Great game, The 1-0 though was definitely a dive by Ronaldo.

I don't think I've ever been less excited for a World Cup for a number of reasons. I didn't watch a minute of the first three games. ....BUT, I watched every minute of this one. What a game! Ronaldo is god.

I don't know football as well as you diehards, but even a novice like me can see the talent in these two teams tonight.

Spain made some blunders defensively, but their passing and ball control is uncanny, really good stuff.

Ronaldo willed that last goal in, you could see him deep breathing and visualizing it before he did it. Incredible stuff on the biggest stage from a true world class athlete.

I was really worried that Ronaldo was going to do that to the US team in 2014. There was talk about how he was going to expose and destroy the US defense. Glad he waited until this World Cup to have a game like that.

I find it interesting that some of the pundits underrate Iceland as much as they do. This isn’t a bunch of Viking cosplayers who took a wrong turn on the way to the Faroe Islands. They qualified out of UEFA and won their group. Italy, the Netherlands, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Greece, and others didn’t make it. Iceland may not get out of its group, but they are not a fluke.

Argentina and France look overrated, but that’s not a shock. Messi is getting a lot of flak, but the keeper just made a good save on the penalty. The team didn’t look very lethal.

Schmeichal really came through. That Peru penalty kick was just embarrassing, though.

from just a casual soccer viewer I cant help notice that from Ronaldos goals:
goal one: penalty kick... that like hitting your free throw you better make it
goal two: more of a goalie mistake
goal three: VERY impressive kick BUT shouldnt that free kick wall have been setup better to seal off that side of goal??

I've never been a soccer fan... But my buddy is a die-hard US/American Outlaw. Dude has actually travelled to different States and countries to watch games.

Im waking my azz up at 6am tomorrow to go watch a few games and BBQ at his house. Should be fun.

We were actually considering driving to Vegas tonight and placing some money on a few underdogs just to make things more interesting. $100 on a 150/1 team... $15k? Sure, why not? Lol

The free throw analogy isn’t quite right. No matter how well you take the shot, there is always a chance that the keeper will guess right and save it. With that caveat, it’s a fair analogy. It may be possible to hit a virtually unsaveable shot into the top corner, but that is not a free throw, which is why few shooters do it.

Otherwise, a goal scorer’s job is to score goals however he can. Some of the goals are going to be cheap, and some are going to be defensive errors. Relatively few goals are artistic highlight reel shots where the defense was perfect. But scoring is still the rarest skill in the game. Bloop hits are still singles, and Tom Brady still gets credit for the TD when the defensive back falls down.

France [bleeh].

Love what Pogba does on the field, but he embodies what the French national team is: half-in, half-out, never totally committed. They need some no-nonsense manager to bring out the best in some of these players (Zidane maybe?) after this world cup.

FWIW, Ronaldo made his penalty against one of the best goalkeepers in the world. When you shoot a free throw, nobody from the opposing team is there to stop you.

TBH, great goalkeepers don't always have correspondingly good penalty records. DDG and Buffon both have about a 31% penalty save rate. Great Keepers can have up to save rates up in the forties. Remember Diego Alves? In 2016-2017 he saved 47% of his penalties in 2016-2017 in La Liga competitions setting a new record. It's a specialist skill that a few keepers have, but it's not as important as positioning, technique, strength, and the ability to play the ball.

Great win by Mexico, so much for my Germany pick, lol.

I wouldn't want to be playing Germany in the next game.

Cheers to Mexico, but this supports my premise that the big teams are overrated this cycle. Maybe Brazil will be the exception, but none of the favorites have looked impressive.
