What an awesome moment. For anyone that grew up with the Kobe-Shaq Lakers, this was cathartic. Never thought we’d get ‘closure’ on this, but we just did. |

Glad to see Shaqobe find the good in some truly great and sometimes turbulent times.
Both men owned their failings Kobe in this one took accountability for 2004
Shaq for the splitting up of the team with how he acted towards Kobe, Buss and Mitch ...
For the younger members of our fanbase it got real ugly with the media stuff going back and forth that I wasnt even enjoying that 2004 season. It wasnt just Shaqobe but Phil and GP didnt get along either ...not sure we beat Detroit ...but if there was team harmony no way we lose in 5 either.
And it all started with Kobe in colorado and continued with Shaq isolating Kobe in his Hawaii pressor naming every teammate but Kobe. Wasted talent. Continued with Malone flirting eith Vanessa ...smh. |

That was a genuinely fascinating and revealing interview. Shaq taking responsibility for breaking up the dynasty, Kobe taking responsibility for losing against the Pistons, both still enjoying beating up on the Queens, Kobe being unapologetic to an almost sociopathic degree about what that 5th ring meant -- it's interesting how some time and distance can both change things completely, yet also remain exactly the same. |

I don't think Shaq had to be dominant for the Lakers to win. He just had to accept the fact that Kobe has to be the man then.2005 Shaq was comparable to 2008-2010 Gasol as far as impact on the team. Difference was, Gasol was willing to defer to Kobe, Shaq wasn't. |
That was one of the big issues though. Shaq was never going to be okay with Kobe being the man just like he was never going to show up ready for the season, and was never going to make his free throws. The team would have to deal with both his strengths and his weaknesses.
I sound like I’m hating on Shaq but the guy I’d really like to see apologize is Dwight Howard. At least Shaq won a ring before he became less serious. Howard had lower standards. |

Like I said in another thread, Shaq and Kobe had a real deal true blue brotherhood. It was good, it was bad, it was ugly. It was the best of times, it was worst of times. They were as frustrating as they were exhilarating. Their connection on the court was cosmic, and even in retirement there is still a deep soul tie between these two. Despite how it all crashed and burned, I look back on those years with great fondness. _________________ So glad we gave you your flowers while you were here, Kobe. |

Thanks....funny enough their childhoods were pretty similar and shaped how viewed themselves against their competition. |

Shaq: "...I was crazy --"
Kobe: "We both weren't necessarily stable."

Great interview. Enjoyed every second of it. Both legends. The confidence they had for each other was amazing. Loved it when Shaq said he didnt need to get ready for duncan. Classic.
If these two some how stayd together for few more years than that means at least 2 less championships for duncan. |

Notice how they both agree that they should have won that series EASILY. That’s why I thought it seemed like they still didn’t think much of the Pistons.
I wonder how an older Kobe does in that series. In that interview it looks like Kobe really believed it was winnable if he had done a better job. Would an older Kobe with his extra knowledge and experience win it all in 2004? Notice how he never said “Detroit was the better team” or “injuries gave us no shot.” He really thinks he let one get away that year. |

2004 was on Kobe... but he had a lot going on to be fair. Shoulder surgery before the season. The Colorado thing. Shaq feud at its high point. He basically withdrew even further into himself so he wasn't in the mood to get his teammates involved. We got to the finals just on sheer talent. But once Malone went down, our talent advantage wasn't large enough over the pistons so it came down to execution... and we weren't sharp there.
I didn't quite understand how you decided to blow the team up and go "super team" when you had won 3 in a row. Never got that at all. So we had one bad year where the Spurs went to the Finals. But that had more to do with complacency than talent... we would have won again had we stayed the course imo because we didn't need to integrate new guys. Kobe could have gone in his shell and it wouldn't have mattered. _________________ "He may say it's not you, it's him.... but it's really you." |

I really don't see how 2004 was on Kobe.. That wasn't a team Kobe could single handedly beat on his own. We lost it when Karl went down, otherwise we take that series. |

I don't quite remember the cap space rules back then. So, was there ever a chance to financially keep both Bryant and Oneal while making a championship roster? |

I still say 2004 was because they didn't retain Horry. Malone & Payton were signed to exemptions. If Horry is still on that team, Lakers offense would have run better when Malone wasn't available. |
