No Three and No D… The Lakers can get through some poor shooting nights with good D. But when the D goes south while you shoot just 13% from three? Forget it.

The Lakers gave up 69 points at the half. That steady team defense we’ve seen recently was simply nonexistent.

“Good teams will find a rhythm if they are scoring that easily,” Luke said.

The Wizards piled up the points off turnovers throughout the game, scoring 27 points off the Lakers 19 turnovers.

The Randle-led bench would once again trim down the opponent lead. They cut a 21-point lead down to 9 with 8 minutes left to go, but the Wizards would return their starters and restore order.

The Lakers dropped their second game of the road trip, 111-95 to the Wizards. These are quality opponents, but the Lakers didn’t look terribly competitive at times tonight.

Ball -- -- Nearly a triple-double, but it wasn’t pretty, at all. He couldn’t hit from three again (1-7) nor from the line (3-7). He also compounded that poor shooting with 4 turnovers. His spraying missed threes all over. Left, right, long, short. On the plus side, he did have some excellent finds off the two-man game and also had those full-court passes going. The best of those was an immediate outlet off a defensive board to a streaking KCP for the breakaway. Again, I like the fight in him. Even if we give up a score, he’s quickly down court attacking. We’re better with him on the floor even if parts of his game aren’t working. He says the shooting is mental, but he seems very confident. “He’s got a lot more pressure on him than I think anyone has in a long time that’s come out from college,” Luke said. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-12 shooting (1-7 from three, 3-7 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 8 assists, 2 steals, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 29 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: Quick first step to blow by his man and he scored a lefty layup. He missed a pull-up midrange jumper. He deflected a pass to help get a stop. Nice job drawing the D on the rescreen and hitting Lopez rolling for the And-1. He tipped in a miss. He grabbed a rebound and fired the outlet to KCP for the layup. He was called for using an off-arm to erase a hoop. Quick return pass to Kuz who instantly cut off the handoff for a score. He couldn’t finish a tip in, then threw it away shortly later. He missed a wing three. He missed a corner three. Turnover on a long pass ahead. He muscled himself to the front of the rim and missed an And-1, he missed both FTs. He swiped a pass and quickly hit KCP for the breakaway score. He lobbed to Lopez for the dunk. He missed a three straight away. He had 4 points, 5 boards and 6 assists in the half. Second Half: He drained a three to start the second half. He setup Lopez for FTs with the pocket pass. He hit Ingram trailing the break for the huge dunk. Way short on a corner three. He had a dribble poked away. He drew FTs in the paint and made one. Quick attack to his right but he couldn’t finish the layup high off the glass. He was fouled on a three, he made two FTs. Wide left on an open three straight away. He clanked another wing three.

Lopez -- -- Because the Lakers are such a young team, it’s especially important for our vets to provide that game-to-game consistency. Lopez hasn’t been doing that. Some games he’s great. These last couple on the road have been forgettable. Defensively, just not making an impact for stretches. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 4-12 shooting (0-2 from three, 7-7 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls. He was a -8. The Action: He missed a good look at a three. He missed a floater. He rolled off the rescreen, took the pass and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. Off target on a floater. He scored a layup off the interior feed by KCP. He drew FTs on a drive, he made both. He tried to dunk a lob he should have just grabbed or softly finished and he missed. Poor move on iso and he wasn’t close next time down. He missed a short putback after grabbing a board. He threw down a dunk on the lob from Lonzo. He drew FTs trying to create off the dribble, he made both. He smothered a drive to get a stop. He cleaned up a missed Ingram drive. He had 13 points on 4-10 shooting. Second Half: He missed a wing three off a sloppy kickout. He drew FTs on the roll, he made both. He missed a short one.

Ingram -- -- There were long stretches in this one where you hardly noticed him, which hasn’t been the case lately. He had a couple throwdowns and drew some FTs, but a quiet night. His perimeter shot was not falling. And with everyone else clanking from the outside that only tightens up the paint more. His two throwdowns were in transition, so no worries about floor spacing in those situations. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-8 shooting (0-1 from three, 4-6 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -20. The Action: He crossed over and missed the FT jumper. He drew FTs on a drive and made one. He threw down a lob over a man on the break. He ball faked on the break and scored a layup. Quick attack from the wing and he drew FTs, he made both. He was rejected badly on the break. He attacked and missed a layup, but Lopez cleaned it up. Second Half: He threw down a huge dunk trailing the break. He missed an open wing three. He iso’d and missed the easy And-1 layup attempt, he made one. He missed a pull-up 17-footer. He iso’d and was stripped.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He was also spraying that three ball around, going 0-4. It’s hard for me to tell what a good shot is for him. He seems to hit the tough, twisting ones and misses the easier ones at times. Well, nothing from three was going down. He made 5-6 from elsewhere on the floor. Defensively, he’s always battling and mixing things up. He had 3 steals tonight as well as drawing a charge with that constant defensive motor. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-10 shooting (0-4 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 3 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 34 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He sank a pull-up wing jumper curling off the screen to take the pass. He took the advance pass, changed directions and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He missed a three curling to his right. Great extra pass after a strong cut and it led to a Lopez layup. He leaked out and Lonzo outlet the board to him for the uncontested score. He lobbed to Ingram on the break. He scored a layup on the break. Second Half: Brain cramp on a jumpball for a backcourt violation. He missed a wing jumper. He sank a long wing jumper. He crashed the glass and reset the offense. He drew a charge in the post on D. He airballed a baseline runner. He set up Julius for an And-1, threading a pass between defenders. He stripped a man. He bricked a three. He was fouled on a three in transition, he made two FTs. He missed a three straight away.

