.500… The Lakers stretched the lead to 22 points in the third quarter as their three shooting came to life. They were flying up and down the court, getting into transition off of their defense and on their way to a blowout.

The Grizzlies, however, weren’t going down easy. They went with Gasol and Conley to start the fourth quarter. The game slowed down and the lead started to slip away.

And 18-point lead, became 14, then 10 and then before you knew it the lead was just 5 as Brook Lopez was called for a flagrant-1 trying to protect the rim. Memphis had a chance to tie-up on a single trip down the court.

Give KCP the game ball for the next couple of plays. He saved a hoop on a help D strip at the rim on one end, then drained the leaning 15-footer on the other.

“We were looking for an easy basket. They took our initial play away, so I called Brook for a ball screen and made a tough jumper,” KCP said of the key bucket. The Lakers would hold on and take the 107-102 win over Memphis.

After the first 10 games of the season, the Lakers are 5-5. That’s better than I anticipated. With all the new personnel, the shorter preseason, it felt like the Lakers would be behind other teams that have more collective experience together.

Where the Lakers are looking like a team is on that defensive end. They stressed it all preseason, forgoing a lot of time on the offensive execution and it’s paying off.

“We’ve been clicking on the defensive end,” KCP said. “We’ve been getting stops and we’ve been taking pride in it.”

They are playing as a collective unit on that end of the floor. Considering that they are playing all three of their first-rounders and starting two of them, that’s a great sign.

“Defense gives you a chance to win every night,” Luke said.

Ball -- -- The team was really clicking when Lonzo was pushing tempo and finding shooters in the third quarter. That’s his sweet spot. We’re deadly when we feed off the good D and are flying up and down court. You can’t do that, however, when you need to milk clock in the final minute. He was attacking instead of running clock in the final minute, fell, coughed it up and we fouled on the other end in the subsequent scramble. A sequence of events that put the balance of the game up for grabs. Got to learn how to close out games with the hoop IQ. Shouldn’t be a problem for him with experience. Offensively, he again struggled from the three line. The one he sank, the D went under the screen while he was going to his right. He squared up and drained it. All the others, he sprayed all over the place. Better passing tonight as he drew defenders and found teammates with consistency. His best score was in the first half as he flew through defenders with speed in transition and finished at the rim. A liked some of the two-man D tonight. We were able to recover nicely most of the night, finding a good balance with the bigs. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-13 shooting (1-8 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 9 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He missed a wing three on a kickout. He attacked and kicked to Lopez in the corner for the three. Nice advance pass to Lopez and it led to a Kuzma dunk. He missed a deep three behind a screen. He pushed out with speed, weaved through the D and powered in the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He attacked, was blocked on the floater, caught it and scored the putback. He drew the D on a probe and found Randle for the dunk. He attacked to his left and drew FTs on the runner, he made one. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He attacked and was swatted (looked like he had a trailer available). He swished a wing three, going to his right and hitting when they went under the screen. He missed a three in transition next time down. He kicked out to Kuzma for the three (worth noting he didn’t take Gasol off the dribble on the mismatch he had). He found KCP on the break for the three. He airmailed a lob pass out of the timeout, turnover. He got middle, drew the D and hit Randle for the dunk. He missed a three straight away. He missed the short bank in the post. He lobbed to Lopez for the dunk. He airballed a wide open wing three. He hit Lopez for the And-1 in the post. They went under the screen and he missed the three (should have used some more clock maybe). Bad play attacking instead of running clock, turnover.

Kuzma -- -- A quiet double-double from him. Felt like we didn’t integrate him in the offense very well in that second half, but he finds ways to make an impact. If the offense is clicking, the ball is moving and he’s able to cut off ball or make quick decisions with the ball, good things happen. We’ve got to keep that up and when things stall, I’d like to see some more set plays set up for him to help get the movement back in the offense. Love seeing him get back to that PF rebounding with the big numbers in the past couple. He puts that motor to good use. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-9 shooting (1-3 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 12 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and no fouls in 38 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: Short on a wing three. He reverse jammed off the behind-the-back feed in transition from Lopez. He cut down the middle and Lopez hit him for the score. Short on a jumphook on iso. He was fouled on a jumphook out of a timeout, he made both FTs. He pushed out the board, probed the paint and swished the floater over Gasol. He pushed out the break but couldn’t finish the layup. He had 8 points on 3-6 shooting. Second Half: He faced up, attacked right and scored a layup. He zipped a pass cross court to KCP who was fouled on the three. He drained a three on the kickout. Interior feed to Lopez for an And-1 layup. He missed a step-back, deep three trying to beat the shotclock.

