Netflix, Will Smith, and Ninety million budget movie ‘Bright’

LINK

Netflix invested $90 million in the film. I don't know what they paid Will Smith, he supposedly made more than Joel Edgerton. I watched it, wasn't impressed.

Will supposedly turned down a role in Independence Day II because he didn't want to do anymore science fictions. IMO he picked the wrong film to return to the genre.

Not a good time to make a film with racial overtones. I'd not be surprised if the company loses money on this one. It didn't get good reviews.

He never was in a Shakespearean, Denzel Washington class. His movies didn't type cast him though. His career has really run the gamut. He's at or near the top of highest paid actors.

He is but to me he really doesn't have that many stand out performances. I mean he was good in Ali and Pursuit of Happiness. Beyond those 2 there are really a TON of forgettable experiences.

I liked him in Bagger Vance. He played the unassuming caddie genius to the T. I've never gotten a full grip on if he was a angel, did Jack Lemon die and it was him waving to him at the end.

I thought it was fantastic!!!! As did 90% of the fans who voiced their RT approval.

Repeat 90% FAN APPROVAL!!!!

the critics panned it but that just continues to prove they are clueless.

The metrics were solid for Netflix and they are already greenlit for another season, which is great because it established an awesome world and some intriguing charachters. Would really love if they made it a series though instead of another movie.

Bright is another Homerun for Netflix.
Highly Recommended!!!!

I didn't but its not surprising its panned the movie industry is faltering thanks to streaming like Amazon and Netflix why go to the theater to watch this movie when you can do it from your home and you don't have to pay those tickets as well as snacks etc.

What better way to get people to turn away from this by panning a movie on Netflix so then you would go to the theater and these critics can make their money.

That's a surprise. I guess it's a matter of taste.

Gotta be much much more than just taste to pull a 90% fan rating. That's just incredible. Also the metrics must be through the roof to be getting an immediate Greenlight for a sequal only a couple of days after the premiere for a $90+Mill film. The numbers must be flat out incredible.

heard it got bad reviews, so I passed. I did binge a little this week and went back and watched Netflix Friends from College (Season 1)...it was ok....definitely had some funny scenes. By the end, i was open to Season 2.

Also, watched the recently concluded Amazon Prime series Red Oaks (Seasons 1-3, 26 half hour episodes)....and I really liked it. It is set in the 1980's, and has a very '80's Romcom feel. Highly recommend it.

I liked it. I'm not sure I want more of it and wouldn't say it was special in any way, but, as a guy who generally likes sci-fi/fantasy/super hero type stuff, I was entertained Reminded me of that Vin Diesel Witchhunter movie. Maybe a little better than that.

Will Smith has countless movie projects he's given first dibs to accept, remains extremely selective on his movies, yet still finds himself in pretty large ratio of disappointments

My favorite:

It's not good, but it's something to watch on a lazy day.

It's good enough for that

Probably some fake fan reviews in there or something. I don’t trust Yelp scores either.

There is no way Bright is Will Smith’s best film to date.

Doubt it. Netflix wouldn't greenlight a $90 mill plus sequal so quickly if the metrics weren't outstanding. Check out some other forums, fans are loving it.

Watched it last night. I didn't care for it and I'm not a Will Smith hater. I just had trouble accepting the story's premise from the start and it just carried through the whole movie. Magic influenced world history yet society developed exactly as it did without it except Elves, Orcs and other magical beings were absorbed into human culture. Trying to blend magic into a street cop movie just didn't work IMO.

I've read the "LOTR" and "Training Day" comparisons a few times and it does contain elements from both of those movies, but it seemed closer to "Alien Nation" and "Underworld" because racial tension is at the core of the story and magic and LAPD corruption were just side elements. Watching it I couldn't help but compare the Elves and Orcs to the Vampires and Lycans in "Underworld".

Smith's good-natured and clueless partner was pretty similar to Mandy Patinkin's character in "Alien Nation". It's just a twist on the familiar buddy-cop theme of a veteran, and often a bit racist, cop teaming up with a green minority partner that helps the vet cop gain insight and understanding.

It was fine, but kind of a waste of a pretty decent premise. The movie would have benefitted from being a limited series of six to twelve episodes instead, giving more time for the world and characters to develop. The world itself was the draw, and a feature length film isn’t enough time for it to breath.
