Grinding Out a Win… The Lakers added Brook Lopez into the mix tonight … and some defense, too.

They held the Kings to 29 points in the first half, but the Lakers own offense was sluggish. With Lonzo still on the bench with the ankle injury, it resorted into iso after iso.

The Kings reeled the Lakers in during a stretch of nearly 7 minutes in the third when the Lakers went scoreless. In the last game, the Nuggets had as many points themselves at the end of the third quarter as both teams had tonight when the Lakers headed into the fourth with a 52-51 lead.

Behind Kuzma and Randle coming off the bench, the Lakers edged out the Kings down the stretch with the low-scoring 75-69 win.

“I’m way more proud of the way they got after it defensively tonight than the final outcome,” Luke said. The low-scoring numbers tonight will certainly impact the preseason defensive stats.

Nice to get a win.

Lopez -- -- Limited minutes as we eased him back into playing. He had 10 points on 4-6 shooting in this first stint as the Lakers built a lead behind some rare good defense early on. Then we sat him for the rest of the first half, using Randle and Zubac at the C spot. He showed that range, knocking down back-to-back threes from the wing early on. Solid D, as well. Really looking forward to seeing him play with Lonzo. Ennis was dragging things down a bit tonight. Once Lonzo is out there, the offense will have a bit more pop with how he spaces the floor or can work the post for points, if needed. He was strong enough defensively, but this wasn’t the greatest challenge even if the Kings has Randolph out there spacing the floor. He said the team had the right mindset today in practice heading into the game and knew they’d play well on D. He also said the back injury was a non-factor. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-9 shooting (2-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He hit a turnaround from the midpost. He missed a jumphook on iso. He got a soft bounce to fall on a jumphook from the same spot on his next touch. He attacked, spun and missed a tough 15-footer. He drained a wing three on the kickout from Ennis. He sank another from the same spot next time down. Second Half: He knocked down a tough running elbow jumper attacking across the lane to his right. He missed a wild attempt up against the shot clock and on the move. He missed a 10-foot jumphook in the middle of the lane.

Ingram -- -- So we’re up 4 and Ingram is 1-5 and we let him iso to go 1-6 with 22 seconds left. Horrible game. Again, he was forcing the issue on the drive instead of letting the game come to him. Last year, he’d have these 1 for X games again and again, but at least it was within the flow of the offense instead of the iso ball we see now…and he wasn’t leading the team in turnovers like tonight. He did have a few good moments on D, but also some major breakdowns. When he and Nance were getting their hands on passes or loose balls, that’s when the Lakers saw their rare opportunities on the break. He’s very aware that he’s not scoring well and that may be hurting the confidence. “I hope I can make some shots,” he said. Even just some good passes would help loosen things up. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 1-6 shooting (0-2 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He was called for an offensive foul on iso on the first possession. He swiped a deflected pass, pushed it out and scored a layup easily around the D. He knocked a pass loose on the next defensive stand. He didn’t seal his man in the post and allowed him to poke the entry pass loose. He airballed a turnaround in the post up against the shotclock. He gave up baseline and a layup. He missed a corner three. He curled into the lane and drew FTs, he made both. He was grabbed as he was about to finish on the break for FTs, he made one. Horrible outlet trying to hit Randle, turnover. Lost on D not picking up his man and we gave up a layup. Second Half: He forced his man into a brick on iso. He was blocked on a drive in transition. He missed a corner three. He attacked on iso and was tied up. He attacked and missed a pull-up 19-footer on iso with 22 seconds left.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Pretty quiet game on both ends, but he did have one of the passes of the night – a sweet bounce pass behind the D in transition to Randle for a dunk. That was a superb read. Surprising he actually played 25 minutes with how few notes I have on him. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-5 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists and 1 foul in 25 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: Great weakside cut off Nance’s post and Larry found him for the layup. Short on an open wing three. He missed a three on a kickout. He missed a pull-up 20-footer. Sweet bounce pass behind the D to Randle on the break for the dunk. Second Half: He drained a three on a catch and shoot behind a screen.

