So I wasn't feeling great and fell asleep yesterday during OKC/UTA and apparently I ended up missing the comeback of the millennium

Wasn't Towns rated as the #1 prospect in his draft class largely because of his potential defensive abilities? And with defensive specialist Thibs as coach, why isn't he better?

How is Minnesota still so good on defense with Towns as their anchor when he's so bad?

Thibs yelling his lungs out probably isn't getting thru to his players.

^^ Minn was 22nd in dRtg. They were NOT good on defense.
But they were 4th in oRtg.

That’s odd for a Thibs team...

I feel like Minnesota should have been a better team with the combo of Butler and Towns, with former #1 pick Wiggins as the third wheel...

Minnesota was #26 in Defensive Rating for the 2016 - 17 season.
2016 - 17 Defensive Rating

They brought Butler and Gibson in with LaVine going out in an effort to change the culture.

Minnesota was #22 in Defensive Rating for the 2017 - 18 season.
2017 - 18 Defensive Rating

So progress was made with the changes, but Towns and Wiggins haven't completely bought in to the idea of doing better on defense.

It worked out for the Lakers with Magic

You nailed it right on the head. Hopefully Thibs gets canned soon. If Thibs isn't there I could see Jimmy and Taj leaving first chance they get.

GOODRICH TELLS HIS SIDE IN JAZZ-MAGIC DEAL

Quote:

Gail Goodrich says that the subject doesn't come up all that often, and when it does it's usually distorted.

But he would like to make it clear that by point of actual fact, he is not the one basketball player in the history of the world who can say he was traded for Magic Johnson and three draft choices."That would be quite a compliment," said Goodrich yesterday from his office in Los Angeles, where he is an executive with the American Golf Corp., "but it isn't really true."

"There's a lot of misinformation with respect to that whole transaction," Goodrich said, referring to the 1976 deal when he signed as a veteran free agent with the New Orleans Jazz and the team he left behind, the Los Angeles Lakers - the franchise Goodrich helped to the NBA championship in 1972 - wound up with two first-round and one second-round future draft choices, one of which they used to eventually acquire the services of Magic Johnson...

...But as Goodrich explains, the Jazz later discovered that there would be more of a price to pay than that.

"Going in, the Jazz did not know they were going to have to give up all those draft choices for me," said Goodrich. "They made a deal with a free agent that they thought would help their team. But the league, in an effort to discourage free agency - I'm not sure they'll admit to this even now - stepped in and awarded the Lakers those draft choices as compensation.

"It was a big settlement that New Orleans eventually had to agree to. But not until there had been a lot of behind-the-scenes pressure from the league.

"The truth is, there was no trade at all as far as myself and the Jazz were concerned. The Jazz signed me, and then the league demanded compensation to the Lakers."

I'm excited to see how Snyder adjusts to OKC switching screen rolls.

Bucks manage to force it to a Game 7 in Boston.

It is going to be very difficult to win a Game 7 in Boston, but at least they have given themselves a chance.

They have the best player in the series for sure on their side so they have a shot.

Wizards-Raptors.....snooze, although it is funny to see a 1 seed struggling that much.

Cavs-Pacers...I think the Pacers win at home and force it to a Game 7. Cleveland needs someone besides LeBronster the Monster to step up.

Thunder-Jazz....this is the one I am really excited for. Jazz win and cover the points, George on a plane to LA straight from the arena.

Replacing Rubio with Teague isn't going to help your defense either, but Thibs always preferred scoring guards. And I remember Wiggins going into the draft had a ton of potential as a defender. That's a team that just looks burned out. Thibs doing thibs things.

I don't just want OKC to lose, I want them to get embarrassed and humiliated. I want a 40 point blowout where the announcers spend the entire 4th quarter completely ignoring the game and instead discussing "What happens now for OKC?". That will make me smile.

I rarely agree with the TNT crew in regard to basketball analysis, but all 3 of them (Shaq, Kenny, Chuck) stated they think it is ridiculous that Minnesota walks the ball up the floor and runs so many half court sets with their young talent.

I agree with this and feel it is a classic case of overcoaching.

That said, Tom Thib's screaming style did at least get them back to the playoffs for the first time since Captain Sprewell was sporting the Wolf wear.

They were going to make the playoffs regardless, but I think they underperformed compared to preseason expectations. Thibs is just a grinder, man. Their young guys regressed this season under him.

Couldn't agree more about pushing the tempo. Outside Butler, that team lacks the IQ and/or experience to run half-court offense all the time. They never took advantage of the young legs. By this point they're all burned out.

I'm mostly over Utah’s historic meltdown now, I think...

Putting my anger (and shock) aside and analyzing it with more objectivity, there's a ton that has to go right for OKC again in order to win. Is it likely that Russ drains five threes in the second half again? Nah. Is it likely that Gobert and Favors will both be in foul trouble at the same time again? Nah. Will a terrific coach like Snyder not adjust to OKC’s new screen roll defense? Nah. If Utah plays as well as they have in the games they've won, they'll win the game if they can hold both PG and Russ under 30.
