Self-Inflicted Wounds… The Lakers had 10 turnovers in the first quarter and trailed 33-16 after the first. Anything that could go wrong, seemingly did.

“They were ready for the fight and we weren’t,” Luke said.

The Lakers version of their own hopeful Death Lineup – Randle, Kuzma, Ingram, KCP and Ball – helped cut a once 21-point lead down to 6 behind Julius Randle’s energy in the first half. The team fed off him, picked it up and battled their way back into.

In the third quarter, an 11-2 Laker run had them trailing by just 2. One thing about this team, they don’t give up.

Still in the thick of the fight, they were down 6 midway through the fourth when Luke sat Randle for Lopez. This was the game. Lopez sputtered on both ends and that’s all the Celtics needed to cement this one away. The Lakers fell 107-96.

Some awful officiating along with the Lakers 20 turnovers (so many self-inflicted mistakes) and many missed layups made it a bit choppy at times. Still, they were competitive and that seems to be their m.o. every night. I’m sure most Laker fans would be happy to see less Bogut and Brewer and more of the above lineup. Luke's rotations were a bit painful tonight.

Ball -- -- Man, finish your layups. Some of these were point-blank easy ones. It’s one thing to go 1-5 from threes, but it felt like he was about the same or worse on layups. Still, I liked the fight in him. This team never went away and we played better with him on the court. He led the team in blocks tonight with 4 and assists with 6. His challenging of shots tonight was superb for a guard, let alone a rookie one. Again, not great stats, but clean up those layups, keep the team fighting like this and moving the ball and we’re good. The three shooting will come at some point (hopefully, this season!). Celtics fans were booing him early on. His dad’s rep proceeding him here. They quieted down later. Some of his passes were excellent. He had a great feed to Lopez on the screen-roll, an advance pass he fired from his chest down court to Kuz for a dunk. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-15 shooting (1-5 from three) to go with 5 boards, 6 assists, 1 steal, 4 blocks, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 39 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He missed a deep three trying to beat the shotclock. Wild pass in the lane, turnover. He missed a turnaround in the post. He attacked, left his feet early and threw a pass away. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He got tapped on a wing three in early offense. He pushed up an inbounds with speed and hit the short one-hander. He showed the ball on a finish and was blocked at the rim. He missed a corner three. He had 5 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Second Half: He blocked Smart, grabbed the ball, took a couple dribbles and rifled an advance pass up court to Kuzma for the dunk. He probed off the screen, attacked and reversed. He fired a pass to a rolling Lopez for the dunk. He hit Clarkson for the three. He missed a point-blank layup on a drive, got to finish those. He missed a floater. Not close on a sideline three. Poor BLOB inbounds pass and it was picked off (not sure what we were even running there). Wow, over Lonzo’s back on the defensive board and no call, Celtics ball. He attacked off the high screen and scored the lefty layup. He choked an easy righty layup. Good hustle to block a Kyrie layup in transition on the other end. Another missed layup finish on the break that he should have had, Ingram cleaned it up. He attacked into crowd, wild miss. Good challenge to force a brick.

Kuzma -- -- You know things were going sideways early on when those shots Kuzma nearly always hits just weren’t falling. “I’m a rookie. It’s going to happen,” he said afterward. Love that we think he’s automatic on some of those shots in the paint. When he misses (a floater or a layup, which both happened early on) it’s a shocker. He picked it up a little later and showed what we’ve become accustomed to. No threes in this one, unfortunately. I thought his first look at three was a poor one and wondered if he’d be conservative from there tonight after that. Luke played him for a couple stretches at C. I would have liked to have seen us go other way at times with bigger units out there with him at the SF as we had some issues with size tonight. Good experience for him to get the start in the hostile environment. Hopefully, he leanred from it. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-10 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 3 turnovers and 5 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: Short on a wing three. He blocked a shot on iso. His reverse was blocked. He missed a floater. He fouled a three shooter. He choked an easy layup. Called for a charge in transition, looked knocked into prior to that). He attacked off the three line with a couple long strides and scored a layup. He attacked off the three line with speed and easily scored a layup. Second Half: Great job changing ends off the Lonzo block and Lonzo fired a pass to him for the dunk. He got walked under the rim and gave up a missed FT. He missed a floater in the lane. Wow, robbed on an And-1 layup as the defender slid under him. His pass was picked off. He up-faked at the three line, moved in a dribble and hit the 17-footer. He missed a wing three. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs, he made both.