Nance -- -- Nance took Randle’s spot to help improve the defense. He was in on a number of pass deflections early on as the Lakers locked down on the Kings. Having him at the PF spot with a real C next to him helps him a lot. Much better game from him tonight. He got in on pass deflections and had some good rotations. The defense was stingy all night and perhaps the change with him in the starting lineup helped set the tone somewhat. (Randle and Kuzma had starter quality minutes tonight.) A couple scores from him. The first was getting out on the break and dunking the lob (more please) and then also hitting a face-up wing jumper in the half court. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block and no fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He deflected a pass and it led to an Ingram score on the break. Nice job containing middle on the screen roll to help us deflect another pass. He hit KCP cutting weakside for a layup. He smothered his man and forced a turnover, then finished the reverse lob dunk on the other end. He blocked Fox with Ennis on a drive. He swished a face-up 15-footer from the wing. Second Half: He attacked from the corner and his jumphook was blocked. He airballed a layup and wanted the foul.

Ennis -- -- Didn’t like this one from Ennis. The offense turned into an iso fest until is just bogged down completely in the third quarter. He wasn’t the one playing that way for the most part, but he didn’t have control over the offense. Not the floor general work we want. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-6 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He worked the screen-roll to hit Lopez for a three. He found him again for another three next time down. He lobbed to Larry on the break for the dunk. He was stripped as he tried to slip the D. He attacked the paint and was swatted. He missed a running three at the buzzer. Second Half: He missed an open wing three in transition. He attacked the pressure D and scored a layup. He attacked and scooped a layup over the backboard. He missed an open wing three.

Kuzma -- -- I loved the impact late in the game. It seemed cruised a bit in this game, picking his spots, then stepped it up during winning time. Good scoring on the move. He showed off some nice touch on a couple runners early on, but late in the game (1:40 left), a key possession, he iso’d on the block, attacked, right, spun around the smaller defender left and scored the layup. The smaller defender was helpless. Defensively, he was in on a number of excellent challenges forcing misses. He also hit the boards like we saw from him last time he was in Vegas. Very good two-way game working the PF spot tonight. This wasn’t a free-flowing game that plays to his strengths. It was a grind it out, slow-paced battle and he still found his spots. Didn’t lead the team in scoring in this one, but another strong outing. “If you have a motor like that, that drives you to compete, being a consistent basketball player is much easier,” Luke said. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-12 shooting (1-6 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 3 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He hit a 10-foot runner working the two-man game with Randle. He missed a 70-foot heave at the buzzer (take that one off his three shooting percentage). He was called for a travel attacking off the three line. He blocked his man on D to ignite a break. Nice challenge on the interior to force a brick. He pushed it out in transition and kicked out to Zubac for the jumper. He knocked down an And-1 runner trailing the break, he missed the FT. Second Half: He attacked, spun and missed the turnaround. He missed a wing three off a kickout. He dunked off the Caruso backcourt steal. He was stripped after taking the pass down the middle of the lane. He drained a wide open three off some rare good ball movement. He missed a wing three in transition. He iso’d with the clock low, attacked off a hesitation and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He posted up and kicked to Caruso for the three. He missed a three on a kickout. He hit Randle, who attacked baseline for a layup. With 5 seconds left on the shotclock and 1:40 left to play, he iso’d, spun around the defender on the switch and scored the layup. He missed a three with 1:15 left but we got it back. He was expecting a lob from Ingram, but got a bounce pass instead and fumbled it out of bounds. He set a screen, popped open on the inbounds, took the pass and dunked.

Randle -- -- Double-double from Julius. He didn’t get the start but had starter’s minutes and closed the game. He finished leading the team in both points, boards, and steals. Not sure the benching had anything to do with that (maybe with the matchups with some of the backup Cs), but strong game from him on both ends. Some good moments changing ends to get out for transition scores (or bad passes from Clarkson). He showed JC how to do it with a couple of lobs to him out of a timeout later in the second half. How about that block from behind on help D to prevent a sure layup in the second half? He’s been challenging at the rim so much better to start this season. Then, he also got in on some steals on the perimeter. Hope that keeps up. This was the two-way game we want to see with consistency. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 7-12 shooting (1-2 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 3 assists, 3 steals, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: Good job changing ends to take a pass and go around a defender for a layup. Wild runner in early offense but he got bailed out with a foul, he made one FT. He took the blocked shot and pushed it out coast to coast for the layup. He swished a three straight away without hesitation. He was called for a travel on a drive. He missed a wing three off the double drag screens. He was stripped out of a timeout. He stepped around his man to deflect the post feed, got out on the break and KCP hit him with a sweet bounce pass behind the D for the dunk. He blindsided the high post to pick the ball and take it for a dunk a few seconds later. Second Half: He missed a tough turnaround on iso. He attacked and couldn’t finish a layup. Wow, great recovery to reject a sure layup. He threw down the lob dunk off the Caruso screen-roll to start the third. He drew FTs working the deep post, he made one. He lobbed to JC out of a timeout for the dunk. Another lob to JC for the layup on the next possession. Nice challenge on a switch to prevent a three. Bad pass from Kuzma led to a worse pass from Randle, turnover. He posted up and missed a jumphook across the lane. He took a pass from Kuzma and attacked baseline for a layup.

