Lockdown… The Lakers coughed up 25 turnovers in the game, yet only allowed 86 points. Those numbers don’t usually go together.

It was a defensive effort from the tip.

The starters got the Lakers out to an 18-point lead in the first quarter off a lengthy 17-0 run where they were locking down and getting scores in transition. The lead, however, would be erased when Luke went to his second unit. The Lakers only led by 4 after the end of the first quarter.

In the third they would fall behind briefly, but after a timeout, they drained a series of threes to take the lead back. Lopez was on fire during this stretch.

“The first unit defensively were really good,” Luke said, “and Julius and Brook were really good with the talking out there.”

The Kings had to go through multiple defenders again and again to try to score against and just couldn’t put the ball in the hoop with consistency, grinding to a halt in the final quarter with just 12 points.

Randle led the team with 22 points and 14 boards, while rookie Lonzo Ball stuffed stats across multiple columns. Both players would end the night with a +33 while on the floor in the Lakers 99-86 win over the Kings.

Ball -- -- The quadruple-five tonight: 5 points, 11 assists (only 1 turnover), 11 boards and 5 steals. He went 1-5 from three in the first half, rushing his shot quite a bit. He still had 7 assists, 6 boards and 3 assists contributing everywhere else on the court. Our offense looks better when he’s out there, but really, the defense he brings with rotations, anticipation, challenges and boards just makes such a difference. And he’s a rookie – a young one. You should not be getting that kind of D and decision making at his age. (He did get criticized for a three late in the game when we should have run clock…but those mental mistaks with all he does are few and far between). “We just need to keep it simple, man. Defend and pace,” Lonzo said. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-10 shooting (1-7 from three) to go with 11 boards, 11 assists, 5 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 37 minutes. He was a +33. The Action: He missed a three behind a screen, rushing it a little. He hit Ingram in transition for the corner three. He hit Ingram in the other corner for a transition three. He changed directions, attacked and missed the lefty layup. He attacked and missed a runner off glass. He missed a three. He setup Larry on the lob for FTs. Bad off-the-board pass to Randle on the break, who somehow was able to finish it. He missed a quick-fire corner three. He stripped a big from behind. He missed a wing three, rushed again. He zipped a bullet to KCP for the And-1 layup (waited for the passing lane just a beat before firing that). He swished a three trailing the break, better rhythm. Second Half: He blocked Fox’s drive. He tipped in a Lopez missed three to force a timeout. He missed a 40-foot three trying to beat the shotclock, didn’t hit iron. He hit Nance rolling for the layup. Rebound and quick outlet to Randle down court for the score. He tapped out an offensive board, got it back then lobbed to Ingram cutting baseline for the dunk. He airballed a wide open three. He swiped the ball at midcourt and hit Ingram for the dunk.

Randle -- -- I’m sure the turnovers bugged his critics to no end, but Randle played some excellent two-way impact ball despite that. Haters will hate, though. In the first half, he led the Lakers with 13 points on 5-9 shooting and 5 boards in his 15 minutes (a +18 while out there). They thrived when he was out there in the second half. He and Lonzo were the common thread to the Lakers success as they both had the +33, despite not always on the court at the same time. The defense just didn’t get compromised with any consistency when they were out there. Randle had some excellent rotations on help D and he hit the boards to lead the team there. The middle of the paint and the boards was controlled. When it was those Nance/Kuzma lineups, we wilted. Offensively, he got out on the break for scores, he sank a three, he hit the fade in the paint and knocked down FTs. This is how many minutes he should typically be getting. Not 20, not 15 or 11. “Mentally, we can be a lot better at things,” Julius said. The turnovers were sometimes mental, getting a little lazy or trying to go into traffic. I think he had a couple trying to iso with the shotclock low, as well. Luke said when he’s under control on the drives, we usually get something good out of it. “He had moments where he was great at it and he had moments where he over penetrated and we got in trouble on it,” Luke said. Still just his third year of NBA ball. Decision making improves with age. Luke also praised him as one of the top bigs defensively switching 1 through 5 in the league. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 8-13 shooting (1-1 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 14 boards (3 offensive), 6 assists, 1 steal, 6 turnovers and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a +33. The Action: He sank a corner three on a kickout. He drew FTs on the break with KCP next time down, he made both. He blew past his man in early offense and scored the layup. Great D to rotate back to his man after a switch as the pass was coming and he smothered him to help get the stop. He posted up and swished the fade in the paint. He attacked right, brought it back left and missed. He guided in an off-the-board pass for a layup (great save of that play). He missed a short one in the paint but got it back. He didn’t pass it on the break and instead choked the layup (should have finished that, but had to contort around a defender). Poor read trying to thread a pass that wasn’t three, turnover. He attacked, spun down the middle of the lane and hit the layup. Out of control on the dribble, turnover. He was called for an illegal D and then a tech. Second Half: He posted up VC, spun to the left and hit off glass with his left for the And-1, he missed the FT, but got the rebound. He hit Lopez for a three. He kicked to KCP for three on the break. He was stripped in the paint. He hit Lopez for another three. He drew a charge on Randolph in the low post. He iso’d with the clock low and drew FTs, he made both. He scored a breakaway layup off the Ball rebound and outlet. He hit KCP cutting for a layup. He scored an And-1 layup off the drive and dish from Kuzma, he made the FT. Swing pass picked off (lecture from Luke on that). He lost the handle trying to iso against the shotclock. He attacked and missed a runner.

