PostPosted: Wed Oct 04, 2017 8:06 am    Post subject: OFFICIAL 2017-18 FREE AGENCY/TRADES THREAD

The 2017 free agency period is over for the Lakers and a new season is upon us! Players are vying for spots on the team, but the Lakers are basically done shopping. So, here is the new thread to discuss the upcoming season and FA.

Current Projected Salary Cap/Max Contract Tiers: $101m

7-9 years: $30.3 mil (i.e. PG13)
10+ years: $35.4 mil (i.e. LBJ)

Lakers Under Contract for 2018

Guards: Lonzo, JC, Hart, Ennis
Forwards: Ingram, Deng, Kuzma, Randle, Nance
Centers: Zubac, Bryant
Notable Free Agents: KCP, Lopez, Brewer

Needs:

1. Star power. Our current projected “stars” will be 20 and 21 in 2018. What we need are some bona fide stars who can help propel this team into the playoffs.

2. "Center." Our current 2018-19 depth chart is pretty underwhelming. The hope is that Brook Lopez takes a 1 year room exception deal, thereby preserving his Bird rights and allowing the Lakers to re-sign him in 2019 over the cap.

3. Backup guards. Depending on who we sign as FAs, and depending on whether JC is shed for cap space, we will be very thin at the backup PG and SG spots.

Possible FAs:

1. Stars: LBJ, PG13, CP3, Boogie

2. Non-star tier (non-RFAs, including possible ETOs): Melo, D.Jordan, Wade, B.Lopez, KCP, Monroe, Favors, Ariza, Bradley, Noel,

The Lakers have already traded away DLO/Moz as a first step towards 2 max spots in 2018. However, as of now, they only have 41m in actual cap space, assuming we do not retain the cap holds of guys like KCP/Brook. Some painful scenarios (H/T to Eric Pincus):

1. Trade away JC (for an expiring deal or cap space) or renounce/trade Jules: around 58m in cap space.

2. Trade away JC and renounce/trade Jules/stretch Deng: around 68m in cap space (enough to offer LBJ/PG13 full max deals).

3. Trade Deng (probably costs us 2 future 1sts) outright, and we have a shot at keeping one of JC/Jules.

There are several permeations possible, but seems these are the likely 3 scenarios. Magic has put a lot of chips in the 2018 pool of FAs. They have repeatedly talked about the 2 max plans for 2018, but if the stars decline LA, it will be very interesting to see what is the Plan B, C, and D. That being said, it’s upon the current Lakers core to prove to prospective FAs that the Lakers are back again.

It's a new season. Time to start a new thread and argue about fantasy pipe dreams...once again. Enjoy!

Man, it's going to be painful on lottery night when we watch either the Celtics or the 76ers get our pick. We've had 4 years of intrigue on lotto ball night. Yikes.

And now Denver looks like a playoff team, so their 2nd round pick will probably be around 45-50. I anticipate a much less popular draft thread this year

Yeah. And Draft Express is now a part of ESPN's paywall?

Another thing to watch out for is teams that could hit the re-set button by next summer looking to jettison top talent for cheap assets. The Cavs and Pelicans seem like obvious choices depending on the free agency decisions of Lebron and Boogie. Detroit seems likely to move Drummond at some point, while Memphis, Toronto, and Charlotte could also look to blow things up if they fail to reach or advance far in the playoffs.

Ugh, I know. It's literally the worst thing that's happened in the U.S. this year.

Yeah, plan B could be to absorb contracts. We could trade our 2019/21 after the 2018 draft? (Not that i recommend it).

Thanks Yinoma. I wanted to be on the first page of this thread. I predict this will be the biggest thread in LG history.

Oh man, you might be right.

Either lots of celebrating and joy or terrible weeping and gnashing of teeth. What a lot of pressure next summer.

If he doesn't it'll get to 20,000.

It will be good to ignore the draft again, though not for the reason I was hoping for.

Hmm. Do you think LBJ would come without another bona fide star (and Wade/Brook/KCP aren't it).

There are a few teams with good players on contracts that end in 2019. They could potentially dump those players with a pick and become players in 2018 free agency.

Yeah. Can't wait until we have our TEAM finally put together. Seems like so much instability/roster turnover year after year.

For the record, the 2017 Free Agency thread has reached 1815 pages as of today (2 games into the 2017-2018 preseason).

Considering we're targeting 2 max superstars... this thread will hit 2000+ pages easy