Lopez -- -- He drained another four threes tonight, giving the Lakers that perimeter shooting we need. That makes it so much easier on guys like Ingram and Ball who want to get into the paint. After missing a few FTs, Brook came through with the two clutch ones with 5.5 left to ice the game. Tough break on that flagrant-1 that could have changed the course of the game. He was trying to prevent the layup with the shotblock and a player went down. It was a good effort, regardless. With Gasol playing more on the perimeter in this one, that really put a dent in Lopez’s rebound, just 1. That’s hard to do for a big. Still, he’s been playing some pretty good D lately, giving the Lakers two-way ball and allowing us to get out on the break, as well. In fact, he had the prettiest play of the night getting own floor quick to take and advance pass, then going behind his back to Kuzma for the dunk. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 7-14 shooting (4-6 from three, 3-6 from the line) to go with 1 board, 5 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He missed a one-hander after bumping off Gasol in the post. He swished a corner three on the kickout. He deflected a kickout to ignite a break. Good job running the floor, he took the outlet pass and went behind his back to Kuzma for he dunk. He hit Kuzma cutting down the middle next time out for the score. He was blocked from behind on a running jumper. He sank a three off the pick and pop with JC. He stepped out to take a pass and knocked down another three. Heat check three, really shouldn’t have taken that one as the kickout was way off the mark, he missed. He couldn’t finish the lob from Ball off the two-man sequence. He had 9 points on 3-7 shooting. Second Half: He threw a pass away and fouled. Short on a floater. He sank the wing three off the pick and pop with Ingram. He was fouled on the roll (good to see them change this up from the pick and pop), he made one FT. He traveled under the hoop. He missed a deep three. He threw down the lob from Ball. He took an interior feed, pumped and powered in the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He rejected a drive. He posted up and scored the And-1 layup, he missed the FT again. Flagrant trying to prevent a hoop. He was fouled with 5.5 seconds left (1-4 from the line), he made both clutch ones.

Ingram -- “Just trying to play angry,” Ingram said. Sensational second quarter with 14 points on his way to an 18-point first half on 7-9 shooting, just killing the Grizzlies on the drive again and again. The floor spacing helps when we’ve got Kuzma with Lopez or we’re playing BI at the PF. But, really, his footwork after he tucks the ball in arm after picking up his dribble is making a big difference. He can get those long steps, the hip turn and the stretch out on the finish to really use his length to his advantage. He was learning how to do that late last season. Now he’s putting it together with the handle and the confidence/attitude. In the second half, he didn’t see as much space to go to work and went 0-5. “There was so much standing and people were catching and holding that Memphis is a very good defensive team and they were able to load up the defense,” Luke said of why he slowed down a bit. Regardless, he was dominant in that first half. He was taking it right at Gasol and scoring over him or around him with ease. Love it. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-14 shooting He was a +6. The Action: He attacked the paint but couldn’t finish the tough bank. He blew past his man along the baseline and reverse jammed. He pushed out the rebound and took it into the chest of Gasol for the layup (had him backing up the whole time). He attacked the paint and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked to his left off the screen, stretched out and scored the lefty layup. He was stripped in the post by Conley. He battled on the offensive glass, got the board and scored the putback. He took the handoff, attacked, great footwork to get around Gasol and score the And-1 layup, he made the FT. Running start on Gasol again and he scored an easy layup, getting him on his heels. He attacked to his right after the catch and scored the And-1 layup again, he made the FT. Second Half: He attacked left and couldn’t finish a layup. He blocked a jumper. He hit Lopez on the pick and pop for the three. Sloppy kickout, turnover. He was tied up on a drive. He missed a wing pull-up. He hit Lopez rolling for FTs. He got a switch, took the post feed, attacked the small and drew FTs, he made both. He tried to flip in a layup from behind the basket and couldn’t finish. He missed a pull-up jumper against the clock. He stumbled and the pass went over his head, turnover. He couldn’t finish the lefty drive.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- After hitting a couple of big threes in the third quarter as the Lakers were throttling the Grizzlies, he went down in the paint in pain on the defensive end. He went to the locker room, but walked there and returned okay to play in the fourth. That kind of took a little wind out of the Lakers sails, though. But we were glad to have him back in the fourth as he came up with two of the biggest plays. In the two biggest possessions in the final seconds, he prevented a layup with a help D strip on the screen-roll on one end. Then he sank a tricky leaning 15-footer on the other to give the Lakers a 5-point lead. Very well could have been a different outcome without both of those. In the first half, he was actually a little shaky in this one with 2 of the Lakers 4 turnovers. But he put together a great second half to get the W. After the game, he said he’s feeling good. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-11 shooting (2-6 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 35 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He curled off the horns handoff and scored a layup over the help D to start the game. He was blocked on a layup in transition. Short on a wide open corner three. He missed a midrange pull-up. Wild pass in transition, turnover. He curled to his left and threw it away. Second Half: He missed a wing three coming to his right. He missed a wing three. He gambled and gave up a three. He was fouled on a corner three, he made all three FTs. He drained a sideline three on the break. Heat-check three in transition next time down and he swished. He hung in the air and tipped in a miss. He missed Kuzma in transition. He missed a wing three. Great steal to strip a man on help D on a drive in the final minute up 3. He then drained a leaning 15-footer to push the lead to 5.