Ingram -- -- Excellent start to the game, getting out in transition for layups or threes and finishing. He’d pick up some foul trouble in the first half that would limit his time, but he was a +20 in his 12 minutes. The foul trouble slowed him down in the second half. Too many turnovers with his passing and strips in the paint. Despite that, I’m liking the three ball looking so much more confident. And I like that the ball is moving and we’re seeing scores off cuts more. This would have likely been a much bigger game from him if he could have stayed on the court. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-9 shooting (2-3 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 1 block, 6 turnovers and 4 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +19. The Action: He got his man on his hip, stepped in from the elbow and scooped in the layup. Nice recovery to block a perimeter shot. He sank a corner three in transition. He took the outlet, weaved through traffic and scored the layup. He drained a corner three from the other side in transition next time down. He drew FTs getting out in transition, he made one. He had the ball swiped from him for a score the other way. He was blocked on a jumper. Second Half: He missed a three straight away, a little flat. Out of control on the break against multiple defenders and he picked up his fourth foul. He choked a layup on a baseline drive. He threw down the lob dunk from Lonzo on a baseline cut weakside. He threw it away on the break. He attacked from the wing and hit Kuzma cutting for the And-1. He attacked, spun and threw it away. He was stripped in the paint. He dunked off the Lonzo steal.

Lopez -- -- On fire from three. “I’m just trying to shoot it when I’m open and have a good look,” he said after sinking 5-8 from three. Foul trouble cut down his minutes tonight because he was strong on both ends of the floor. The Randle/Lopez unit locked down to start the game. Just some very good help D by both and they closed down the paint. Offensively, with Brook’s spacing, that just makes it easier for Randle to play in the paint. Excellent last couple of games defensively from Lopez. For the Kings, it felt like not only did they have to deal with their initial defender helping on them, but another Laker was usually in the mix as well. When you have to go through multiple defenders to get a score with frequency, you aren’t going to score with frequency. Want to see more of this. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 6-9 shooting (5-8 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +15. The Action: He missed a three trailing the break. He hit an easy jumphook in the post. Short on a three and he wanted the foul. He swished a sideline three on a swing pass. He drained a two-for-one three. Second Half: He attacked off the dribble down the lane and drew FTS, he made one. He sank a wing three out of a timeout. He swished another three in transition next time down. He swished another three in transition. He missed a deep heatcheck three next time down (Lonzo tipped it in).

Caldwell-Pope -- -- “We were just trying to play aggressive. We hit first,” KCP said. Another solid game from him. Shot selection has been much better. With Lonzo out there, the team is changing ends with speed with more consistency. He got in on a couple scores in transition, and also knocked down a couple threes. The prettiest score from him was on a wicked crossover at the elbow that nailed a defender to the floor and left him alone for a layup. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 5-11 shooting (2-7 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 33 minutes. He was a +27. The Action: He swished a wing three on our first possession. He kicked to Randle for a corner three. He swiped the ball and hit Randle for FTs on the break. He missed a wing three in transition. Sweet crossover at the elbow to leave a defender nailed to the floor to score the layup. He missed a three when his man went under the screen. He scored an And-1 layup on the break when Lonzo hit him, he made the FT. He poked a ball loose on the other end, pushed it out with speed and earned more FTs a few seconds later, he made both. He lost his man, then missed the long wing jumper. He traveled on the perimeter. Second Half: He missed a three behind a screen. He sank a three in transition. He didn’t force the three but instead hit Nance rolling for the layup. He cut off the overplay and Randle hit him for the layup. He missed a pull-up three in transition. Fouled on the perimeter for FTs, he made one. He measured and missed a three out of a timeout. Nice hustle back in transition to reject a shot out of bounds.

