Top first time watches of 2020 at the halfway mark:

1) The Lady Eve (1941; Stuges)
2) Army of Shadows (1969; Melville)
3) Kagero-za (1981; Suzuki)
4) Trial on the Road (1971/85; German)
5) Paris Qui Dort (1924; Clair)
6) The Passenger (1975; Antonioni)
7) Portrait of Jason (1967; Clarke)
8) California Split (1974; Altman)
9) Wake in Fright (1971; Kotcheff)
10) tie: Le Circle Rouge (1970; Melville) and Possession (1983; Zulawski)

Hon. mention to some damn good flicks from the 2010s: A Hidden Life, The Look of Silence, The Last of the Unjust, Low Tide, Laurence, Anyways, Neon Bull, Baden, Baden, Yourself and Yours, and Portrait of a Lady on Fire among others.

And as always, classic flicks like Rififfi, Singin' in the Rain, Leon Morin, Priest, Heroic Purgatory, Tristana, Police Story, Cairo Station, Ball of Fire, and Steamboat Bill, Jr. all still hold up.

Wow: I haven't seen any of those (points up, to BVH's previous post).

I'll get to work on acquiring some of those, hopefully soon.

Some of them are hard to track down without torrents or purchasing physical media (I do both).

But California Split is streaming on Prime in its uncut glory.

I recommend Fat City, directed by John Huston back in 1972. I read the novel years ago, and though I'm usually disappointed with the film treatment, I decided to give it a try. This movie is a haunting portrayal of society's lowest rung, and the self-destructive behavior and myths that they live by to distract them from inevitable doom.

That's one of the reasons I like it.

As a hobby, I edit, too...audio/music editing.

Sadly the Bergman mega-collection doesn't seem to be included in the B&N sale. But Criterion usually has a second 24-hour flash sale in the fall and that set looks sexy.

Poorly thought out movie pairing #1:

The Old Guard (2020) - a middling, more adult-oriented superhero action flick indebted to The Highlander, the excellent international cast led by Charlize Theron and Kiki Layne has their charisma and natural chemistry cheapened by a mediocre script. A couple solid early action set pieces and Theron being one of the best actors alive keep it from being totally ignorable. A Netflix "original," it'll be around, so no need to rush to see it.

Black Rain (1989) - no, not the Ridley Scott film of the same name that also debuted in '89, this is instead a masterful, devastating drama from legendary filmmaker Shohei Immamura about a group of Hiroshima survivors living in the countryside with the pall of sickness and death from radiation exposure hanging over the bucolic setting. The opening ten minutes set on August 6th, 1945 are a horror movie, which is revisited in a handful of flashbacks in the first hour, but the film is primarily focused on the year 1950 as an older, childless couple tries to marry off their 25-year-old niece who is "devalued" as a mate due to her exposure to black rain that fell from the skies outside of the blast's epicenter. One of the great anti-war films, Black Rain is also a scathing depiction of post-war Japanese society through the lens of an alternative nuclear family trying to move forward through immense trauma and grief in the shortened time they have left. It can be hard to track down and it's a harrowing watch despite some welcome moments of levity, but what an underrated great movie.

For the longest time I didn't "get" Ferrara. Currently I do not get:

Peter Bogdanovich. I felt like I understood the appeal in his revered '70s movies when I first saw them twenty years ago, but now even his best films seem like early edition boomer nostalgia porn.

Who or what in movies do you not "get?"

Indiana Jones isn’t good, and not to pick on Harrison Ford, but I absolutely refuse to believe that anybody actually enjoys Blade Runner.

I enjoyed the first 3 Indy flicks. The most recent one was just awful, however. It was like they were just going through the motions, all of them (including Cate Blanchett), and even the special effects looked super fake.

Blade Runner was okay but I prefer the sequel. Or if I had to pick another sci-fi from that era, id rather watch Tron (if that counts).

I’ve been trying to catch up on some classics through HBOMax. Finally watched Rebel Without a Cause and I’m not sure where it’s rated now (I’ve heard both over and underrated movie) but I’ll just say I thought it was really good. Network, Citizen Kane, North by Northwest, Great Dictator, and Lolita are also in my queue.

On the Hulu front I watch Palm Springs with Andy Samberg. I really enjoyed it and would say it’s best to go into it blind/only knowing it’s a comedy. I also caught Atonement which lived up to the hype. I’ve been reading The Splendid and The Vile which is about the Battle of Britain so it was cool to see some of those events play out during the movie.

Oh and one additional note, one that should be obvious, don’t waste your time on Midway. The trailer screamed bad movie and honestly that’s putting it lightly. I can’t think of one positive thing to say about the movie aside from the fact that I thankfully had the ability to fast forward through a lot of it.

My PMs are open any time if you want to admit in private that it’s bad.

The Indy movies never clicked with me as a kid. I watched Raiders a couple months ago to see if anything had changed. I really wanted to get why people love it so much. Still don’t get it.

The end of Bad Boys For Life left open another chapter. Mike told his new found son there was a option for him to pay down some of his criminal debt. He said yes. Anyone know if there's another Bad Boys coming?
