I have to believe we traded up to use the picks in a trade getting rid of Deng. We didn't need the 2nd rounder we already had, adding another just screams trade to me.

The thing is we cannot trade the 25th pick together with next year's first round pick until the draft starts. So if it's gonna take two first rounders to dump Deng, then that trade cannot be made until after the 25th pick has been selected (which would be for another team).

So even though we haven't traded yet it's definitely possible that we will

If we just get Lebron and PG this year, do we have room to sign Kawhi as a FA next year?

Doubtful. We'd have to move deng and (if we resigned him) randle, and not have signed anyone else this summer past one year

You'd have to had moved Deng anyway to get LePaul here in the 1st place *edit: oh, you must've meant "not stretched", sorry for misunderstanding

Assuming a 108m cap, which is about 32m for Leonard's 30% tier. Let's assume James+George sign flat contracts (it'd be better descending in the 2nd year)

James + George 65m
Hart + Kuz 4m
Zo + BI 15.7m

Total 85m (rough number without cap holds & picks)... that's about 12m in space. You'd need to dump a Zo or BI or have Leonard take a discount. Sign & trades get tricky and third teams and all that junk but take that's where we start.

Or you wait it out in the trenches, trade deadline, Kawhi's grumpy and the Spurs are sub-500, and they're getting NO offers, then you send them BI/ZO & involve a 3rd team to get the salaries to match and make the deal. Doesn't seem practical to wait until Free Agency.

(or the Spurs trade him for peanuts to the Magic/Hawks in July & the Lakers take him back near the deadline. Magic/Hawks would take the assets the Spurs don't)

Also have to remember if we trade for Kawhi now his salary is only $20m, if we wait until next year to sign him his contract will be around $30m so it definitely makes it harder to sign him later provided we sign 2 max contracts this year.

Yup, i'm sure the spurs know this too & using it as leverage in their staring contest. Pop vs Magic, RC vs Rob, who ya got?

(P.S. it's not about who WINS the deal, it's about finding something that works for BOTH teams. it's immature & malpractice for the Spurs to accept a worser deal just to spite LA) Maybe the Lakers haven't presented a fair deal yet, so I digress.

Unless the Lakers get a top 10 pick, I doubt we'll be trading for Kawhi today. If the Clippers do get that 4th pick, he'll go there.

Ingram to Spurs
Deng and Hart to Memphis

Incoming Kawhi Chandler Parsons

Spurs incoming Ingram and 4th pick

Outgoing Kawhi

Memphis incoming Hart Deng and 25th pick

Outgoing 4th pick and Parsons

Would there still be a way to sign PG?

milwaukee looking for more picks to move 17.

As NBA draft day begins, a general prediction: Fireworks to come. Boston (No. 27) is still trying to move up into top 5, but will have a hard time so long as they continue keeping Brown or Tatum off the table. Clippers (Nos. 12/13) are itchy. Milwaukee (17) wants more picks.

Yes, but the Grizz are not taking salary and moving all the way to 25. They are looking to stay somewhere in the top 10 or so.

Time to build a Pelinka statue outside of Staples if he somehow trades 25th and 39th pick for the Bucks 1st round pick ...

The chance that the player will be better than the one we get at 25

You don’t see the significance in trading up in a NBA draft? Especially when the 1st round is so deep... ?

I mean, yes, I get that....pretty obvious but would you give up 3 picks and Zubac to move up? I would rather use a pick or two + Zubac to dump Deng's stupid contract.

I think that any attempt to move up in the draft would be for the purpose of dumping Deng. Perhaps #25 + future picks isn't enough to move Deng, but maybe getting a higher 1st round pick this year will make the difference.

how valuable would cap space be for the Spurs this summer? lets say if we offered a bunch of picks (all from this years draft after the draft when we select "their" players, next summers 1st and 2nd rounders, 2021 1st and 2nd rounders + maybe one off Zubac/Bryant if they care about them) with no salary going the Spurs way, could this 30M in cap space + 3 1st rounders and 4 2nd rounders, which they would have after the trade, be more valuable to them than whatever players we offer?
