131 on the Road… The Lakers may have lost Josh Hart, but their offense certainly didn’t skip a beat tonight against the Heat.

The Lakers led 73-62 at the half. Their most points in a half this year. They were led by Julius Randle, who dropped 21 points on Hassan Whiteside and the Heat in that half.

The Lakers would bust the game open to start the fourth quarter off a series of threes by Isaiah Thomas. He would finish with a season-high 29 points as the Lakers blew out the Heat 131-113.

“It was beautiful to watch Isaiah in the fourth quarter again,” Luke said.

Not lost in all that was Lonzo Ball and his 6 steals. First win in Miami for the Lakers in 10 years. Let’s finish this road trip strong.

Ball -- -- He got the start with Josh Hart sidelined. Defensive reputations usually seem to lag behind the on-floor results. Lonzo’s defense as a rookie has been sensational. He was amazingly disruptive in this game with 6 steals and probably a couple more pass deflections on top of that. Some great blindside reads, not just reading the play but being decisive and aggressive about going for the steal or strip. His D will only get better with strength and experience. Young kids his age have no business doing the kind of things he’s doing on that end. There’s a lot of guys who are plenty athletic and have all the measureables you want on D, but Lonzo thinks the game exceptionally well. He led the team with a +24. He finished with the 6-6-6-6 minimum line tonight. “To me he was probably the best player on the court tonight,” Luke said. This is the kind of player who fits well with superstars. He can make such a big impact without dominating the ball. Some weak-ass foul calls against him tonight, a couple more and that would have been another 6 to the stat line. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-5 shooting (2-3 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 7 assists, 6 steals, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +24. The Action: He doubled the post, ripped the ball away and ignited the break. He knocked away a kickout to ignite the break again. He was stripped on a drive, turnover. He swished a deep three from the wing. Quick blindside to slap a ball away and hit Kuzma for the breakaway dunk. He blocked a shot from behind but was called for his third foul on another block attempt a second later. Second Half: He hit Lopez for three off the pick and pop. He threw a pass away next time down. He swished a corner three off a swing pass. He switched onto a big, then slapped the ball away from him from behind to ignite a break. He then found Ingram in the corner shortly later for a three. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He was blocked in transition. He swiped a pass at midcourt. He tapped out an offensive board to regain a possession a few seconds later and that led to a Laker three. He deflected a pass. He reached on Wade on help and knocked it loose. He curled into the paint, took contact off the jumpstep and scored the And-1, he missed the FT.

Randle -- -- It was like the Lakers were going to the body of the Heat in the first half with Randle delivering blows like Clubber Lang. He scored 21 points on 8-12 shooting in the first half as we scored 38 points in the paint. One of those baskets was a midrange jumper, the rest were all around the rim. Just a dominating first half to set the tone in this game. It didn’t matter that the Heat tried to throw length on him with Whiteside defensively. He’s too strong, too fast. Those freethrows have also been looking strong since his bad game a while back. He made all nine attempts from the line. That’s what I’m talking about. “He’s a beast,” Isaiah said. KCP: “We got a mismatch every night and we exploit it.” The Stats: He scored 25 points on 8-13 shooting (0-1 from three, 9-9 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnover and 2 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +15. The Action: He missed a post-up over Whiteside. He drained a 16-footer next time down. He scored an And-1 in the post over Whiteside off a quick spin, he made the FT. He attacked in transition and scored the layup with his offhand. He kicked out to KCP for an open three. He tipped in a missed shot. He took an advance pass, attacked, hung and reversed on his way down, damn. Bad angle post entry, turnover. He missed a jumphook in the paint. He scored an And-1 off an impromptu screen-roll with Thomas, he made the FT. he pushed a loose ball up and scored over his man. He rejected Whiteside and was fouled as he pushed out. He cut off IT’s drive, took the pass and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He missed a three on a kickout. He muscled his way through a double team and drew FTs, he made both. Second Half: Called for three seconds. He shed one man in the post, attacked and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He was fouled on a dunk attempt, he made both. He missed a FT jumper, getting hit with no call.