Kuzma -- -- Tough game for him in multiple areas offensively. His game was a microcosm of the Lakers overall game tonight. The shots were dropping as he was a poor 4-14, including missing both threes. Our starters went 1-16 from three. That’s ugly. Turnover prone effort from Kyle, as well, with travels and illegal screens for 5 turnovers. So how he went, the team went. Good job on the offensive boards trying to make something happen when the other stuff wasn’t. The hustle got him one board shy of a double-double despite the tough shooting night. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-14 shooting (0-2 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 9 boards (5 offensive), 1 assist, 5 turnovers and 3 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He grabbed an offensive board and hit the jumphook. He missed a baseline jumper. He missed an open wing three. He spun and missed a short jumper. He hit a cutting KCP, who made the extra pass to Lopez for the layup. Nice roll after handing the ball off to Lonzo and Zo found him for the layup. Sloppy perimeter screen, turnover. He swished a pull-up wing jumper. He attacked and missed a baseline leaner. He posted up and hit JC for the three. He spun and missed a one-hander after pulling down a board. Another illegal screen, turnover. He missed a short one in the paint. He was called for a travel unsure on what he was going to do on iso. Second Half: He missed a tip, but got it back and reset the offense, then was hit under the hoop, he made both FTs. He was called for a travel on the spin move. He was blocked on the breakaway. He missed a jumphook. He missed an open wing three. He couldn’t finish an And-1 layup on the break, he made both FTs. He drew FTs on the offensive glass, he made one. He scored a layup on a lob.

Randle -- -- It kind of drives me nuts just about every game now when I see opportunities for the team to get Randle minutes but we don’t because we aren’t playing him at the PF. Or like last night, playing Bogut at backup C for stretches. He’s bringing impact effort and energy. Just balling and getting teams on their heels at times. Yet, you look down and see 23 minutes for Randle while we go small at PF for stretches (sometimes with Brewer!). The motor was running high, as usual, for Randle tonight. Seemed like he had a lot in his tank to play more. Not that it would have made the difference, but I do think it would have helped quite a bit. He’s really doing well defending and fighting on the glass. He scored around the rim tonight with layups and dunks. He missed a couple times from midrange. Again, he’s trying harder to set good screens. I’m appreciating all those little things he’s doing this year. That’s really been the part of his game that’s been MIA his first couple seasons. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 3-6 shooting (5-7 form the line) to go with 9 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He fired a pass to JC who scored a layup on it. He took a feed under the hoop, pumpfaked twice and powered in the layup as defender bit. He lost the dribble out of bounds, looked like it was knocked away from him. He lost the dribble again trying to iso. Second Half: He missed a wing jumper. He missed a putback attempt. He drew FTs on a putback attempt, he made one. His cross-court pass was picked off. He powered in an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He was fouled in transition and made both FTs. Nice D to smother a smaller man on a drive and help force a shotclock violation. He stepped around a man under the hoop to swipe a pass, pushed it out, lost a defender going behind his back and drew FTs, he made one. He missed a FT jumper, twisting a bit. He threw down a lob dunk from Ennis.

Clarkson -- -- Most of his game came in the first half tonight where he scored 13 of his 15 points. In the second half, he went 1-5 and missing some easy ones at times. Seems like he and Randle are developing chemistry. Part of that is Randle setting better screens, but JC is also looking for him. Unfortunately, just 1 assist tonight for him. Luke went to Ennis for stretches in the second half to help with the PG duties (and Hart wasn’t really getting it done). The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-10 shooting (2-3 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 20 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He was blocked on a breakaway layup. He took a bullet feed from Randle and scored a layup. He drained a corner three off the kickout from Hart. He took a pass from Randle on a cut and was fouled shortly later, he made one FT. He took an inbounds with a few seconds left, pushed it out with speed and scored a layup. He attacked from the wing and was fouled on a reverse, he made both FTs. He popped up off the catch and rattled in a three. He had 13 points on 4-5 shooting. Second Half: He missed a three. He attacked off the Randle screen and banked. Weird wing jumper off a fake handoff (his footing wasn’t right). He was blocked on the breakaway when we had numbers. He missed another running layup a few seconds later. He fumbled away a drive.

