Wasted Opportunity… With Lopez out, Luke shifted around starters. Now with Ingram out in this game, he went to some bizarre lineups that featured trios like Brewer, Caruso and Ennis. Or both Bryant and Caruso on the floor for a South Bay reunion to start the fourth. As the second units floundered, the Blazers feasted. They attacked the predictable switches and the Lakers lost leads multiple times.

Every starter, which included three of our rookies, was a positive in the +/-.

With Portland not playing Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum shooting 7-23, you need to win this game. Yes, they got nickel and dimed by the refs with some really poor calls, but they let too many others go off. Meanwhile, with the weird lineups, they struggled to get any kind of rhythm themselves offensively and points where hard to come by.

“They were ready to give us that game, and we were not ready to take it,” Luke said. The Lakers had multiple leads they couldn’t build on and sustain. They fell 95-92 to the Blazers, once again.

Luke lit in to the refs after the game, mentioning a few plays, but specifically a foul on Kuzma on a three that wasn’t called late in the game.

Ball -- -- A couple rebounds short of a triple-double in this one. With Ingram out, that meant more ball handling for Lonzo. He finished with 11 assists, but 5 turnovers, including a key one we threw in the backcourt on a set play. He sank a huge three with 1:45 left and also hit Randle for a couple FTs that allowed us to take a small lead late, but we couldn’t finish the close. He had a shoulder contusion that sent him in the locker room in the final minute of the first half. “We had opportunities to blow the game out, we never took advantage,” Lonzo said. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-13 shooting (2-6 from three) to go with 8 boards, 11 assists, 2 steals The Action: He hit Bogut on the two-man game for a jumphook. He swished a wing three on a kickout. He missed a quick-fire step-back three next time down. His interior pass was picked off. He attacked in transition and was tied up. He missed an early offense three. He airballed a floater. Nice lob to Julius off the two-man game for the And-1 (over the D, but low enough he could run to it). He hit JC for a wing three. He missed a pull-up on a big on a switch. He dunked off an interior give-and-go with Nance. He got backdoored for a dunk on the other end. Too high on a lob to Larry, turnover. He airballed a scoop in the paint. Touch pass to Kuzma in transition to set him up for FTs. He had 5 points, assists and 3 boards at the half. He was a +11. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He attacked the paint and missed the lefty layup, way short. He rushed a wide open corner three and missed. He attacked the paint with speed and lobbed to Randle for the layup. He threw an outlet away. He missed a layup on a drive. He hit KCP cutting for a layup. Wild pass on a set play for Kuzma out of a timeout, turnover. Huge step-back three on a switch to tie the game with 1:45. He found Randle on a scramble for FT next time down. He blocked a drive out of bounds.

Kuzma -- -- He missed a three and a couple jumper early on and had no confidence in his perimeter game for most of the game. This led to a lot of attacks and misses against defenders where he didn’t create an advantage first. We’ve seen him switch gears like this but with more success previously. Late in the game, he’d hit a three. We’d then try to set him up for a three off set play and Lonzo threw it in the backcourt. He was then blocked on another three (a lot of arm, too). The Lakers really struggled to find a go to guy down the stretch as no one really had it going. Kuzma was lucky he wasn’t called for a big turnover, too, stepping in the backcourt on a push off on a key sequence. Tough night after the long minutes last night. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 6-19 shooting (2-6 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He missed a pull-up at the FT line. He missed a 20-footer off a screen. Quick first step on the pass at the three line and he took it for a layup. He wasn’t ready for an advance pass from Lonzo, turnover. He missed a pull-up three in transition. He grabbed an airball but couldn’t finish the quick reverse off it. He couldn’t finish a runner. He posted up the smaller man, attacked across the paint and scored the And-1, he made the FT. He took a touch pass from Lonzo in transition and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He missed a short one on iso. He had 7 points on 2-8 shooting in the first half. Second Half: He backdoored his man and Bogut hit him with the bounce pass for the score. He took an inbounds and drained the wide open three. He couldn’t finish a tough leak out layup nearly behind the backboard when he caught the long outlet. He missed a wing three. He missed a wing three out of a timeout. He missed a tough runner attacking off the three line instead of taking the three. He charged in transition. He traveled on a fake handoff and drive. He attacked and couldn’t finish the runner. Great help D to save Ball on a mismatch under the hoop. He missed a reverse in transition. He attacked and lost it out bounds, wanting the foul. He sank a three on a kickout. He was fouled on a corner jumper, he made one FT. He tipped in a miss on dribble penetration. He was blocked on a three (got arm, too).