Kuzma -- -- Love some of the passing tonight. The 3 assists and 4 turnovers doesn’t look great, but he had a couple turnovers stepping on the sidelines. Still, when he gets the defense scrambling with his speed and starts making that extra pass, he’s got some skills there – shovel passes and no-lookers to guys like Nance tonight for dunks. Defensively, he had another block tonight. His help D challenges lately have been excellent. That makes such a difference and he gets off the floor so quickly. Keep that up. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-9 shooting (1-4 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 3 steals, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He swished an open sideline three on a kickout. He stepped on the sideline on the catch, turnover. He gave up a putback And-1 not boxing out his man. Another turnover stepping on the sideline. He faced up an airballed a sideline jumper. Great help D to swat Fox out of bounds from behind. He airballed a pull-up three at the buzzer. Second Half: He slipped the screen, took the pass, drew the help and shoveled it to Nance for the dunk. He cut off baseline and knocked the ball loose to get a stop. He cut baseline and Hart found him for the layup. He missed a corner three. Great help D rotation to stop a drive. Quick drive right and he scored. He missed a wing three. He missed a tip in attempt. He up-faked to lose his man, quickly attacked baseline and shoveled it to Larry for the And-1 dunk. Wow, he whipped a no-look pass to Randle on a scramble play for an And-1. He cut off of Ingram’s drive, took the pass, contact, brought the ball down and still muscled it up and in for the And-1, he missed the FT. He iso’d and coughed it up.

Clarkson -- -- Poor game from JC. He had three fouls in his first 6 minutes and that limited his playing time, which was fine since he wasn’t defending very well and the scoring was not there. He and Nance at C are just a poor combo. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He took an inbounds and coughed it up, turnover. He probed off the high screen and hit the floater. He scored a layup, cutting off a save by Nance to Hart. Second Half: He got his man in jail, didn’t take the shot and threw it away instead. He missed a step-back three on iso. He missed a wing three. He attacked the paint and threw it away. He missed a corner three.

Nance -- -- Luke said the team mentally relaxed after building the 18-point lead, but really the second unit just got worked. A -14 in the first half in his 8 minutes at the C spot for Nance. When we ran him and Randle together late in the third, they thrived. Sit Randle, go to Nance again at the C spot and the lead they built was cut in half. Luke is killing me with this. This game, he even sat Randle early in the first quarter and could have brought him back to run at the C spot (after you run Nance got some run with Lopez to limit his time at C). Just need to stagger the subs just a little more to reduce those Nance at C stretch. I praised Nance in the last game for setting the hardest screens. Tonight he was whistled for a couple of moving ones to turn the ball over. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-6 shooting (2-5 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He kicked out to Kuzma for a three. He missed a jumphook in the post. Illegal screen to turn it over. He saved a ball inbounds and it led to a Clarkson score. A good help challenge to get a stop and push out the break. He drew FTs on the lob from Zo and made one. Second Half: He scored a layup on the screen-roll with Lonzo. He scored a layup rolling to the hoop for KCP to find him. He dunked off the interior feed from Kuzma. He hit the floor for a loose ball on D to get a stop and FTs, he made one. Illegal screen, turnover. He threw down the And-1 dunk off the drive and dish from Kuzma, he missed the FT.

Hart -- -- A lot of action at the SF again. I’m guessing that’s where we see most of his minutes these days unless JC gets moved. He went scoreless tonight and played a quiet game. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He missed a corner three. He hit JC cutting for a layup after a Nance save. Second Half: He stopped in the paint and then found Kuzma cutting for the reverse layup. He was stripped on a drive down the middle of the lane.

Brewer -- -- Luke got him run in the first quarter in an odd rotation. Brewer was a -14 in his 6 minutes (Nance at C unit, which is usually awful…add Brewer out there to throw a little more gas on the fire). The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 1 board in 6 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He drew a charge in transition to get a stop. He missed a half-court heave at the buzzer. Second Half:

Ennis -- -- He didn’t do much while out there tonight. He couldn’t finish on any of his drives and didn’t set anyone up for scores. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting to go with 1 board and 1 foul in 9 minutes. He was a -22. The Action: He was blocked on a drive. He choked a layup on a drive down the middle of the lane. Second Half: He tapped out an offensive board. He missed a layup on a drive.

