It's be awesome to make him the only Laker (or any great) to have 2 jerseys by the same team retired.

It'd be a special distinction that he deserves.

Disagree. Retire with the jersey you last wore. You can still prevent players from wearing 8, but you always wore one jersey, actively chose to change your jersey number, did so, and now you should get one jersey on the rafters. If they manage to put two numbers on that jersey, or something like that, now that'd be cool, but no need for two jerseys up there.

Seems really soon to be doing this after his retirement. Surprised to see it so soon, but should be an awesome moment! Hoping they retire just a single jersey and keep our wall of fame classy. Agree with the other poster... retire 24 and put the Kobe statue with 8 from the 81 pt game.

Could be a nice touch to put 24 on the front of his statue and 8 on the back.

I hope it's both 8 and 24

Putting up both numbers wouldn't look right. Besides, he ditched #8. They should hang #24 but not let anyone wear #8.

Seems rather silly to not retire 8 while not allowing anyone to wear it. If you're not gonna let anyone wear it, just retire it.

Sillier than putting two jerseys in the rafters of the same player?

why would it be silly at all? player(s) had multiple of their jerseys retired before

Both are gimmicks, let's hope we haven't sunk to that level

No, I don't find it silly at all. I find it silly to function as if a number has been retired when it hasn't been.

Well yeah that's an entirely different situation. No team has multiple jerseys of the same guy hanging in the rafters. Retiring a jersey is about honoring a player, not honoring every alteration he made to his uniform.

Guess we'll have to disagree. I see it as a special circumstances, nothing to compare to. The league never had a player with 2 jerseys where each are HOF worthy by itself. If MJ had won 2 titles with the #45, I'm pretty sure the Bulls would hang up that jersey too.

What if Curry changes his jersey every year, do they retire 4-5 jerseys? One player, one jersey. Let's not turn this into a sideshow.

Just looked on Stubhub, tickets are already $550 for the cheap seats

Was hoping I might be able to sneak some tickets before they made an official announcement, but I don't think that's gonna happen

Only because he was the only one who changed jersey numbers. He was no more special than other players whose jerseys were retired. Retire one for Kobe the player and call it good. No need to cheapen the process.

Horrible example. At least try to come up with something realistic.

Neither, you would be allowing a player to wear a jersey number he wants. It would have nothing to do with Kobe.

What is realistic is that they will be honoring a player, not a piece of material.

What? The guy suggested not allowing anyone to wear 8 instead of retiring it. My point, clearly, was that even doing that would be honoring Kobe.

So retiring one number is honoring a player, but retiring both would be honoring a piece of material? You've just failed at logic in epic fashion. Again.

At least it says they're doing it before the game, not halftime when they might be down by 30.

I'm hoping they'll find a good way to represent both 8 and 24 on one jersey. If not, should just be 24.