Hart -- -- He got the start with Ingram sitting with quad issues. He had a strong first half with 7 points on 3-4 shooting to go with 5 boards and 3 assists. He’d finish with a double-double and one of his better games of the season. His rebounding was superb as was his man D. Rookies shouldn’t be able to defend like that, but that’s impressive. All of our starting guards did a pretty good job on the glass. Hart with 10, KCP with 9 and Lonzo with 8. Scoring wise, he sank one three and had some nice drives and finishes. He’s looking more and more confident out there. Tonight our trio of rookies played 106 minutes combined as starters. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-11 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 10 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 34 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He probed and kicked to Lonzo for three. He stripped a man on help D. He drained a three on a kickout from Bogut. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He filled the lane on the break, muscled through the challenge and scored the reverse. He pulled down a board in a crowd, pushed it out and hit JC for the three. He attacked and handed off to JC for the layup. Great D on iso on Turner for a stop. Another rebound in a crowd to get the stop. He pulled up the dribble and threw a hard bounce pass to Larry between defenders for FTs. He took the pass in transition, attacked hard and scored the layup. Second Half: He up-faked at the three line, attacked down the middle of the lane and scored the easy layup. He drew a foul on the offensive glass from behind Turner to regain possession. He missed a deep three on a kickout. He attacked the paint to his left and scored the lefty layup. He missed a baseline pull-up jumper. He regained a possession getting to an offensive board between defenders. He airballed a pull-up 18-footer off that extra possession. He forced a big to step out of bounds in the post on iso D. He attacked and was blocked. He cut but couldn’t finish at the rim, Kuzma tipped it in, however. Excellent challenge on a fade in the paint out of a timeout to get a stop with a minute left.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He reeled in the wild shooting tonight, but still missed big shots especially in crunch time. He had a couple huge opportunities for threes, but couldn’t not connect on them, going 1-5 from three for the night. Just awful three shooting the past two games. Good work on the defensive glass, but not much going on in this one. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-12 shooting (1-5 from three) to go with 9 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals and no fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +7.. The Action: He swiped a pass, pushed it out and bricked the drive badly, wanting the foul. He stepped out behind a screen, took the pass and hit the three (good control, good balance, good look on that one…more of those, please). He missed a wing pull-up, got it back and hit the pull-up from the same spot a few seconds later. He probed and banked in a 10-footer under control. He missed a sideline three. He had 7 points on 3-7 shooting. Second Half: He took contact in transition and expected a whistle, but still hit the running 13-footer. He iso’d, attacked with speed and fell out of bounds and he lost the dribble, sigh. He missed a pull-up three in transition. He cut off Lonzo’s drive and was rewarded for a layup. He missed a corner three down 2.

Bogut -- -- He fouled out in 15 minutes, the moving screen call that came late in the game lost us a possession. Some good passing sequences tonight, including finding Kuzma on the backdoor bounce pass. They are starting to look a little more comfortable playing with him. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover and 6 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He hit a lefty jumphook for the Lakers first score. He kicked to Hart for a three. Second Half: Great bounce pass to Kuzma cutting backdoor for a layup. Wow, looked like an obvious charge he drew in the post, went as a block and Luke picked up a tech as a result. He was called for an illegal screen, fouling out.

Randle -- -- He came in for Bogut as the backup C this time as Nance moved down the depth chart some in the rotations. Luke ran a ridiculous lineup with Randle out there to start the fourth (Brewer at PF, Caruso and Ennis both in). Then sat Randle when that didn’t’ work. So just 7 minutes for Julius in the first half. Don’t know what we are thinking there, Luke. Some good moments of chemistry with Lonzo and Randle. Hopefully, they continue that. We need to get Julius in the starting lineup at some point this season. More minutes, but better distribution of minutes, allowing him to rest between stints. We did break up his second half with Bogut returning briefly before fouling out. Better than running him in one long stint of 16-18 minutes. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-9 shooting (4-7 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He challenged a shot, grabbed the board, pushed it out coast to coast and scored a layup (foul by him after the score with an flailing off arm). He scored an And-1 off the screen-roll lob from Lonzo, he missed the FT. He missed an 18-footer. He took the ball at the end of the clock, attacked to his right, overpowered a rookie and scored the layup over him with ease. He wasn’t ready for an interior pass from Caruso, turnover. He had 6 points on 3-4 shooting and 2 boards in 7 minutes. Second Half: He scored the layup off the lob from Lonzo. He missed a jumphook in the paint. He was stripped at midcourt on a pushout at the buzzer. He probed, spun and drew FTs, he made both. He had a ball knocked off him in the high post. He bullied his way to FTs on a drive in a crowd, he made one. He grabbed a Kuzma miss, was blocked, powered up and scored on the second attempt. He took a pass from Lonzo, bumped his man in the paint and hit the jumphook off it. He was hammered on a finish attempt when Lonzo found him off a scramble, he made one FT.

