TBH, the fact that he's made it this long is kind of a miracle. He was a mess for about 20 years. He probably doesn't remember huge stretches of his life. And then he dealt with the loss of his son.

But yeah, he made it known last year that he was having trouble playing his guitar. And now with the hearing loss, it's really sad.

Listened to the entire Cream catalog the other day. What a band that was.

I had heard about this, unfortunately it is becoming more and more common among older musicians who have played in loud venues for many years.

Always been a huge Clapton fan, terrific guitarist and a total pro onstage.

Hopefully it won't get worse, that is especially brutal for a musician.

I'm surprised more musicians that play in large venues don't go deaf more often.

One of the very best EVER. But sadly, standing next to mammoth Marshall amplifiers every day will take its toll on you. Just ask Pete Townshend. I've seen guys like Paul Gilbert who use giant noise cancelling headphones during gigs simply as protection. It's definitely something you can manage tho, provided you use good in-ear protection.

THat said we all eventually will lose some hearing as we get older. Most mastering and mixing engineers today are dudes in their 50s or 60s that can't hear frequencies below a certain level. But they have the experience and intuition which enables them to still do their jobs. I imagine most musicians are like this too. Like I said it's definitely manageable provided you take the right precautionary measures.

That damn song...

Quote:
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?
I'll find my way through night and day
'Cause I know I just can't stay here in heaven
