|
|
Quote: | “That trade from the Lakers basically ended my career and purpose,” Odom told The Vertical. “I was never really myself ever again. Being in L.A., the structure, the people I knew, it hurt leaving. I had great memories with the Lakers, with Kobe and Pau. That was a special time in my life.
“I got traded the season after we lost to Dallas in the playoffs, and I had won Sixth Man of the Year for the team. To trade me after winning Sixth Man of the Year … what else do I got to do? Why?
“I think about it all the time, about how much I had left in the tank. I had issues going on. But barring injury, could I play in the NBA today? I could play. I should still be playing.”
Odom has been public about his issues with drug use, and he makes it clear that he’s blessed to still be living. He had a life-threatening drug overdose in a Las Vegas brothel in October 2015, when he suffered multiple strokes, kidney failure and was in a coma and on life support. Odom recently sat inside Sista Mary’s Soul Food, a restaurant he co-owns with his longtime friend, business partner and confidant Greg Nunn, and made it clear his priorities are his son and daughter now.
At some point, Odom will come full circle in Los Angeles, with plans being discussed for him to sign a contract to retire as a Laker in training camp.
“My family looks forward to me retiring as a Laker more than me,” Odom told The Vertical. “I’m not really emotional about being praised, about signing for a day. I’m shy at the end of the day. For my son, for my family, for my fans, they may enjoy that day. It’s for them. |

THIS. ABSOLUTELY.
And if we can bring him on a player development coach for our multi-skilled forwards like Randle and Ingram, then even better. |

I really wish he didn't take that trade so personally. Yes he was a big part of our two titles, but I think he let it effect him way more than it should have. At least Pau stuck it out for two more years and kept it professional. |

After engaging in so many arguments with this fans over the years on LG, I came to appreciate LO in his later years with the team. The FO/coaching staff were trying to pigeon hole him into a 2nd option role, when really LO thrived as a third option. He was one of the best 3rd options of all-time IMO.
He deserves this. His name will not go into the rafters but he was absolutely vital to our championship teams. And by all accounts, he is a quality dude, who overcome tragedy to become a champion.
Do it Pelinka! |

If it means something to Lamar I'm all for it. He's a good guy, I hope he can stay on the right path. |

I remember in his first couple years as a Laker people were talking about trading him all the time for being inconsistent. Kobe said in a post game interview he was gonna be a monster. I thought he was just looking out for his teammate.
Mamba knew. |

He's on the short list of best players in NBA history to never make an all-star team:
Lamar Odom
Serge Ibaka
Mike Conley
Marcus Camby
Rod Stickland
Cedric Maxwell
Ron Harper
Sam Perkins
Jason Terry
Byron Scott
Michael Cooper
Amazing how many Lakers are on this list |

Not seeing any HOFer's there. I guess making at least one All Star team is a pretty good predictor. |

It'd be awesome if his last game was the first game of the season against the Clippers. Best case scenario would be that the Lakers blow out the Clippers and bring out Lamar during garbage time. I trust the Staples crowd to go nuts for him.
But sadly, Lamar is probably nowhere near game-shape to even play that role. The signing would be nothing less than a formality like Pierce did with the Celtics. |