Clarkson -- -- He had 10 points on 4-8 shooting in the first half, sinking a couple of threes. Offense was a bit clunky at times with some of the weird lineups out there. With Lonzo out there, I like seeing him off ball for catch and shoots. You could argue needing him for offense late in the game, but I thought his defense was pretty subpar tonight. Worse than his usual (which has actually been pretty reasonable this season). The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-14 shooting (2-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 turnover in 21 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He sank a catch-and-shoot three off the Lonzo feed. He got backdoored for a score. He missed a 15-footer. He missed a jumphook in the paint after recovering a near turnover. He sank a pull-up 16-footer out of a timeout. He swished a pull-up three in transition on a kickout. He missed a step-back three, not a great look. Lazy gather of a pass, turnover as the Blazers pounced. He airballed a forced pull-up at the top of the key. He scored the lefty layup off the Hart handoff. Second Half: He snaked his way into the lane and hit the short floater. Great job crashing the glass to tip in a missed shot. He missed an open wing three. He drew FTs getting yanked on the arm in transition, he made both. He iso’d and missed a three. He probed and lost the ball, wanting a foul. He attacked the paint and scored. He attacked a crowd and missed.

Nance -- -- We ran him as the third big off the bench in the first half. Again going to him at C for whatever reason. Luke then didn’t play in him the second half. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 foul in 10 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He hit a jumphook across the lane. Hart found him cutting for FTs, he missed both. Nice return pass to Lonzo under the hoop for the dunk. He knocked a ball loose under the hoop and recovered it. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Brewer -- -- His offense tonight consisted of a lot of drives and falls to the ground. Pretty much a nothing game from him. Hate seeing him at the PF at times. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 boards, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He slashed into the lane in transition under control and banked in the one-hander. He threw a pass away into the backcourt. He drew FTs on a layup attempt in transition, he made one. He attacked, fell and missed the flip in. He attacked, spun, fell and coughed it up. He missed a corner three on a kickout. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Caruso -- -- A good chunk of minutes for him in some weird lineups. He ended getting benched when he tried to go behind his back in traffic on a pass. We recovered it, but you could see Luke wasn’t happy with the hotdogging. His best play was a recovery to block a man at the rim. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 12 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: Randle wasn’t ready for his interior feed, turnover. Second Half: Late reaction to a cut, but he swatted his man from behind on recovery. He missed a floater in the lane.

Ennis -- -- Missing Ingram threw Luke a curveball, which he whiffed. Ennis came in at the tail end of the first quarter for Lonzo as the Lakers ran both JC and Caruso also with him. Just a weird lineup that we ran to start the second quarter. Don’t know what we were doing. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot and had 1 board and 1 foul in 3 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Bryant -- -- He got his first NBA run to start the fourth quarter. Odd time to go to the rookie. I’d like to see him get some run, but not in the fourth in a close game right now. How about in the first half for a brief stretch where he can try to get comfortable. He drew a foul and FTs, making one for his first point. The Stats: He scored 1 points on 1-2 shooting from the line in 4 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He drew FTs on the drive and dish from JC and made one for his first NBA point.