Brewer -- -- There are times when the ball is whipping around the perimeter and it looks like a good open shot, then you realize it’s Brewer on the receiving end of that pass and you cringe, anticipating a brick (and hoping it somehow goes in). He’s really the wrong kind of role player for this team. We desperately need a guy who can come off the bench and do one thing -- shoot. He’s a great locker room guy and you wish all your players had his attitude, but we really, really need someone who stretches the floor with consistency. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He gave up an And-1 as soon as he entered the game. He missed a wide open three the other way. He scooped up a loose ball that went through Lopez’s hands and dunked. Second Half: He swatted a shot. He was called for an offensive foul in transition.

Ennis -- -- Got to give him some credit for a decent game tonight. He had a couple of steals and a block. He threw a nice lob to Randle and knocked down an open jumper when Randle got away with a moving screen. Lakers chipped away at the lead when he was out there. Better game from him. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and no fouls in 11 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Randle faked him out on a pass, turnover. He drained a jumper working off a Randle screen. He attacked a seam and lobbed to Randle for the dunk. He missed a drive. A big tried posting him up and Ennis stole his pass. The D sagged off him and he airballed a three.

Hart -- -- Man, some of his shots just aren’t even close. I suppose that’s par for the course for our team sometimes, but he’s bricking. Guys may start taking some of his minutes if he doesn’t clean that up a bit. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-4 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist and 2 foul sin 14 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He kicked out to JC for a three. He drew an illegal screen foul fighting through a screen. Complete brick on a pull-up at the FT line. Not close on an open wing three. Second Half: He couldn’t power in a layup. He missed a corner three.

Zubac -- -- Some garbage time run for Zubac. He scored his hoop on a tip in. Defensively, he did a good job getting low and mobile, but wasn’t really tested. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 2 boards and no fouls in 3 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He tipped in a missed drive. He missed a jumphook.

Blue -- -- Good to see him get some minutes and the NBA paycheck. He came in during garbage time when it was out of reach. With as bad as Hart has played lately, Vander may be creeping up just a little on the rotation. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting in 3 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He curled into the paint and scored a layup. He attacked and missed an easy one.

Walton -- -- Lakers not stopping anyone early and Luke called a timeout down 11-4 after just a couple minutes… They took the lead back on an 8-0 run a minute later… Lakers up 20-19 when Luke subbed in JC for Kuzma, going small with BI at the PF… Up 1 with Brewer in at PF for Ingram. Ugh. These should be Randle minutes… Randle and Hart in for Ball and Lopez, Lakers down 6 after that Brewer PF stint… The Lakers trailed 37-34 after the first quarter… Randle, kuzma, Brewer, Hart, JC unit to start… Lakers down 5 when Ingram returned for Brewer with 8:15 left… Luke picked up a tech when he wanted a tripping foul… Down 14, he brought back in all the starters… Lakers with 8 turnovers so far in the second quarter. Ugly… The Lakers trailed 69-56 at the half. Wizards shot 60%. Lakers were 2-11 from three… Lakers down 17 when Randle came in for Lopez midway through the quarter. So how long will we have the Randle, Kuzma, Ingram, KCP, Ball lineup here?… Only a couple minutes before JC came in for Ball… Offense just flatlining while the defense looks better. Luke called a timeout down 20… Ennis in now… A 7-0 run by the Lakers… They trailed 91-77 heading into the fourth… Randle, Ingram, Hart, JC, Ennis unit… They cut it to 9. Randle playing with great energy again… The Wizard starters returned and started to extend the lead. Ball and KCP back in… Deep bench down 20 with 3:06 left… Lakers went 3-23 from three (13%)...

Revenge game for the Wizards

2nd of a back-to-back against elite Eastern Conference teams on their first road trip playing with two rookies and a second year player still learning how to play in the NBA at an elite level

What are the reasons why Lopez (22 Minutes) didn’t do well against Gortat (30 minutes)?

This. A loss was pretty much expected.
Kids went to school yesterday.

Thanks, DB!

Thanks DB

It was a disappointing game.

Lonzo shooting is terrible he does seem confident but I hate when he takes a 3 early in the shot clock.

Shooting as a whole is terrible and I thought the offense didn't move the ball very well tonight.

Thanks DB. Missed the game. This is the first time since Game 2 or so that I've heard we played no defense. Disappointing to see a lackluster effort on defense after starting out the season so well. I hope this is an aberration and not a situation where we need Larry Nance on the floor to keep everyone focused on D.

Not really surprising, second contest of a back-to-back, first real road trip of the season. No one guy was there with the spur needed to call others to the giddyup.

Thanks DB. Completely agree about Luke's rotations with Randle. Luke seems to think that keeping Randle's minutes between 18-24 minutes a game are what keeps him 'locked-in', but really, it is a detriment to the team.

The last few games Randle has been the spark that keeps us competitive. Hopefully Luke comes to his senses and shortens the number of players in his rotations.

Worse, imo.