Ingram -- -- They sent him to the locker room after getting clobbered at the end of the game on a drive. He took an ice bath afterward and was listed as questionable. “I’ll see how it feels tomorrow,” Ingram said. We can’t afford any more injuries with Hart out and Brewer released. Offensively, he was attacking the rim quickly on the catch tonight. That kept the defense off balance. When that wasn’t there, he knocked down pull-ups from the midrange. Good job executing some of our set plays, especially to KCP to orchestrate the offense. What I like about Ingram and Randle right now is that both are consistently bringing impact game after game. That makes a huge difference. When you got your young guys delivering consistently…very good sign of things to come. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 8-14 shooting (1-3 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 1 block and 4 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: Quick attack on the catch off the three line and he scored a layup. He attacked baseline and fed KCP for a layup. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. Not close on an open lefty layup. He attacked in transition for a layup. He swished a pull-up wing jumper. He attacked and missed a tough fading attempt. He hit KCP curling off the double pindowns for a layup, then Lopez on the same set for a wing three. Second Half: He sank a wing jumper off the pinch post. Poor inbounds, turnover and points the other way. He couldn’t score over his man in the post. He iso’d and hit the wing pull-up jumper. He drained a corner three when Lonzo found him. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He sank a long pull-up jumper working off the double screen. He attacked with speed to his right, hung and banked in the layup. He kicked out to Isaiah for three. He missed a wing three. He was hammered in transition on the layup attempt (knee to the groin in the process, flagrant), he made both FTs.

Lopez -- -- I swear he’s one of the best big men in the league when it comes to hitting a running, off-balance jumper from about 15 feet. Those just seem automatic for him for some reason. He had one of those tonight, a couple of threes and a rare 20-footer. Defensively, he had a couple nice challenges but was kind of hit and miss at times anchoring the D. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-6 shooting (2-4 from three) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 block and 1 foul in 22 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He hit a hanging elbow jumper expecting a call. He lost the ball in the post, score the other way. He swatted a lob pass to ignite the break. He swatted a drive. He sank a 20-footer to just beat the shotclock. Same play we ran for KCP to get a layup, as the D went with KCP this time, Brook stepped out and hit the wing three. Second Half: He sank a three off the pick and pop with Lonzo. Short on a wide open wing three a couple possessions later. Swing pass to Lonzo for three. He missed a wing three falling back.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- We worked him off those double pindowns that we like to run for him. That resulted in layups or a foul from three, but also a three for Lopez as the defense got sucked to KCP when we ran that set three times in a row. Extremely efficient night for him with 18 points on just 8 shots. Defensively, he could have done a better job boxing out. He let a couple Heat players get runs at the rim to give up second chance points. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 6-8 shooting (2-3 from three, 4-6 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnover and 2 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He attacked from the corner in transition and scored a layup. He drained a three trailing the break. He attacked, hung and missed a tough attempt off the glass. He scored a layup in the paint off Ingram’s drive. He missed a three on the catch and shoot curling off the screen. He gave up an offensive board and scored. No box out and he gave up another score. He curled off the screen, took the pass and scored a layup. Next time down, he curled off the double pindowns, took the pass and scored a layup again. Second Half: Nice change up off the double screens, this time stopping on a dime and getting hit from behind on a pull-up three, he made two FTs. He hit Dragic in the chin as he pulled up on a jumper and the foul was called on him (just because you hit someone with your head instead of your arm doesn’t mean it’s not a foul). He was hit on a wing jumper, he made both FTs. He swished a three off a kickout. He missed a tech.

Kuzma -- -- He had 10 points on 4-7 shooting in the first half. We played him at both PF and SF with Hart’s absence as we slid Ingram to SG for a stretch. It will be good for him and the team. The more minutes we can get him acclimated to that position, the more versatile and valuable he is. Defensively, he had a couple blocks and battled well on the glass. Offensively, he drained three threes, hit from the midrange, made a running hook and had a dunk on the break. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-10 shooting (3-4 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and no fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: He drained a wing three. He was blocked on a throwdown attempt. He dunked on the break off the Lonzo steal. He drained a wing three off a good passing sequence next time down. He missed a wing three and a baseline jumper. He attacked off the three line and hit the lefty hook. Second Half: He blocked a shot from behind. He was fouled on the defensive glass for FTs. He sank a jumper at the FT line. He missed a quick-fire wing three. Nice challenge to get a stop. He drained a three in the final possession.

