I would argue that Embiid is the first dominant real center (other than Dwight, but Dwight didn't have nearly the same versatility) we have seen in a long time.
Couple this with Philly's rapid rise from 10-72 just a couple years ago to their *cough cough* Eastern Conference favorites?? right now and they are this year's Cinderella team, besides Utah, so they are generating a lot of excitement.
We see a trend happening with bigger and bigger PGs or "forwards" who bring up the ball—if GS and HOU 3-ball gets thwarted by the likes of Simmons and Embiid in a couple years—might we see the NEW trend be, BIG multi-talent PG, paired alongside a big, multi-talent center? |
I'm still waiting for the 2 6'5"+ PG initiator lineup and 3 guys, roughly 6'8" to 7'1" that all play like SFs.
Not far from it. |
Pat Riley had a fantasy of an all 6-9 lineup, and he was more prescient than many thought |
Yeah, I think the quote when asked what his perfect lineup was back in the day he replied "5 Magic Johnsons". _________________ KOBE |

Position-less also entails that someone still has to guard a position!
For example, a bigger player who's more adept at playing a Point Forward Position, most likely wouldn't be able to guard a versatile wing or elite level point/combo guard ie. Kyrie Irving.
Mostly when you think of position-less, it's more catered to the offensive side of the floor, but most teams feel that having that benefit, they'd be willing to take chances on the defensive side of the ball.
We do have a few of players who fit the mold in, Ball + Ingram + Cuzma. Upcoming Free Agents who would fit that mold would be:
LeBron
Kawhi
George
GSW is blessed to have a player like Draymond, who can pretty much play every position on the court. But if you look closely at their team, GSW doesn't have an entire team who's committed to that concept. Curry and Klay are pretty much tied to their positions. You won't see Curry or Klay guarding a 4/5. If you do, that's a huge defensive liability. KD is also an exception, but I doubt you see him matched one-on-one with Kyrie or Westbrook too often.
Positionless is great, but it's all about need and "TEAM-FIT", if it's too much of a defensive liability, then it won't happen which is mostly the case at this level, these guys are pros. You can definitely get away with it at the High School and NCAA College levels. |

Well, positionless basketball does factor in the defensive side via switching rather than 1-on-1 D. |

Kevin Durant doesn't qualify for this team, because he's 7' tall... LOL |