Walton -- -- The Lakers pulled out to a 15-6 lead off an early 10-0 run to force a timeout (three threes early on)…. The run extended to 17-0 when the next timeout came. Defensively, they are helping on challenges and no King has been getting a clean look… An 18-point lead when Ingram and Ball sat for Brewer and Ennis with over 5 minutes left in the quarter. Why not ride the hot unit longer?… Up 15 when Kuzma and Nance came in for Lopez and Randle a minute later… Luke called a timeout shortly later up 11. Nance getting scored on… JC in for KCP out of that… No defensive presence by this unit. JC, Kuzma, Nance all getting beat… The Lakers led 31-27 after the first quarter… He started the second quarter with Nance, Kuzma, Hart, JC and Ball… He brought in Ingram for Clarkson who picked up his third foul… Lakers up 1 when Nance finally sat for Lopez with 8 minutes left. Poor Nance. Why are we playing him at C?… Ingram picked up his third foul and had to sit with 4 minutes left for Hart… He sat Randle for Kuzma after Randle picked up an illegal D and tech. A 5-point possession for the Kings… The Lakers led 53-52 at the half. Bench outscored 21-8 in the half… Ingram quickly picked up his fourth foul… The Lakers fell back by 8 after less than 3 minutes and Luke called a timeout… The Lakers sank three threes in a row out of that timeout to take the lead back. The play out of the timeout was for Lopez for a three on a ball reverse. Hart came in for Ingram, as well, during that stretch… The Lakers were up 4 when the Kings timeout came. Lopez on fire from three… Lopez picked up his fifth foul and had to sit for Nance (Randle at C)… Randle/Nance igniting this unit… They pushed out to a 80-69 lead when the Kings timeout came with 2:53 left. Luke sat Randle out of that to slide Nance over to C. Also sat Lonzo for JC. Bench needs to step up here… Ennis in for KCP with a minute left, Lakers up 13… Lakers losing their flow with this unit, but still able to keep the buffer… The Lakers led 84-74 with 12 minutes left… He started the Nance, Kuzma, Hart, JC, Ennis unit that finished the third… Predictably, this unit had the lead cut to 5 and Luke called a timeout with 9:15 left… He brought back in Lonzo and Ingram for Hart and Ennis out of that. Nance still at C, but a little more length and a lot more offense… KCP in for JC… Randle in for Nance, Lakers up 8... They Lakers controlled it from here despite not scoring… Too many turnovers tonight (25), but they won the fourth quarter 15-12 with some good D… Luke got on the team afterward for the sloppy play…

Thanks DB! Great win! FINALLY a game that was fun to watch too! Lonzo Ball makes a difference in so many ways. Really enjoyed the passing tonight, not just Ball but Randle and Kuz too!

Also, great to see the defense return. Sac shot 34.5%.

Thanks, DB!

IMHO Luke does not really deserve to wave that whip as long as he plays Nance at C.
But he got the first unit to play D again.

Luke in the last five games:

Yeah, went back and forth on that one. Almost went with two emojis but that would mess your tracking. The Nance stuff kills me. It’s frustrating as heck to watch, but I do feel like the team is looking more like themselves defensively even if that does kill them. That’s a big positive. Credit to Lonzo and Brook for helping there, but I see Kuzma, Ingram and others playing much better D in the past couple so I’ll give credit for that.

Ingram is the most talented player on this team.

Everyone (even the doubters) will realize this in a few seasons..

Thanks as always DB.

Like to see Zubac instead of Nance at backup center.

Randle continues to bring it in all phases of the game. How is he not part of the young core? He is becoming mentally tough too.

BI seems to have played better last few games.

Good to have Lonzo back.

Seems like LaVar calling them out has been a positive with 2 straight.

DB doing work! Thanks! Hopefully we get a stud next year who will be able to consistently score from a half court offense. ZO does give guys easier shots and his up tempo masks our lack of shooters and guys who can create.

Thanks DB! Lonzo's really proving his worth to the team. He makes others better and raises the overall quality of play. Hope we continue to play like this.

Randle is a physically talented player.

Is he your PF, hence need a center that has an outside game (Lopez, Boogie, KAT, etc.) since he needs space to operate

Is he your starting PF (assuming that the Lakers are looking to be an elite team) or C since he is not able to be consistently effective on offense and he is not a rim protector against elite teams.

Is he your Draymond Green-type player with an outside team that deserves a Max Contract

Randle will be well-paid next year, the question is which team?

Emplay has offered some interesting trade scenarios. We will see if Magic/Rob has the same magic as Mitch (http://www.lakersnation.com/lakers-news-mitch-kupchak-opens-up-about-possible-reason-he-was-fired/2017/09/26/) regarding doing amazing trades at various part of his career