Thomas -- -- Season high for IT tonight with 29 off the bench. This was more like an average game for him last year. He had 13 points on 5-9 shooting and 5 assists in the first half, but was just getting warmed up. He sank a series of threes to start the fourth quarter that blew the game open. Really liked some of his finishes around the rim and breaking down the D a little off the dribble. He’s still not himself in those areas, but it was a little more lively tonight. Mix that in with setups to guys like Randle or Zubac and he keeps the D guessing. “He just does such a nice job mixing it up,” Luke said. He has some excellent chemistry going already with both Randle and Zubac. You can see him and Randle talking quite a bit. He finished 6-11 from three and the Lakers have been torching the nets from downtown lately. They shot 55% from three tonight and 81% from the line. Oddly enough, IT went just 1-2 from the line, breaking his streak from there. Defensively, really not an issue in this one. He rotated where he needed to and generally played smart on that end. He certainly didn’t do anything disruptive, but he wasn’t a negative factor. The Stats: He scored 29 points on 11-20 shooting (6-11 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 6 assists, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He missed a pull-up from midrange. He sliced through the D in early offense and scored a layup. He was picked from behind to give up a layup. He airballed a three in early offense. He curled into the paint, took the pass and hit the runner. He drained a three in transition next time down. He lobbed to Randle rolling for the And-1. No one matched up to him quickly enough in transition so he drained a deep three. He missed a wing three in transition. He attacked and was blocked from behind. He hit Randle cutting for an And-1. He busted out off the Lopez block, took the pass and scored a layup before the D could try to track him down. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs, he made just one (streak over). Second Half: He got into the paint and missed the runner getting undercut from behind with no call. He weaved between defenders and reversed with his right (his most IT-like finish since he’s been here). He swished a wing three off a kickout from Ingram. He drained a three off the handoff from Zubac. Next time down, he quickly knocked down a wing three off the high screen to force a timeout. He banked in a three off a set play out of a timeout. He split a double team and scored a layup down the lane. He missed a wing three. Great bounce pass to Zubac rolling for FTs. He worked off the high screen, drew defenders and whipped a no-look lob over to Zubac rolling for the dunk (perfect speed on that pass). He airballed a pull-up three in transition, not really open on that one. He was blocked on a pull-up at the elbow. He missed a deep three on a kickout. Travel, turnover. His pass in the paint was off the mark, turnover.

Zubac -- -- Loving the chemistry with IT out there. They teamed up on some pick and roll plays for scores, Zu getting fouled or finishing at the rim. Great job moving he ball, as well. He kept the ball hopping and found his shooters to finish with 4 assists on the night. Defensively, some good challenges at the rim. No blocks, but he had some moments. I want to see him send shots flying, though, with a real presence. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 1-3 shooting (4-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 18 minutes. He was a +19. The Action: He was fouled under the hoop for FTs, he made both. He deflected a pass. He hit Kuzma for the three. He missed a tough one in a crowd in the paint. Nice challenge to force a miss. He missed a baseline jumper. Second Half: He was stripped at the end of the quarter off a long pass. He was hit on a jumper with no call and missed. He challenged a shot on the other end to get a stop. He took a bounce pass on the roll and drew FTs trying to finish strong at the rim, he made both. He threw down the whip pass lob from IT on the screen-roll.

Ennis -- -- He came in for the final minute. The Stats: He had no stats in 1 minute. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nothing to note.

Bryant -- -- He managed to pick up a couple fouls and a turnover on one of those in his 1 minute of action. The Stats: He had 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 1 minute. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Quick foul on one end, then an offensive foul off ball on the other.

Payton -- -- I think we’ll really limit Caruso’s availability to keep him on the two-way contract that has no impact on the cap for the offseason. Payton came in for the final minute and had nothing noteworthy. The Stats: He had no stats in 1 minute. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nothing to note.

