Wow. That makes it even worse. Rather than just saying it was the wrong call, I hope they actually explain why it was ruled a jump ball, of all things. It’s not like there was confusion on what happened when you watch the replay. Ugh.

Again, WHY are we so concerned?? Refs have been butchering us all year and no one (including the league) gives a (bleep) or even acknowledges it.

Also you guys can say that “oh that play wasn’t gonna be successful anyway” totally miss the point.

They re-did it, but instead of redoing it by inbound, they did it by jump ball. That’s bad. That does not set a good precedent at all.

Every single fan base in the league says that about their team. That should tell you something.

It’s not that it was a bad call, it didn’t make any sense. Either let Orlando try again because of the distraction or the game is over because no Lonzo touched it. Calling it a jump ball it just so out of left field.

The officiating this year was been horrendous. There are a ton of bad calls every game, like 2 of lonzos fouls tonight were imaginary...

Yes, the refs have screwed the Lakers plenty of times this year. But that doesn't mean we should be pleased with bad... or just plain nonsensical officiating.

Yup. Every team has their myopic homers.

What made that call worse was the refs calling a foul with 0.6 that gave us the two FTs to go ahead and then they were apparently the ones responsible for the clock "malfunction".

it was a bad pass Zo got his hand on it. No magic was in position to do anything with it. I thought Zo would’ve knocked it out ouf bounds and time would ve ran out.

We're concerned because this call may eventually affect us in the future. Stupid reffing.

Lonzo caught the ball... that play the pass was so bad they didn’t even have a chance at a shot.

That call had ZERO impact on the outcome of the game

Fish says hi.

No but if the clock hadn't started prematurely the first time, game would've been over anyway. Still a frustrating way to lose, though.

Fisher shot happened 10+ years ago... that won’t happen in a scenario like that for probably a few dozen decades.

I’ll be awaiting your response when there’s a bad call that costs us a close game. (I won’t actually be awaiting but YKWIM)

on reddit they got out the rulebook and it says it's the actual rules

If neither side has possession and the clock expires and there's a clock malfunction then there's a jumpball in the center court

it's the dumbest thing ever but it's the rules

It goes nicely hand-in-hand with the opposite. If there's a clock malfunction causing time to remain on the clock, the game is over whenever the ref guesses time would have ran out despite there being time left on the clock.

All home teams should start utilizing that with under a second to play. Just have the timekeeper start the clock, and if the ball isn't caught it becomes an automatic jump ball. Home team wins!!!

Seriously, I just thought they were going to redo the play with 0.6 put back on clock. Oh, well. Sucks for the Magic.

If the clock hadn't expired (before it should have started), they would have taken about 0.3 off the clock, Magic's ball. But, because the "malfunction" involved running the clock all the way down suddenly it's a jump ball???

Doesn't have any sense to call jump ball. But I will take it. Basketball reasons.

I don't feel bad about that in the least bit. The Lakers had that play jammed up and it would've been over had no one (bleep) up.

Tell that to Fisher!!

But that is why we didn't need the help!

Would have rather won the game the right way.

On the other hand, if the clock hadn't malfunctioned Lonzo ends up with the ball and the game is over, unless you jive with the idea that Gordon stopped. It look like he played through to me though. Also, Orlando probably prefers the L for their draft playoffs.

What would have happened on that play is irrelevant. The clock was started too early, so the Magic should have gotten a second attempt. (Really a first attempt, since the time-keeper did not afford them the proper amount of time.)

If there's a lane violation on a missed free throw, who would have gotten the rebound is irrelevant.

Good point. Worst call in history could be that one.

It's as legit a choice as any for that distinction. Here are some others I thought of, and you have to have some boxing decisions in here, as corrupt as that sport has been:

--Don Denkinger's safe call on Jorge Orta's dribbler in the World Series. I mean, the dude was out by almost a full step. I note this one over Jim Joyce costing Armando Galarraga a perfect game (on a very similar play) because the Denkinger call very likely cost a team a World Series title.

--The Jeffrey Maier/Derek Jeter home run in the ALCS that shouldn't have been. The kid so obviously reached well over the wall, with the outfielder in position to make the catch. Should've been ruled an out, and, instead, it helped to get Derek Jeter's legend started. Speaking of which...

--The Tuck Rule call that cost the Raiders a playoff game against the Patriots. That helped to get Tom Brady's legend started. The Pats would've been a one-and-done playoff team in Brady's first run without that BS call.

--Roy Jones shamefully losing the decision in the Olympic final to his insanely overmatched South Korean opponent.

--Pernell Whitaker losing a split decision to Jose Luis Ramirez. It was like watching an in-his-prime Floyd Mayweather give a masterclass in boxing to an overmatched opponent...with the overmatched opponent being declared the winner. (Honorable mention: Whitaker's draw against Julio Cesar Chavez, where he also dominated the fight and should have won. But the loss to Ramirez was even worse.)

--The Lennox Lewis-Evander Holyfield draw, where Lewis clearly outclassed him and it wasn't close. Also known as the Eugenia Williams Debacle (she scored the fight for Holyfield), although another judge inexplicably had it as a draw.

--Any called "Strike 3!" from Eric Gregg in that infamous NLCS game between the Braves and Marlins. The final strikeout of the game was a called third strike on a pitch that was halfway in the other batter's box on Fred McGriff. (Honorable mention: there was a regular season game between the Rangers and the Rays a few years ago where the game ended on a called third strike on a Joe Nathan pitch that not only was way outside, but literally was dirt-level low. Just a regular season game, but possibly a more inexplicable strike 3 call.)

--Brett Hull's 1999 Stanley Cup-winning goal being allowed to stand, as his skate was clearly in the crease before the puck got there, which was against the rules at the time, no matter what Gary Bettman laughably said immediately afterward. The fact that they had instant replay at the time just makes it that much worse.

--"The Fail Mary", or the play where the Seahawks were awarded a TD by the replacement refs on the final play against the Packers, on what was an obvious interception, AND THEY HAD REPLAY!