Lopez -- -- He’s been strong lately. Tonight was not one of those outings. That’s unfortunate because we’re a young team and we need to lean on our vets in tough road arenas. It felt like the three’s he was taking were rushed and the ones he didn’t take were his best looks of the night. Just out of sync. We gave up 25 second chance points tonight. He wasn’t playing big when he was out there. It felt like the game was over when Luke brought him back in for the close. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-11 shooting (0-4 from three) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He powered in a layup off the two-man game with KCP for the Lakers first score. He missed a wing three. He missed a three on a Lonzo kickout. He was blocked from behind, got it back and hit the short one. He missed a step-back in the post. He threw a pass away, getting off balance on the long outlet. Second Half: He threw a pass out of bounds (should have shot that three which was his best look of the night. He missed a three. He changed ends quickly and Ingram outlet to him for the score. He rejected a drive and it led to a breakaway score. He rolled and Lonzo whipped a pass to him for a dunk. Nice challenge on Kyrie’s drive. He took his man off the dribble and hit the jumphook to his right. He missed a three.

Ingram -- -- It’s early in the season and he’s starting to string together some really good games. He got to the rim for some scores, but also knocked down some jumpers tonight. A good mix in that regard. I’m looking at these small ball lineups with Ingram/Kuzma/Randle and Ball and like the future of that group. They don’t shoot well from the perimeter yet, but they will. They do play some very mobile defense that makes things happen. And they get up and down the floor with speed. All of them can create for others or themselves. I want to see those guys on the floor together a lot more. They got good run tonight. Defensively, he had some nice challenges. But look at those four and right now you are generally always getting some excellent shot contests with their combination of length, mobility and effort. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-11 shooting (0-1 from three, 4-7 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He attacked right and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked left, spun, lost his man and scored the easy layup. He banked in a pull-up at the FT line, wasn’t planned. He couldn’t finish a drive. He threw a pass away, turnover. He couldn’t finish under the hoop. He probed baseline to his left and hit the pull-up jumper. He drew FTs on the defensive glass, he made one. Great one-handed catch of a lob over his shoulder and he turned it into a layup all in one motion. He had 11 points on 4-6 shooting. Second Half: He was fouled on a pull-up jumper at the elbow, he made one FT. He up-faked at the three line, stepped in to draw the contact and hit the long leaning And-1 jumper, he missed the FT. He skied for a rebound then fired it down court to Lopez for a score. Quick attack in transition, through contact and he scored the layup. He swiped a kickout. He missed an open wing three. He attacked right and missed a tough one, unable to get close to the rim. He threw down a putback jam off Lonzo’s missed layup.

Caldwell-Pope -- Some poor shot selection at times (a turnaround brick on iso was probably his worst). He did knock down a couple of threes, including a 4-point play on one of them. Despite the poor shot selection, his energy and hustle always seems to be pretty consistent and the team needed that tonight. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-10 shooting (2-6 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He set up Lopez for a layup to start the game. He airballed an open corner three in transition. He curled into the paint off the handoff and drew FTs, he made one. He had a ball stolen in the back court for a dunk. He hit a pull-up, And-1 three in transition, he made the FT for the 4-point play. He swished a corner three. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He banked in a pull-up jumper in the paint. He hit a jumper from the top of the key. He missed a pull-up elbow jumper in transition (should have attacked). He recovered on his man to reject him off the glass. He missed a pull-up three in transition. Horrible turnaround brick on iso. He drew a charge on Kyrie. He missed a chuck from three.

Randle -- -- He looked like the only guy showing up ready to play in the first half. That seemed to spark the team to life. He was the only guy in the positive on the +/- in this one. I really don’t understand why we sat him in the fourth down the stretch. I thought that was the ball game. Not bringing him in earlier in the first quarter was also a mistake. Only 21 minutes when he’s the one guy that is making an impact? Great job by Randle hitting shots in the paint, grabbing boards and challenging shots. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 5-9 shooting (6-6 from the line) to go with 12 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He missed a jumphook in the middle of the paint. He found Ball open for a three. He crashed the glass for a board then scored the putback. He attacked the paint with speed, spun and drew FTs, he made both. He overpowered his man in the post and hit the jumphook. He just ripped the ball from his man on the perimeter, pushed it out and threw down a massive dunk. He knocked a man over on an attack and drew FTs, he made both. He lobbed over the D to Ingram cutting for a score. He had 10 points on 4-5 shooting and 7 boards. Second Half: Called for a travel as he pivoted in the paint. Looked fouled on a layup, no call and he missed. He scooped up a loose ball and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He couldn’t finish the righty layup on the break. He took a pass in the paint, pivoted and hit the And-1 jumphook, he made the FT. Nice challenge in transition to prevent a layup.