Randle -- -- He had 10 points of his 12 points on 5-9 shooting in the first half. He was getting to the rim for scores with that power and speed game. More good defense in this one. In the first half, when he went up against Gasol, he didn’t give up a score on several attempts. In the second half, he had some very good stops against guards as they tried to test him. His physical condition has really helped his ability to recover. He’s just so fast and quick off the floor at times. How about that dunk rejection? He came out of nowhere to prevent that. Luke trusts him as the stopper in final possessions because of that mobility and improved defensive awareness. Some good chemistry with him and JC offensively. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 6-10 shooting (0-2 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He got the stop on Gasol in the post on iso D (three possessions they went to Gasol and came up empty). He dunked off the drive and dish from Lonzo. He faked a handoff and missed the short one on the drive. He scored the layup off the two-man with JC. He iso’d at the end of the quarter and hit the cutting Clarkson for the score. He attacked middle, spun back to his left and scored the And-1, layup, he missed the FT. Great recovery to reject a dunk attempt at one end, then he took a pass, spun and scored a layup trailing the break on the other. He pushed out the break and was picked from behind. He couldn’t power in a layup working the post. He took an interior bounce pass from JC and scored the easy layup. Second Half: He took the interior feed, pumped and reverse jammed. He posted up and hit Brewer cutting for the dunk. Illegal screen, turnover. He switched on a guard and drew the travel call for a turnover on D. Conley tried to drive on him and he stripped him. He couldn’t handle another Clarkson feed, this one went through both his hands, so we’ll put the blame here for this turnover. He was called for a turnover in transition, looked like he was past the defender. He airballed a 30-foot three on an inbounds against the shotclock.

Clarkson -- -- Strong first half with 9 points and 5 assists, so Luke gave him some extra run. Even had him running point a little when Ball came back in. In the fourth, he cut JC’s time short as the offense ground to a halt. I think he should have used Kuzma a little more in that stretch versus the Randle screens to give the offense a little more dynamic. That kind of slowed the Lakers down with the momentum they had built up. Prior to that, as mentioned, a really good first half where he had a combo of setting up teammates and getting into the money midrange where he’s looked automatic. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-10 shooting (1-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 5 assists, 2 steals, 4 turnovers and no fouls in 20 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He attacked right and missed a floater. Nice pocket pass to Randle on the two-man game for the layup. He scored when Randle found him cutting at the end of the quarter. Too hot on an interior feed, no chance for Randle to catch it. He missed a short pull-up. He sank a wing three on a catch and shoot. He probed baseline and no looked to Randle under the hoop for the layup. He attacked Gasol’s chest and powered in a layup. He hit Lopez on the pick and pop for the three. He sank an elbow jumper off the handoff from Brook. He missed a wing pull-up jumper. Second Half: Bad sagging D and he gave up a three. He missed a floater, we got it back to him, he iso’d on Wright and drew FTs on the drive, he made both. He sank an elbow pull-up off the weave to start the fourth. He iso’d and threw a kickout away. He drained a wing pull-up off the screen. He attacked, got caught in the air and threw the ball away, layup the other way.

Brewer -- -- More minutes at the PF again when we are resting both Kuzma and Ingram at the same time. He got his only score on a nice off-ball cut when Randle was posting up. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards and 1 foul in 13 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: No help on the lob D. He cut into the lane, took the feed from Randle on the low block and dunked. He missed a corner three.

