Yep.
The crazy thing would be if Deng became our starting PF next year. And he balls out hitting 45% from 3.

Draft players then trade them away when they're about to hit their prime for more draft picks then draft new players to develop again. Really nice rebuilding plan. It keeps us in this constant rebuilding mode. Lakers FO win rebuilders of the decade.

3. Stretch Deng, Do Not Renounce: JR ( renounce rest, cut Ennis )
$57 mill available

Deng 7.36
Zo 7.46
BI 5.76
Kuz 1.69
Hart 1.66
Zu 1.54
TB 1.38
JRHold 12.45
1stRd25 1.46
Inc3_850k 3.40 ( incomplete roster hold, 3 spots )
Total: 44.16
Cap: 101.00
Available: 56.84

I have done the math before but don't have it in front of me right now, but I believe the answer is YES.
The cap will go up by $7M if I remember correctly. The team could wait until next season to stretch Deng with would save another million plus. This should get close to the 35M max and certainly be enough for the 30M max. I think.

Thanks. That is one possible option.

Haha. Someone check Deng's passport for stamps!

The story I heard about Deng that really impressed me...
During games, he's in the training area doing a simulated game, with the TV onto the Lakers game. When the team is playing, he's running, doing slides, etc. When the team calls a timeout, he rests.

Professional.

You gotta know when to hold them. Know when to fold them.
Know when to walk away. Know when to run.

and the truth that we will never know is if players like Oladipo, Tobias Harris and now Elfrid would have had similar success in Orlando.

Sign PG. Let Randle walk. Consider bringing back these players (IT, Brook, KCP,). Save enough cap space for 1 max in 2019.

Lonzo/IT
PG/Hart
BI/
Kuzma/Deng
Brook/Bryant/Zu

The answer is, probably not.

In your scenario here is how our 2019 off-season salary looks:

Salary Cap: $108,000,000

7-10 Year Max Free Agent: $32,400,000
Paul George: $31,815,000
Lonzo Ball: $8,719,320
Luol Deng (Stretched): $7,362,000
Brandon Ingram: $7,265,485
2018 1st Round Pick (25th): $2,045,880
Kyle Kuzma: $1,974,600
Josh Hart: $1,934,160
Thomas Bryant Cap Hold: $1,803,638
Minimum Cap Hold: $888,927
Minimum Cap Hold: $888,927
Minimum Cap Hold: $888,927

Total: $97,986,864
Remainder: $10,013,136

That remainder is what Julius Randle's contract needs to fit into to have the necessary space. It's a bit of a stretch given his production but it's possible he might take a discount to stay with the team that drafted him or Pelinka could possibly structure the contract in such a way that year 2 would see a decline the same way Kupchak did with Jordan Clarkson.

I certainly see Dallas tendering Randle a bigger offer sheet than that though. There is also the issue of our own 2019 1st round pick that will come with a cap hold as well around the range of $2-$3 million pushing our space even tighter.

A good idea would be to not stretch Deng this upcoming off-season and either:

1. Negotiate a buyout this summer that would save around $3-$4 million in cap space after stretching the remaining salary due.
2. Hold onto Deng and stretch him in the 2019 off-season instead saving $1,362,000 in cap space.
3. Hold onto Deng and try to utilize our 2019 draft pick to trade him next season.

If we magically get PG13 but no other max FA, IMO, that's the end of the max FA dream. Any other max level FA would be obtained via trade (i.e. Klay/Kawai).

Yinoma did you read that article by Larry Coon. He seemed to think it is almost impossible to sign PG and LBJ and our FO knows it.
