In what sense do you believe that the deals are unique? Lots of teams have exclusive deals, such as the Yankees. |

yes, thats what I meant. Exclusive deals. That block out large sections of fans who aren't subscribed to a particular broadcaster.
How common are they?

Yankees are on YES network which I believe is on all major cable providers. Dodger games still aren't on DirecTV, correct? |

Yup. Just charter as it stands now for the next 20+ years.
So for the Yanks, is it common for anyone with cable tv to catch home & away games? |

I've often wondered? Does it make sense to ink a 20 deal with a team? If the team doesn't perform I think viewers would decrease. In that the case wouldn't the number of subscribers decrease too? _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

The deal is somewhat unique in that Spectrum is a media distributor who would normally pay subscriber fees to a media provider like Fox, who licensed broadcast rights from teams. Spectrum bypassed the middle man and bought the broadcast rights themselves and setup their own sports channel becoming both a distributor and a provider. _________________ "Suck it up. In Houston, it’s Root Sports for the Astros, Rockets, and Dynamo. It started off as something else, but it turned out to be quite a fiasco. Some cable providers still don’t carry it. The original company ended up in bankruptcy.
I think you need a market the size of LA or NYC to make something like that viable. It’s just going to get more complicated with cord cutters.
Edit: Root Sports is now AT&T SportsNet. |
