High schools have had security guards patrolling their campuses for a while, and more and more of them have been switching to actual police officers on campus. How is that not enough?

IMO the sight of armed uniformed officers is disarming to students. If you're going to have gun toting individuals on campuses why not disguise them as, say, hall monitors dressed as civilians?

Here’s an idea. Why don’t we stop this whole thing where we treat our youth like unobservant idiots. The idea that kids aren’t going to notice that there are people pretending to be school employees doing routine things while they are actually armed guards is ridiculous. Kids know what’s going on in their day to day world, especially in this world where they have access to information in the palm of their hand. They aren’t going to be fooled by ‘undercover security’ and acting as if they just insults their intelligence in a place their intelligence should be stimulated and nurtured.

Here’s the other thing. Schools aren’t airports, courthouses or sporting events where individuals occasionally go a few times over the course of years. Schools are an everyday part of kids’ routines for a dozen plus years . . . Their formative years. The day to day reminder of armed “protection” in the place they go to to learn and build their esteem and confidence totally destroys any real sense of safety where safety should be a given without the need to be constantly reminded they are at risk.

Address the sources of the problems, not the symptoms.

I agree with addressing the source. How do we do that?

I don't like the idea of turning learning institutions into armed fortresses. IMO it would impede the ability to concentrate on learning.
