Lavar knows any press bad or good gets him in the news. So of course he would make a statement like this knowing Trump would bite. Before Lonzo went to UCLA last year and being a projected top draft pick did anybody know who he was? Most likely not.

It wasn’t the White House, it wasn’t the State Department, it wasn’t father LaVar’s so-called people on the ground in China that got his son out of a long term prison sentence - IT WAS ME. Too bad! LaVar is just a poor man’s version of Don King, but without the hair. Just think.....LaVar, you could have spent the next 5 to 10 years during Thanksgiving with your son in China, but no NBA contract to support you. But remember LaVar, shoplifting is NOT a little thing. It’s a really big deal, especially in China. Ungrateful fool!

I don't think people realize Lavar is playing them and what a genius move is on his behalf.
1) He gets free publicity from a bad situation. CNN, ESPN, etc are putting him on their shows and he gets to self promote. You see his troll face when the interviewers are asking him serious questions.
2) The heat was on his sons, Lonzo and LiAngelo....this puts it back on Lavar where he can take it. He is doing nothing but PR and he can take the heat.
3) The people critical of Lavar weren't BBB customers anyways.
4) He takes control of the situation. Nobody can tell him what to do and who to thank.
I think this is a good comeback for BBB brand after shoplifting controversy. No one was gonna side with LiAngelo who's seen as a rich spoilt kid who tried to steal and it had changed the narrative of a middle class family that reached this far the right way.
