Nothing "fast" about In-n-Out.

I once drove by the In N Out on sunset near la brea and saw that there were 0 cars in the drive-thru. I'm not a huge fan of in n out but I had to pull into it just to see if the store wasn't closed. Went through the drive-thru, someone spoke to me, and I had to get food. In n out in less than 10 minutes...first world miracle.

I’m glad to hear you say that. I was in California last year, and I decided to try it. It was good, but I was startled by how slow it was. I thought I must have just caught them on a bad day or something. I’m not sure why people get so excited about the place, but when they spread into Houston, I’ll go there from time to time.

It's notorious for long lines and slow service. I rarely have it because of that. It's good, but not good enough to put up with the hassle. I pretty much only eat In-N-Out when it's catered these days. Occasionally I'll take the kids as a special treat, but even they will often pass when they see a long line of cars.

The idea of in n out has always been more important than the actuality. Even the slavish devotion to fresh, locally sourced beef (which is in and of itself an overrated concept) means little when you throw it on a griddle and serve it on a (bleep) bun, along with very mediocre fries.

Wouldn't really call it slow service as much as massive volume. When you're number 85 and they're calling number 63 - it's going to take a while. Especially since the drive-thru isn't included in the numbering.

If you want your food faster - skip the fries. That's the biggest backup, and they're chalky anyways.

For whatever reason, my two fast food weaknesses were (I don’t eat much of it anymore) Arby’s roast beef and the fried zucchini at Carl’s Junior.

It's been so long since I had Arby's roast beef. The horsy sauce with that sandwich it to die for. LOL.

The 2 Arby's near my house have been closed since 2015. Arby's gets hate... but damn were those sandwiches good. I would crush 2 of them with that Arby's sauce and even mix some ketchup with the sauce for my fries.

Bout to drive 25 miles to the closest Arby's now... thanks a lot.

I liked it. I agree that the fries were sort of blah. I was struck by the number of people who were ordering like six or eight burgers at a time. I guess you west coasters really like burgers. I don't think I've seen anyone buying boxes of burgers here. But then, I don't think we have any burger chain that is a mass production operation like In-N-Out. It was sort of fascinating to watch. The popular chain in this region (Whataburger) is the opposite in just about every way you could imagine.

Yeah, it’s not a bad burger, it’s just not significantly different than the burger you can get in a lot of joints.

In and out's overrated, burgers are thin and dry, habit overall is better

Ha. Yeah, I think its location dependent. I usually go to either the one in Orange or the one in Laguna Hills. In either location, I have never had more than 5 people in front of me.

Can't even believe people are disparaging In N Out!

There's a 95% chance that any time that you walk into one, no matter the time of day, it's going to be packed. There's a reason for that. It just tastes good and, yes, fresh. And since the prices are good and since their workers are generally far more competent and friendly than other national chains, there's your business model right there. Sure, Five Guys or The Habit probably have a bit of a better burger, but you're also going to pay quite a bit more for a burger there.

I agree that their fries aren't the best; they kind of taste like potato chips to me. McDonald's still has the best fries of any of the major burger franchises.

In n out is a cult thing, and like most cults, belief is what matters. You can find a lot of things that are packed (ever see a professional wrestling match, a tractor pull, or a rodeo? All packed) without being superb.

Pretty much the only fast food I eat is Chik-fil-a and In n out. I pretty much only opt for grilled chicken, and maybe I'll grab a burger during off peak times from In n out