Walton -- -- He really struggled with the rotations tonight. Hard for the team to get any rhythm with some of these lineups… Both teams struggling to score with consistency early on… Randle in for Bogut, Lakers up 1… Up 2 when JC came in for KCP… Lakers up 4 when Caruso came in for Hart and Brewer in for Kuzma, going small at the PF… Ennis in for Ball up 4… Ennis out for Hart on the final possession… The Lakers led 24-17 after the first quarter… So Randle, Brewer, JC, Caruso, Ennis… They couldn’t score, so Luke called a timeout. Weird lineup. Not going to say that sabotaged Randle, but he sat Randle out of that… Then brought in Hart and KCP for the deep bench guards… Tied 31-31 midway through the quarter, he sat JC and Brewer for Kuzma and Ball… They edged out a small lead. Some good D by Hart during this stretch… A lot more of Lonzo setting the table with Ingram out… Lonzo out for Caruso in the final minute, going to the locker room… The Lakers led 49-44 at the half… He picked up a tech on a bad call in the post against Bogut… Up 6 midway through the quarter when he called a timeout… Up 6, Randle in for Bogut and JC in for Hart… He brought in Caruso for KCP, Lakers up 4 with 3 minutes left… Poor close to the quarter to erase a Laker 8-point lead… The Lakers were tied 70-70 heading into the fourth... He started a Bryant, Randle, Brewer, JC , Caruso unit… Switching getting abused by the Blazers… Hart in for Caruso after he tried a behind-the-back pass in traffic… Lakers trailing by 5 with the bizarre lineups by Luke… Down 5, he brought in Kuzma and Ball to go with JC, Hart and Randle with 8 minutes left… Bogut in down 5. Randle out… All starters in… Bogut fouled out on an illegal screen with 4 minutes left. He brought in Randle down 2… Down 3 with 9 seconds left, he called a timeout. They set up a three for KCP and he bricked. Ball game…

AAAAA DB

My jaw dropped when it was 24-17 lakers and he had Caruso and company out there...lead of course vanished predictably in no time. My impression was Luke believed lakers could recover anytime he wanted by tossing starters back in.

The big mistake to me luke made was choosing to start Hart AND KCP. One of those two (and we know it will be hart) needs to come off the bench with JC. Shoulda started Randle then over hart. Bench mob would then have primarily been JC Hart and Nance.

I think that rotation works better than what Luke did tonight. You called out Luke on the thing that was in the back of my head...wth is with these lineups.

Smh.

The biggest mistake we did with Luke is not insisting his coaching staff have a vet. Rams ensured Mcvay had a guy whose been around like Wade Phillips. Luke has his drinking buddies.

12-20 freethrow shooting.. and this happens every night.

It's a joke honestly. Professionals can't even make the easiest shot in basketball.

They can't even hit em at home. It's not like 20,000 fans are rattling them, there's no excuse.

If these guys ain't good enough to hit freethrows then they ain't good enough to win games simple as that.

It’s been so common, that the Lakers announcers are making fun of the players missing FTs no matter who it is....

It's inexcusable. If we want to start winning some of these close games, it has to start at the freethrow line.

I'm done trying to blame the coach. Luke Walton ain't the one missing freebies.

I am frustrated and disappointed that a sexist BS post remains unchecked in the game thread.

Anyway thanks for the recap DB. Crap game, crap game thread. I’m going to bed.

Did I see 4-7 on 3s for Julius???

The minutes for Julius, JC, and Nance make absolutely no sense.

Glad I missed this one.

Thanks, DB!

Walton comments:
Quote:
I thought guys on our bench were pouting. I thought there was too much feeling sorry for ourselves as opposed to being professionals.

And Bogut:
Quote:
Pouting? Possibly. Guys are frustrated.
There are some injuries right now, different rotations. Guys are frustrated, obviously. You would be lying to say that there are guys that are not frustrated on this team.
Everyone knows what is going on with the salary-cap situation next season and all that. That is just distractions that we can't let affect us.
It was a different feel with this loss [than] all the other losses we have had. We haven't had an effort like this for a while, and this was one of those nights where it was very easily fixable but it kind of wasn't. It wasn't very professional.

One thing I'm happy about is Luke finally calling out the refs. It may backfire the next game. But in the long run, it is important to keep the refs accountable too. It is getting beyond tolerable.

Thanks DB. So tired of continually losing to the Blazers, no matter what.

Lakers came out very flat tonight.

This was a bad loss. There is no way they should have lost to the Blazers at home without Lillard.

Randle Ball on PNR seems like is it working like to see more of that and with other starters in lineup.

Seemed like all the calls went to Portland

Kuzma was consistently forcing his shots when he should have been looking to find someone who was open.

Like to see Bryant and Zubac would rather lose with them than Bogut or Lopez.

Thanks DB

Freethrows and defensive rebounding should be addressed. I know Luke's making the rotation players make 100 freethrows after practice (just heard it this morning on Access Sportsnet). The next step should be inserting Zubac or Bryant in there (at least 20 minutes) for defensive rebounding. The front court of Kuz and Randle is just too small.

This is about the 4th or 7th game we should've won if we made freethrows.