Clarkson -- -- Hate this game from JC until about 7 minutes or so left. Then Randle found him for a couple of lobs, as he worked off ball (more please). That was the only thing really working for him, those off ball cuts for lobs from teammates. Prior to that, he ballstopped and pounded the dribble into traffic in the halfcourt. Some of his decision making in transition was just awful. He threw a wild pass to Randle that wasn’t close. He completely missed Kuzma filling a lane and instead forced a brick layup. Just a very selfish game and no recognition at all of ball movement or the need for it. He said he’s trying to figure out his role. Maybe the lobs will have him thinking a little more about the off-ball work. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-6 shooting (0-1 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He attacked and drew FTs, he made both. He iso dribbled himself out of bounds. Horrible decision on the break trying for a wild lob that wasn’t even close, turnover. He blew another break by not giving it up to Kuzma and forcing his own bricked layup. Second Half: He backdoored his man and took a lob for a layup. He iso’d at the end of the quarter, attacked and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a long three after ball stopping. Wild drive as soon as the ball came to him, brick. He threw down a lob from Randle, set up during a timeout. Another lob from Randle, this time, he was going away from the basket and turned to bank in the layup. He worked the two-man game and hit Kuzma for the open three.

Zubac -- -- Vegas wasn’t very kind to him earlier in the summer. Maybe he was having flashbacks tonight as he didn’t have much impact and struggled a bit to finish. His only score came on a kickout from Kuzma for a baseline jumper. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-5 shooting to go with 1 board, 1 block, 1 turnover and no fouls in 9 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He threw a pass away when he had a mismatch in the post. Wild layup attempt when he was caught under the hoop with time running out. He swatted WCS on iso on the other end. He couldn’t finish a layup on the screen-roll. He missed a jumphook dribbling under the hoop before going up. He splashed down a baseline jumper on a drive and dish in transition. He missed a baseline jumper. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Blue -- -- With the offense completely flatlined in the third quarter for nearly 7 straight scoreless minutes, Luke brought in Blue. Brief run and he missed his only attempt. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 1 foul in 6 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a catch-and-shoot three straight way.

Brewer -- -- He had some brief run in the first half and missed his only shot. He did push tempo and found Randle for a score on one of our breakaway. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 block and 2 fouls in 5 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He pushed out a board and hit Randle for a layup. He missed a corner three. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Hart -- -- He came in for Blue early in the fourth to cover VC. Some of the Lakers rookies were in diapers when Vince was a rookie. Hart didn’t shoot or force anything offensively. He was battling hard on D, and the team played well with him out there as he had the +8 in just 9 minutes. Give him a hockey assist on a nice feed to Kuzma as he curled into the lane on a play late in the game (Randle would score off it). The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot and had 1 board and 1 foul in 9 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nice challenge to force a miss. Another good challenge on his man across the lane to get a late stop.

Caruso -- -- “He was kind of sparking that group,” Luke said, mentioning Caruso was a calming force for the team. He clearly outplayed Ennis tonight. He’s had some very excellent moments defensively at the PG spot all preseason. He gets after it and stays in front of his man, navigating screens and recovering to challenge well. Glad we have him on that two-way contract – serviceable third string PG that we can stash in the G-League and bring up as needed. Tonight, he played more like a seconds-string PG. His only points came on a big three on a kickout in the second half. He set the table well all night, including a great lob to Julius on the two-man game out of a timeout. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-3 shooting from three to go with 5 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He airballed an open wing three on a kickout. Nice D on Fox’s drive to deny him. Good recovery again on Fox to challenge. Second Half: He missed a wing three on a kickout. He lobbed to Clarkson cutting baseline for a layup. He lobbed to Randle for the dunk off the two-man game to start the third. He swiped the ball in the backcourt and fed Kuzma for the dunk. He swished a three off the Kuzma kickout. Nice hustle on a loose ball to help the Lakers regain possession.