Walton -- -- The Lakers pushed out to a quick 9-point lead and forced a timeout. Good defense leading to transition opportunities… A 13-point lead was cut down to 6 and Luke called a timeout. Turnovers starting to hurt… IT in for Lonzo out of that… It was all tied up a couple minutes later when the next timeout came. Zubac in for Lopez and Kuzma in for Randle… A 17-2 run for the Heat during this stretch… The Lakers trailed 36-33 after the first quarter… He started a Zubac, Randle, Kuzma, Ball, Thomas lineup… Good D by this unit, Kuzma and IT on fire and they pulled out to an 11-point lead… They led 54-42 when Lopez, Ingram and KCP came in for Zubac, Randle and IT midway through the quarter… IT back in for Lonzo who picked up his third foul… IT out and Kuzma in, so tall lineup of Lopez, Randle, Kuzma, Ingram and KCP, Lakers up 11… Lakers led 73-62 at the half. The Lakers shot 63%. The Lakers had 22 points on the break and just 5 turnovers… They forced a timeout after an Ingram three that pushed the lead to 14… Up 12 with 4:42, Luke called a timeout. He brought in Kuzma for Lopez and IT for Lonzo… Zubac in for Randle, Ball back in for KCP… The Lakers led 104-94 heading into the fourth… He started the Zubac, Kuzma, KCP, Lonzo, IT lineup… Isaiah with a couple of threes to force a timeout… A couple more threes and the Lakers busted it open up 20 after 3 minutes… Randle in for Zu… KCP in for IT up 16… Heat cut it to 13 before a flagrant against Ingram seemed to take the wind out of the Heat run… Ingram out for IT… Lakers finally empty the bench as fans brought the loud “Let’s go, Lakers!” chants… The Lakers have scored an average of 120 points per game in their last 7…

- Lost Hart... but didn't skip a beat?
- Delivering blows like Clubber Lang?

Classic DB!

Damn, just reminded me I was going to mention that while Randle delivered the body blows, Isaiah went for the head and the TKO in the fourth. Doh. Oh well.

Gotta love that Clubber Lang analogy for Randle - it fits him right now.

Awesome job by the Lakers. In so many ways.

Kuzma showed he can come in at 3, fight hard on both sides of the court, and his defense tonight was far more effective than I expected out of him.

BI - keeps getting better and better. Just like we hoped. I wish the term 'untouchable' for Ingram would apply to opposing players' knees as well as trade status.

Hope he's OK, can play, and recovers.

One offshoot of us being so thin at 3 now - Luke's forced to play his seven foot centers more often, and by the looks of how we finish games that's a really, really good thing. Helps that Lopez can hit 3's in that regard.

IT - good chemistry with Randle and Zu out there! Clubber Lang softened them up in the early rounds, IT follows with the knockout flurry to the head. Down goes Miami! Down goes Miami!!

Will “Clubber Lang” be one of our budding stars next year - he is transforming his potential into production

Will IT be our Closer next year since Lebron and PG13 appears to be staying with their present teams as he recovers fully

With our future needs appearing to he a rim protecter

Good game that shows our potential

Maybe we won’t need to go the OKC route of getting superstars and assuming that this will win rings especially since none of them in 2018 are transcendent superstar (if Lebron only stays one year, how will this help the Lakers in the long run over our young players)

Thanks DB!

Thanks DB. I thought Lonzo was sensational tonight, and it's proof that you don't have to score a lot of points to seriously affect a basketball game.

Randle is proving that he is one of the two superstars, Lakers are aiming at this offseason. Remember how we all wanted to get Whiteside... JR is just better.
IMHO Randle is one season away from being established as a superstar. BI and Ball are on their way to the same fate. Hart and Kuzma are great role players with a promising upside themselves....
It will be enough to add one vet closer/superstar to this team to get to the playoffs. Add a few more vets who can play off the bench and mentor the developing young players and we are contenders in three seasons.

But I have no trust in patience of the front office.

Last wins have come against mediocre or tanking teams. Next one is San Antonio, right? Let's see if they can carry on winning.

Glad you didn't wait! First cut is good, who needs edits!

And of course, you got 21 more games to wax it! (plus "fingers-crossed" Lakers playoffs)

Defensive reputations usually seem to lag behind the on-floor results

And I might add, usually linger long after they've ceased to be valid. So rest assured, while it might take Lonzo a couple of years (and most helpfully a marquee playoff matchup or two) to establish a defensive rep for himself, if he does well on that end for a few years and then stops caring about D for the next decade or so, they'll still likely be talking about his defensive prowess at year 15.

And regarding Randle, I'm not the best lip reader, but I think at one point I did make him out barking at Whiteside, "I'll beat you like dog, people's champion!"

Missed the game. As always, thanks for the recap DB!
Were it not for contract issues, would Randle be in the same conversation as BI and Zo? Or is he still a tier below? It seems every game he's just dominating. Same thing with Brandon -- when was the last time he had a bad game?? Really impressive how consistently good BI has been -- even talented young players tend to be really streaky.

Agreed with your comment about Zubac and IT. Awesome chemistry on both the pick and roll and defense. Have Zu behind IT makes players hesitate to drive around IT to the bucket. Really helps our overall defense.
