Nice article Eric, it is good to see the actual numbers. They tell how extremely difficult it will be to have enough space for two max players. I only hope that the FO is patient enough to have commitments before making moves or it could turn into a debacle. I was always iffy on the two max plan and reading what you wrote drives home how unlikely it is.

Interesting comment in the second paragraph about internal fears that this FO will repeat the mistake of the previous FO. I realize you can’t divulge who internally is concerned, but it is curious that the concern is there.

Great article Eric!
I love reading it even though you are crushing my laker dream team hopes!
Why does Rob still say he has 2 Max slots when he doesn't?
Also do you think the Lakers would pursue Boogie? I personally would take him as my first choice for a big. He's young and he can dominate if his attitude is correct *which I think Magic would ensure. He would get 30/10 here with Ball and BI. If they get Boogie and strike out with everyone else would they keep the young guys and kick the can down the road? or are they gonna let JR walk?

It's LBJ/PG13 or bust.

I'm not a big fan of Boogie.

And the rest leave little to be desired.

Nor am I a fan of blowing the "sacred cap space" on re-signing Brook/KCP to eat that space either.

Yikes.

Not sure the Lakers FO will be blamed.. if all the star FAs decided to resign with there team, it's a big difference between punting in meetings and not convincing FAs to sign.

I'm more then happy if the Lakers build the team via trade and draft. Fielding a team in FA isn't always necessary.

Am I wrong emplay?

tell that to magic and rob - who have been using 2018 FA as a mantra

My point is that it's not the end of the world, if all the FAs decided to resign with there team, I rather be that then see Magic and Pelinka embarrasse themselves in meetings.

The Lakers can always end up using trades as a route to make the team into a contender, yeah it does seem like the 2018 talk has been planned and is a big movement, but there is a lot of ways to make the team better, I realize that maybe 1 or 2 FAs have a wink-wink deal with the Lakers to sign here in 2018 so hopefully that is the case.

Oh boy...this is going to look really bad if they end up striking out on 2 max stars plan. I realize they got Kuzma but it seems like they could have drafted him anyway. Just very uncomfortable feeling to give up assets a year in advance of knowing if you need to dump salary or not.

it will be embarrassing for the Lakers if they strike out and the pivot plan likely won't be as "glorious" as what Rob/Magic have set up via expectations

end of the world? none of this is - but some credibility is on the line

My opinion is that LeBron is the only likely FA to come here, cause of the circumstances, PG13 will likely be the tricky one, it seems like our hope is that Cleveland and OKC implode and fall apart so they will have a reason to leave, let's not forget Irving just got traded despite the fact that the Cavs were in the finals for 3 straight years, so success doesn't always mean that a player will be happy with his team.

Yes, though offseason reports were positive. At least they will have an entire season to observe his play.

Here is some possible scenarios in 2018:

LeBron/PG13

LeBron/Cousins

PG13/Lopez

Bradley/Cousins

KCP/Lopez

Probably can add a few more.

Would Jeannie put some heat on Magic/Pelinka if the 2018 plan falls apart or are they pretty teflon?

She didn't chose Jim to run basketball operations, so she could blame things on him and avoid having to take ownership.

Since she chose Magic and Pelinka to run FO operations, it will be much much harder for her avoid blowback for expectations not being met.

Going to the media and highlighting underperformance by the FO is something she will likely avoid for quite a while.

Thanks, emplay. A lot can happen between now and the February deadline . . .

Moving Deng is critical, however.

PG 13/Cousins is probably best case

Emplay great article thank you.

I really don't think LBJ is leaving Cleveland and I am sure Durrant isn't leaving GS.

I think that Cousins is our best chance and we might be able to get him in a trade.

PG 13 is looking like more of a long shot providing OKC plays really well and that they are willing to spend $300m for he next season.

Now if Cleveland blows up LBJ may come into play but that is very doubtful.

I still like the cards we are holding but think they may have to get creative with some trades to upgrade the roster if there aren't 2 max FA that are superior players of the PG 13/Cousins quality.

Moving Deng is possible. Moving Deng without giving up a valuable player and getting no salary in return is a dream.

I think the price tag to move Deng next summer will be 2 future 1sts. IIRC it would be 2019/21. That's pretty prohibitive.

If they are moving Deng as part of a process resulting in signing a second max free agent, those picks will end up being pretty low. They will be lucky to find a team to take that deal.

They may end up having to add an additional piece like Hart, Nance, or Zubac (assuming they are not willing to attach one of the three untouchables—Ingram, Ball, or Kuzma).
