Anyone see this article from earlier this week?

Two researchers at Stanford have developed an AI that can predict the sexual orientation of a person solely based on their photo.

The algorithm, when fed 1 image of a person, correctly guessed their orientation 81 percent of the time for men and 71 for women.

When supplied with 5 images of the same person, the accuracy increased to 91 percent and 83 percent for men and women respectively.

Still early stage, but both fascinating and scary at the same time.

This is dangerous. There are many governments that are openly hostile to non-heterosexual citizens in their countries.

Yeah. I can't remember where I read or heard it, but also remember it being mentioned they'd look in to other measures like IQ, propensity to criminality, etc.

Indeed. On a different note, kind of shoots the choice argument...

Lol. So if I closed my eyes and guessed heterosexual 100% of the time how similar would I be to those stats?

I'm missing a few variables, but my calculations indicate around 91% for men, and 83% for women...

Well, there are metrics other than strict accuracy that people use to evaluate these sort of systems, precisely for this reason. The one used in this method is something called AUROC (or AUC). To calculate AUC, they take a bunch of pairs of faces, one homosexual and the other heterosexual, and they ask the classifier to predict which is which. 0.5 would be random guessing, and 1.0 would be perfect predicting.

It's by this metric that the deep learning system did better than humans. So as you see, there's no degenerate solution of always guessing heterosexual.

This would assume the data sample used in the test mirrored the general population. If they did their test right, they would not have done that. They would have used a mix that did not mirror the general population to account for chance.

Yup. They take a baseline of photos of LGBT individuals and if you share enough facial characteristics with the baseline you are one too according to this technology.

There are legitimate methodological concerns with this study (data seepage), but this is not one of them. That's not what the technology does, not directly. It's learning some high-dimensional, non-linear representation of the faces. I'm not sure where you got your summary from but it's completely incorrect.

That's actually statistically pretty solid.

If you had a computer that could predict cancer in people before they got it 80% of the time merely by looking at their face, people would agree that is impressive.

No, i know, i was being sarcastic.

I think its important to look beyond the study here. As in, perhaps, its possible there are cues we can't "see" with our own eyes and brains. I look at this as the tip of the iceberg.
