Hmmm... tough one to answer before watching so much as the first exhibition game. Also there are different aspects of defense, i.e. man v. team defense for a guard, rim protection v. perimeter/P&R defense for a center. I differ on a few of your rankings though. I wouldn't put Lonzo that high, I'd rank most rookies pretty low, I wouldn't put Bogut nearly that low because he protects the rim, Brewer is no slouch on defense either, he can cause problems out there, even if he creates a few now and then, and Ingram belongs somewhere on this list as well. With his length, he's capable of causing problems on defense even if inexperienced.

Just for the fun of it I'll say:

KCP
Nance
Bogut
Brewer
Ingram
Hart
Lopez
Deng
Kuzma
Randle
Zubac
Ennis
Lonzo
Bryant
Clarkson
Blue

This will all change once we see them play, but this is my perception of where our players are at going in.

Zubac, Randle, and Clarkson in any order. There's your bottom 3.

they need to play a single game first

The rookies will likely be the worst

I agree with what you're saying. I think lonzo's team defense is way above his man to man D. He should be lower. And Bogut is good when healthy.
We'll have a better perception after the pre season games.

Based off of their past performances individually, I guess. It will be interesting to see how KCP & Lopez affect our overall team defense.

I like your list, and especially agree with your bottom 2. Those guys have a lot to prove this season.

I would also move Bogut above Lopez.

Bogut and Nance statistically are the only two that come out positive

^I'm expecting a lot from KCP, from what I've seen I'd expect him to be a very good defender. Hope I'm not mistaken.

But Bogut and Nance are legit on defense. Well, at least in the roles they've played. Bogut excels down low, but nowhere else.

I expect Ingram to improve but he's got to improve his footwork.

I think Corey Brewer is pretty disruptive on defense. Not sure why he comes out negative statistically?

We'll find out a lot more soon.

Brewer was a +1 but do you see him playing much for us? I left him out for that reason. Sorry I forgot Deng he was + too at 1.54.

We keep hearing from everyone in upper management how KCP is an "elite defender". I wonder if they truly believe this or if they're just greasing the wheels with his agent.

I think that KCP is way too high. ESPN Real Plus Minus ranks KCP defensively as #60 of 95 shooting guards. While ESPN Real Plus Minus may have some flaws, I would be surprised if it was that far off. Additionally, there is nothing in his stats at https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/caldwke01.html that indicate that he is a fabulous defensive player. His defensive rating of 109 is marginal.

Best first, then descending ...

Lopez
Ingram
KCP
Bogut
Nance

It's no stellar top five list; the high ain't real high and the falloff after Lopez is damned steep and continuously so.

KCP is the only above average defender we have. Bogut, Nance, Deng, Lopez are league average defenders. The balance of the roster ranges from the unproven (Lonzo, Hart, Kuzma) to the downright awful (JC, JR)

Gonna be another tough defensive year unless one of the rookies shows they are an elite defender or BI/ZU take a huge step forward.

Agree for the most part. I do think BI & Hart will develop into pretty good defenders.

Our top three are probably

KCP
Lopez
Nance

Bogut is a question mark because of injuries, Hart because of rookieness.

We might get a bump this year, but I expect us to be near the bottom of the league again.

I actually agree with the whole wait and see deal.

IMO, by next season's end, Ingram ends up being our best overall defender as well as possibly best scorer on the team.

Think Randle and JC were effort based reasons why their D wasn't as great. Randle doesn't read well from the weakside. JC gets beat.

Thanks Mike! I think i have overrated KCP, but he is still a great improvement. Bogut will be a good on defense by protecting the rim and talking to players on picks and switching. I'm hoping Randle and Clarkson see their defensive analytics and are motivated to improve.
