I like the idea of a Laker tribute statue for Elgin. He was the most electric player of his time for me, maybe my favorite Laker of all-time. Not many folks talk about him much anymore, but I guess that follows from remembering that most of us who saw him play at his best are now, ahem, ancient or dead, not out here blogging."
"The best corner-man in the game."
Jerry West, from "The Perfect Team"
"I have never seen a better player that the young Elgin Baylor. Before Jerry joined the team, Elgin single-handedly got that team to the NBA Finals on his shoulders, alone."

Is as good as any Laker who every played.
Probably put him behind Magic and that's it. |

It seems appropriate that the Lakers would build a statue to the architect of all those great Clippers teams. |

Congrats Elgin. Well deserved. _________________ Nobody in the NBA can touch the Laker brand, which, like the uniform color, is pure gold. |

Elgin had bad timing. His heyday was the early 60s, when the league was still developing and the only guys who are really remembered are Wilt and Russell.
He hurt his knee in the mid 60s and was never the same, and then retired right before the Lakers won a ring.
Then he carried the stench of all those crappy Clippers teams.
I see him as en evolutionary player toward the above the rim style of play of the NBA, leading to Dr. J and to MJ, etc.
He doesn't get his due, but that's true of a lot of the 1960s guys. |

Those career averages are amazing. Never realized he played at that level for such a long period of time. |

Forgive the ignorance of someone who has never been to LA before, but who has statues at Staples? Magic, Cap, West and the big guy in my avatar?
Anyway, I'm happy they are celebrating Baylor while he is alive. At the age of 83, it must be a great joy for this Laker Legend. _________________ .... |

Elgin is easily an all-time great, top 10ish type guy. It's a little sad that his greatness was diminished a bit by those poor Clipper teams.
10 1st-team All NBA's - tied for second with the likes of MJ and Kareem and only behind Kobe, LBJ, and the Mailman, who each have 11.
On that note, crazy that LBJ will likely set the record for most 1st-team All NBA's after this season... |

After Baylor's employment discrimination lawsuit against the clippers I'm not surprised they didn't get in on this.
However it's somewhat poetic justice that he'll have a statue outside their arena and the Lakers'. |

Ohm Youngmisuk - ESPN Staff Writer:
Quote: | The Lakers will unveil their latest statue of Elgin Baylor outside Staples Center on April 6 prior to the Lakers playing Minnesota.
In 14 seasons for the Minneapolis and LA Lakers, Baylor was an 11-time All-Star and a 10-time First Team All-NBA performer. Baylor averaged 27.4 points, 13.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 846 games.
"I am thrilled that 60 years after the Minneapolis Lakers drafted Elgin, we are able to celebrate and honor him with a statue," said Lakers controlling owner Jeanie Buss. "Not only is Elgin a part of the Lakers family, his contributions to the game of basketball earned him a place in the Hall of Fame. His list of accomplishments are unparalleled and I can't wait to see his statue at Star Plaza alongside the other Lakers legends." |