Clarkson -- -- He needed maybe a little more poise in this one on the road. Some turnovers or difficult shot attempts that he’s been avoiding lately. I thought his three ball looked good. His two misses from three were forced or heatchecks. His makes, good looks. If you are thinking about whether one of Randle or Clarkson can stay on the team next year, Randle’s two way effort and his continual improvement should have you leaning in that direction. There’s definitely value in JC’s ability to score off the bench or create something out of nothing. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-13 shooting (2-4 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He missed a tech FT. He missed a pull-up chuck shortly later. He took a pass from Bogus in the paint, nearly traveled, but hit the short one off the pivot. He iso’d and coughed up the ball. He forced a drive and airballed the finish. He pushed out and was called for a foul on a drive. He hit a pull-up 17-footer. He swished a wing three. Second Half: He swished a wing three on the catch and shoot. He spotted an open lane, an explosive first step got him around his man and he scored the layup over the help. Not a good look on an iso three and he missed. Busted offensive sequence and Clarkson turned nothing into a short bank which he knocked down. He was fouled on a wing three to start the fourth, he made two FTs but got back his miss. He got middle, missed a floater, it came back to him and he scored the putback. He was blocked on a reverse. He missed a wing three. Forced it on the break and had the ball stolen.

Brewer -- -- One of the big letdowns of the game was the bricked three in the corner in early offense from him. Pretty sure those are the types of shots Luke doesn’t want and it came from a vet. He has some wild moments out there that make you scratch your head. A lot of those from our vets/coaches in this one, in my opinion. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-5 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 11 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: Off-ball foul on offense, turnover. He pushed out with speed and scored an And-1 layup between defenders, he made the FT. He took contact and missed a layup, got it back and then choked the point-blank layup. He drew a charge on help D on the other end. Second Half: A little lost under the hoop when he took a pass, he tried to flip it in over his head and missed. Not close on a wide open corner three.

Bogut -- -- Not sure why we didn’t bring in Randle in the first quarter. You got to get him more minutes. Bogut’s minutes were awful. He was a -10 in 6 minutes with 2 turnovers. Just out of sync offensively with the rest of the team. Luke said they needed some toughness and wanted more passing. “I thought he did a good job,” Luke said. He thought the turnovers were due to the young guys not understanding how to deal with the overplays. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot, had 3 boards, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 6 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: First touch, he threw a pass out of bounds. Offensive foul on a putback, FTs the other way. Horrible read and he threw a bounce pass out of bounds. He rejected a layup on the other end. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Hart -- -- Really poor game from him. Looked like a rookie tonight as he was a negative factor in his second half run with the turnovers and misses. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting, had 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 12 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He missed a sideline three in transition. Sloppy perimeter handoff and it went out of bounds, ugh. He charged in transition shortly later, another turnover.

Walton -- -- Celtics knocking perimeter shots down to start, Lakers unable to hit theirs. Lakers trailed 14-9 when the timeout came… Turnovers killing the Lakers… Down 7, he went to Bogut and Brewer for Lopez and Kuzma. No Randle… Down 11 when JC came in for Lonzo… Lakers turning the ball over like crazy… Hart in as the Lakers trailed by 10… The Lakers trailed 33-16 after an awful first quarter… No Randle in that first quarter was a mistake… He started the Randle, Kuzma, Brewer, JC, Ball lineup… Lakers down 14 midway through the quarter… Randle, Kuzma, Ingram, KCP, Ball lineup finally… They cut it to 11... Then 8… Then 6… They trailed 61-52 at the half. That unit got them back in it… Luke had enough of the poor officiating and drew a tech 4 minutes in. Can’t blame him. They were awful… JC in for Kuzma, Lakers down 10… They trimmed it down to 2 on an 11-2 run… Down 3, Randle came in with 4 minutes left… He sat Ingram for Hart. Who is the PF now? KCP, Lonzo, Hart and JC out there with Randle. Crazy... The Lakers trailed 87-81 heading into the fourth… He started a Randle, Kuzma, Brewer, Hart, JC lineup… Too many self-inflicted wounds by this lineup… Down 6 still, he brought in Ingram for Hart… Down 6, Lonzo in for Brewer… KCP in for JC… Randle out for Lopez down 6 with 6 to go, ugh. Why?… Down 9 and he went to Kuzma at center with 3 minutes left…

Thanks DB!

