How do you celebrate college basketball history?
How about free pizza?
Little Caesars tweeted Friday evening that if a No. 16 seed were to beat a No. 1 seed in the NCAA men's basketball tournament that night, "you could score a Little Caesars Lunch Combo."
A pretty safe bet, considering no No. 16 had beaten a top seed in the tournament and the fate of the free pizza rested in the hands of Texas Southern and University of Maryland Baltimore County, who came into Friday night as 19.5- and 20.5-point underdogs to make history.
Then good things happened.
While Texas Southern played valiantly before eventually falling to Xavier 102-83, the Retrievers of UMBC suddenly became America's favorite team before many even knew a free lunch was in play.
UMBC went up double digits on the top-seeded Virginia and stayed there. In fact, they opened up their lead down the stretch, putting the Cavaliers away with a 74-54 rout.
The Detroit-based pizza chain confirmed they were serious with another tweet announcing that everyone in America will have lunch on them (*-while supplies last).