Walton -- -- Lakers up 16-6 when Caruso, Zubac and JC came in for KCP, Ennis and Lopez… Up 7 when Kuzma came in for Nance… Up 9 when Randle came in for Zubac, Brewer in for Ingram… Good job with pass deflections and rotations on D. The Lakers led 22-11 after the first quarter… Lakers getting out in transition behind some Randle speed and Kuzma D… Zubac in briefly for Randle… Randle, Nance, Ingram, KCP, Ennis lineup with 6 minutes to go, Lakers up 11… Offense dying (wish Lopez was in right now). Luke called a timeout. Turnover out of that timeout… Kings shot 28 percent as the Lakers led 41-29 at the half… Lakers came out flat again to start the third quarter. Ennis not making a positive impact running the offense… He sat Ennis for Caruso out of a timeout after 5 minutes. Lakers lead to 6… Up 3, he brought in Kuzma, Clarkson and Randle for Nance, Ingram and Lopez… Nearly 7 minutes of scoreless ball for the Lakers in the third… Blue in for KCP… Too much iso ball all game… The Lakers led 52-51 heading into the fourth… Blue out for Hart. Surprised it wasn’t JC, who had been awful… Lakers up 2 with 5 minutes left when Ingram came in for JC… Some good balling by Kuzma and Randle down the stretch...

Thanks DB. Spot on as always on each of the players and the defensive effort overall. Great to finally see a win this preseason!!

Here's hoping we get to see the entire starting lineup more often than not this season. Heal up Lonzo!

Thanks DB that was great. First thing I look at in the morning.

Love the game by Randle, Kuzma and Lopez and can't wait to see those 3 on the floor with Lonzo.

BI seems like he is all messed up.

KCP has been disappointing in general.

I simply don't get BI's game. He is untouchable to management? When he is on the floor he is running non stop with frenetic energy yet is never in position to do much of anything.

I simply can't figure out his game. What the coaches are trying to have him do. I am sorry but I just don't see much there. The offense was non existent and the defense the same. I have no idea what they have been doing in practice and in the summer but he looks totally lost out there and this was a number 2 pick?

I hope someone on the coaching staff can get this guy headed in the right direction. Right now you have basically a warm body on the floor that is accomplishing nothing. Look how easily Kuz's game is. No wasted energy or effort. BI is out working everyone on the floor yet is a non factor the entire game. Wow, something is really wrong.

Thanks, DB!

I hope BI stops forcing it... As for JC, nothing changed. He can bring the scoring, but I just get frustrated when the ball stops with him.

I usually don’t watch preseason games, except for a few minutes here and there. I watched about a quarter of this one. Neither of those squads looked like a bona fide NBA team, Good heavens. Maybe it was just an awful night for everyone. Based on the evidence of this game, Ball will need a ROY season to get this team into the high 30s.

I'm starting to agree with you on this one, but need a little observation against other teams.

Ennis shot 37.5% from 3 before coming to the Lakers last season, and 38.9% from 3 as a Laker last season.

He had a bad game yesterday for certain. He really wasn't that bad as a backup for us.

Although I did like Caruso's gutty defense.

Ennis is such a trash backup PG

His lack of 3 ball makes him a serious liability.

Ennis shot 37.5% from 3 before coming to the Lakers last season, and 38.9% from 3 as a Laker last season.

He had a bad game yesterday for certain. He really wasn't that bad as a backup for us.

Although I did like Caruso's gutty defense.

I'm starting to wonder if Walton is a good fit at coach. Seems like this team always under performs. I want him to be our coach but he has to figure out how to get the most out of his players. NOW!!

Interesting that JC and Randle were part of the bench. Both players are focused/more accomplished on offense while sadly lacking on defense - traits that are are more suited coming off the bench. Could this be something to explore more? With Kuzma playing with them, having a steady backup PG like Ennis would be appropriate.

Lopez and Nance provides much better defense in the front court with offense will flow much better with Lonzo at PG. BI and KCP will provide defense on the wings.

Lakers are now down to 18 players, with Caruso sure to go to the G League. If Bogut is healthy, it doesn't look good for Vaner Blue
