It was really good! Sound design was incredible. Quite a year for Pitt. Some absolutely masterful set pieces. Some on the nosey stuff but it worked for me.

Just an insane mix of naked emotion, cold distance, and off-the-wall set pieces (space [redacted]!). So happy it got made even if I'm more in a state of appreciation than love of the film right now.

Right on about the sound design and I dug the subtlety of the Max Richter score.

Kinda want an extended Odyssey Cut that includes whatever the films version of the French Plantation scene is.

So many cinematic parallels. In my headcanon Ad Astra is part of the Event Horizon Cinematic Universe.

Here's a nice short interview with Gray where he says he got about 90% of the movie he wanted made and compares Roy McBride to Telemachus: link.

I was late to the party myself, just started catching up this year. Z is a nice companion piece to Ad Astra - it also draws inspiration from Apocalypse Now - and there are smart people out there who absolutely adore it. My favorites of his so far are The Immigrant and Two Lovers.

Overall Gray seems to me to be a precise technician who makes impeccably crafted movies that are also nakedly sincere. It's a tough needle to thread between arthouse cool and classic movie melodrama, but his efforts are always impressive.

Ad Astra just destroys manbuns. They're over now. If you have a manbun, your hair is cancelled.

Not a new observation in the least, but The Auteur Space Movie is officially where stoic men - especially fathers - go to explore their vulnerability. And that's a good thing.

I really dig how batcrap insane it is within its cold, austere veneer. It's not High Life nuts, but Christopher Nolan only wishes he had thought of space [redacted].

I definitely got the Apocalypse Now vibe from the structure/pacing of the movie. I thought it was okay. Some of the visuals (that free fall in the opening scene) were incredible. Brad was phenomenal.
I was left wanting more though. It just didn't feel like the epic I thought it was going to be. Granted this has more to do with my expectations than the movie itself.

Uncut Gems trailer, baby!

This is my Avengers: Endgame. This is what I've been waiting a decade for. Safdie Bros > Russo cucks.

Critics are commenting that this awesome trailer doesn't fully convey that this movie is a non-stop panic attack.

And now I want to see it even more.

They watched Goodfellas and were like, "hey, let's make all our movies as anxiety inducing as the helicopter scene" and...it works!

And it has Mike Francesca in it!

I'm not Jewish, I haven't lived in New York in years, I've never listened to Mike Francesca, KG is the enemy, and Sandler is hit or miss to me, and this trailer makes me want to learn Hebrew, watch Little Nicky again, and become a Mets fan.

Days like this really challenge my no trailer policy.

I know I'm not the only one who thought Sandler was John Turturo in the trailer.

It's funny how even as Gray triples his budget for this movie, he still makes his same intimate epic. Disney could give him $200M to helm an MCU X-Men movie and Gray would make a 2.5 hour film about Professor X's profound sense of loss and alienation because he is telepathically linked to the minds of others.

It's going to be the most Jewish movie to be released since Zohan.