Outside of the no compete start and Luke’s baffling rotations; I can live with tonight’s game. Slowly inching back to respectability...I’m seeing some respect on opponent’s faces whether it be Wall, Conley or Irving. Coaches too.

Good analysis DB

Luke is really frustrating to me. I've said it before, for a young coach he is rigid.

It's almost like he isn't paying attention to what's happening and instead defaults to a form of auto subbing -"ok, 6 minutes gone by, time for my auto lineup change"...ok, saying he's not paying attention is probably too harsh but putting in Bro and removing Randle was just a huge head scratcher for me.

In any event this was one of those it felt like we just let get away from us with poor play down the stretch

As Pops stated a couple nights ago, there will always be mistakes - the issue is to learn from them

Tonight, the Lakers should embrace Pop's words

Was it just me or did it seem like any questionable or borderlines fouls were ALWAYS called on the Lakers and NEVER called on the Celtics and it just killed our comeback attempts...?

It's been that way even when we were relevant.

I dont understand what Luke is doing out there. Once he brough Lopez back in the 4th that was basically game. Prior to Lopez coming in for Randle, Julius was out there with Brewer,Hart,. Lakers couldn't score. Why is Luke not putting our most productive lineup out there?

Watched on my muted phone and things I noticed:

Lonzo adds way too much English on layups. His offense is horrible to watch.
Clarkson still doing Clarkson things
Kcp killed us on some of those last minute pull up jumpers in transition
Refs on the home cooking diet
Luke finds something that works in the last games and decides to sabotage it with bogut.

Randle looked like the only player not afraid. He looked pissed on the bench during the first.

I hated the way the team started the game, but I loved how we fought back and made it a game the rest of the way. Something to remember for the future.

Defensive rebounding, turn overs, and blowing lay-ups (Brewer, Ball, Kuz). I'm not that impressed by the Celtics; we should have won this one.

Their center (never heard of him) got a career high. Brook, he's your assignment. Block him out, please.

Could someone please explain what is Bogut doing in there playing ahead of Zubac? Bogut should never see any game time again. Ever. As a Laker at least.

The future looks bright, though. We are starting two rooks and a sophomore and complain about not beating No 1 of the East. Good old days are back.

"we weren't ready" should be a suicide comment after a Foston game.

100% on luke for saying that and not communicating what it means when the Green rolls through. He's the only one who'd understand right now.. lol.

DB thanks great writeup.

I also would like to see Randle, BI, Kuz and Ball + a shooter KCP, JC or Lopez.

Everyone from fans to the announcers were shaking their heads in the first quarter wondering why Randle was on the bench the whole time. The camera even zoomed in on him to show his reaction. I realize Luke is a young and still learning coach but this one was just impossible to understand. Bogut was awful as was Brewer.

Loved that Randle did not let this get him down. He actually seemed to take his anger at not playing out on the Seltics.

Let's hope Luke's learning curve isn't too long. This was a loss that was all on him.

Thanks DB. The first contest this season I've seen in entirety. Not so bad overall. Now, if those early game types of screw-ups can be whittled-down, this team could be very fun to watch.

Thanks DB!!!

Zo's chase down block on Kyrie was the kind of fight that's becoming this team's identity. Subpar game from Kuz and if Lopez isn't hitting 3's, we're going to struggle. We just weren't ready for Boston's intensity, which is alarming and I can't help but look at Luke a little for that. I mean, it's Boston. They were booing Zo every time he touched the ball. That's what these kids need to learn. Now that we got a little something cooking, teams and their arenas are going to be upping the intensity. It's why Zo needs to stay aggressive offensively and God willing, some shots start to drop. He just doesn't seem confident with his right hand trying to finish in the paint.
