on social media.
Nor does Leonard want to be — and he doesn’t have to be. Leonard does have some sweet Jordan brand commercials, but not ones where he speaks. He does talk a little in those Spurs HEB ads, but that’s about it. He doesn’t want to be front-and-center that way. That’s just who he is. He’s a quiet leader, sort of like Tim Duncan before him in San Antonio (which is perfect for Gregg Popovich).
Personally, I’d still say he’s a superstar. However, he’s never going to have the Q Rating of Shaq or Curry or LeBron. So if that’s how you choose to define superstar… |

To me the word "superstar" means your notoriety goes beyond the sport. Non-basketball fans don't know who Leonard is. He doesn't try to be a superstar and probably doesn't even want to be one. |

There's no reason to be annoyed by this comment, it's not like he thinks Leonard is any lesser of a player than anyone else, he just has a particular definition of the word superstar. |

I get your take here.. But he also said "he's a good player" ... really? He's arguably a generational talent |

He's one of the three guys I would take over any of the rest, but if I had to sell tickets or have any promotion role too, then I would go with either KD or Lebron. Or Russ, Curry, though I would rather have Lenard's game if tickets weren't an issue.
Penny is right, according to how he defined it. |

at first glance i was like penny you're wrong but reading the piece. I agree with him.
To be a SUPER-star its not about your game at that point. your game puts you in the nba. then it pushes you to 6th man of the year. then it pushes you to the allstar game. What makes you a SUPERSTAR is your allstar ability + your outside presence. The NBA is an entertainment league. never forget that. This is all entertainment for us. The biggest entertainers, dont just do it on the court, they do it off the court.
KL will go down as a pure basketball legend one day if he keeps this up. But if he stays the same demeanor wise. he will go down as a non superstar.
now that doesnt mean i wouldnt pick him up the first time he was a FA. I would rather have him than any current nba player right now from a
pure basketball fan perspective. |

He's actually close. Up until this point he's done everything he was supposed to do at each level of basketball. He's been a top player. he did it in high school, did it at UCLA in college, and did it in the summer league. if he does it in preseason, then does it during the season. He will become a superstar.
Now if it wasnt for his dad being a loud guy. He would be Kawhi 2.0. non superstar top baller. |

I wonder how many people would choose Ball over Leonard? Despite this being Lonzo Ball's first step in the NBA he's already more hyped then some of the current stars in the NBA.... |

Kawhi Leonard is the pride of Riverside and San Diego State.
He would have been a great NBA player no matter what, but San Antonio dealing for him on draft day was just a tremendous situation for him and he has made the most of it with his talent and hard work.
Nothing but respect for Kawhi, not everyone has to run their mouth off the court. _________________ Love, Laker Lanny |

Penny's still got a chip on his shoulder, as do so many former players. Superstar status is interpretive, sure, but Kawhi's probably been the best defensive player in the league for the last three or four seasons. He has also been the best guy on the Western conference's second best team for longer than that. Superstar ? Yeah, Kawhi has earned that label. |