Hart -- -- Not much to write about in this one. First time it looked like he had a little trouble defending some of the strong Grizzlies guards. Offensively, he missed a jumper and was blocked at the rim. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting to go with 2 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He missed a long wing jumper. He attacked baseline and was rejected easily.

Walton -- -- The Lakers trailed 15-11 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… Randle in for Lopez out of that. He had to matchup against Gasol and held his own… Tied up he brought in JC for Kuzma, sliding Ingram to the PF… Brewer and Hart in for Ingram and KCP. So Brewer at PF again… The Lakers led 27-24 after the first quarter… Randle, Kuzma, Brewer, Hart and JC to start the second… Randle out for Lopez with 8 minutes left, Lakers up 2. Great stint for Randle… The Lakers led by 5 with 6:55 left when the timeout came… The Lakers extend to a 9-point lead and forced a timeout. Luke going extra minutes for JC who was playing well… He sat Kuzma and kept JC in when he brought Ball back out of that timeout… Kuzma back in for JC still up 9… Defensive sub for the final seconds, but we didn’t play any defense and gave up a three… The Lakers led 62-58 at the half. They had 16 assists on 25-47 shooting (4-11 from three)… The perimeter shooting picked up and the Lakers stretched the lead out to 13 when the timeout came… A 12-0 run by the Lakers, raining more threes and they forced a timeout, up 82-60… Randle, Ingram, Brewer, JC, Ball lineup up 20 with 4:24… Up 22 when Ball sat for Hart… The Lakers led 88-70 heading into the fourth… Grizzlies going with Gasol/Conley to start the fourth… Lakers with Randle, Kuzma, Brewer, Hart and JC… He brought back in KCP for Hart with 9 minutes left… Up 14, he called a timeout. Lakers lost their pace and that helped play into the bigger Grizzlies lineup… All starters back in… Up 10 with 2:44, he called a timeout to set something up. The play busted but we got an And-1 from Lopez in the post anyway… The lead was trimmed to 3 and Memphis called a timeout. KCP with a steal and then a score… We got FTs from Lopez, then brought Randle in for D and held the line for the final possession…

Very happy the Lakers won. If we were able to play more consistently in a few of our previous games where we were up a good amount, we would be more like 7-3.

I kept saying these last seasons to the tank-team that they are shooting themselves in the foot with rooting for losses. Winning is a habit, a skill that needs to be learned and nurtured.

We are seeing now how our team has to learn anew how to win close games, how to not give up big leads etc. Young team as they are, the learning will last some time.
The change from offense-first to the defense first team is really promising. A real good change of the culture.

Thanks, DB!

Team is learning quickly what works and what doesn't

Defending leads will be hard until they develop some half court sets that incorporates Lopez into the offense.

When there was about 4-5 minutes left to play, it seemed like they had no energy and/or coasting

Excited to see how they fare against the Celtics and Wizards on their road trip

Two more things.

JC and Randle are developing some very nice chemistry.

Western C has at the moment 11 teams at 0.5 win percentage or better. Tough place to be.

Thanks

JC over dribbling in 2nd half.

Thought they needed Randle's defense late in game

Though Lonzo should have come in earlier in the 4th

Thanks, DB!

The ends justified the means. Sometimes you have to take risks to get what you want.

Half-court offense really bogged down in the 4th. We really need Zo to learn how to close out games better. Part of the learning process, but it will come.

The Lakers leaned heavily on the vets - Brook and KCP. Brook's been a revelation. I expected the steadiness, but he's also been ultra-aggressive, recognizing that he's the focal point of the late game offense. KCP was huge on the strip and score sequence.

Looks like all that work on D in training camp paid off this year.

Props to Jules for taking pride in getting stops!

Ball has been playing great D as a rookie as well. We look this good even with Ball's shot not falling. It will come and when it does we will be a very dangerous team.

Hard to grab boards when far away from the basket MAKING 3's on offense, and rebound hungry guards like zo grabbing em on Defense.

Hard to grab boards when far away from the basket MAKING 3's on offense, and rebound hungry guards like zo grabbing em on Defense.

You can’t rebound a made 3. Just joking around, but Lopez is a minus rebounder.

It's been a while. I never post anymore, but just wanted to stop in and say I still religiously read your game recaps. So, thank again, for all that you do.

Also, I love watching this young team play. The defensive improvement, more aggressive play and attitude, and the fact that so many of our young guys are contributing... I haven't missed a game yet. The future is bright.

Go Lakers!
