Capable 3pt Shooters:

Lopez

Average 3pt Shooters:

Ingram
Deng
Hart
* Lonzo
(Based on his lifetime of shooting and expected improvement)

Poor 3pt shooters:

Lance
McGee
Zubac

So they have 5 guys you expect to hit a 3 point shot, 4 guys that can hit it a 3rd of the time, and 3 guys who can't, nor are expected to. Overall, they won't be one of the leagues best 3 point shooting teams, but more importantly - they'll no longer be the worst like last season. Bottom line, this is a better shooting team than last seasons team.

Hart shot 40 % last year and was our best shooter, I believe he can totally be our best shooter this year too

Kuzma is going to absolutely blow up under LeBron.

I think Lonzo and Hart will also surprise with their 3 point percentages and BI is getting better and better from there.

I see it as an area to watch, but not overly concerned....we need a big man center who can make open shots though which is why BRO LO would seem to make perfect sense now.

Yeah Imo it's probably best at this stage to bring Lopez back. Need his shooting.

Would be nice to get Tyreke Evans, but I don't see it happening.

Oh man, that's not good.

Melo is such a negative on a team. He killed OKC last season, doesn't matter if he can score or shoot. He will kill this team.

I don’t think he’s a cancer. He just needs to realize he’s a roof player now and not an mvp candidate.

Bet Stephenson shoots 38% or better from three this season.
KCP will too. Ingram 40%, Kuz maybe even higher.
Lopez will do his thing (hopefully we sign him.)
Hart 38%+, Lonzo will be better. Moe? Their not in as dire straits as people are making it imo.
Even Rondo will be around 38% imo. Rondo shot 42% from three in the playoffs by the way.

Obviously they are not the greatest 3 point shooting team, but alot of our young guys are unknown at this point. They should be pretty good defensively though.

This thread has reassured me somewhat.

Hopefully we can gameplan against the Warriors with our defense, instead of trying to outshoot them.

Just a reminder that KCP shot 42% from 3 after the All star break. That's not Curry or Korver, but it was better than, say, Klay Thompson over the same period.

PostPosted: Thu Jul 05, 2018 2:59 am    Post subject: Three point shooting - am I missing something?

First i do know last year we were supposingly the worst 3 point shooting team at one point in the season. So, there's a lot of concern, that Lebron won't have shooters to space the floor given our recent free agent signings.

However I was looking over the 3 point % from last year of our potential starters + key reserves and to my suprise our outside shooting seems far from dire. This is what I saw

Josh Hart 39.6%
KCP 38.3%
Ingram 39%
Ball 30.5%
Kuzma 36.3%

Am I missing something, because all the numbers look fairly respectable with the exception of Ball. I also expect the percentages of our starters to go up as they will now have wide open looks courtesy of Lebron. From the numbers, it seems like Lebron would have more than adequate help when he kicks it to he outside.

Is it really that essential that we had look for a shooter instead of signing someone like Rondo for example? Or is the shooter concern an example of making a mountain out of a molehill?

We added SVI and Mo in the draft, plus we got Lance and Rondo in free agency and although they are poor 3 point shooters they have a penchant of making them in clutch situations. Rondo and Lance will let them fly when provoked.

You took only the top shooters of the team, except for Lonzo. Our average was 34.5% from 3pt, just ahead of Phoenix (33.4%). To be in the middle of the pack, we need 36% and only 6 out of 24 players in the Lakers had that % last year; only 4 if you make a 20+mpg cut: Hart, BI, KCP and Kuz (barely).

Thanks, that's a great insight. Just to continue the discussion, this is our current depth chart

Lakers Depth Chart

PG: Ball / Rondo / Caruso*
SG: KCP / Hart / Newman*
SF: Ingram / Stephenson / Svi
PF: Lebron / Kuzma / Deng / Wagner
C: McGee / Zubac

Most of the guys who brought down our team 3% are no longer here, like Tyler Enis 25%. In addition, our rookies Wagner and Svi are both shooters. Svi - in particular - seems to have a really pure stroke.

On our regular rotation for 2018-19, it seems only Ball/Rondo and Stephenson would be problems from 3 point land. I doubt Ball and Rondo would see significant minutes together on the floor. Stephenson % (28.9 yuck) is a problem but I don't know whether he would actually see meaningful minutes. Lebron can always slide down to the 3 position with Kuz at pf when Ingram needs a breather

It does seem outside of the center position, there would likely be only one 3 point liability on the floor at any one time next season. That seems to me to be pretty ok.

The more I look at the rotation, the more I think we should just re-sign lopez and call it a season. Lets the core players jell and who knows this team might suprise us.

I was actually pleasantly surprised to see Rondo has been hitting the 3 fairly consistently the last 3 seasons. He's got something like 160 makes at a 36% clip. Not world beating or nothing but very respectable.

Also yeah don't sleep on Svi, that kid can shoot it. His form is beautiful.

I think management (reasonably) expect a jump in percentage from the kids. I don't think Lonzo shoots 30% next year I think he makes a huge jump year 1 to year 2...which is scary.

Plus you need to consider that the kids have never played with a player with the level of gravity LeBron dictates. They're be shooting far more open shots than they did last year. There's gonna be a lot more lobs too.

I think they're trying something different than the age old "surround LeBron with 4 dudes who can shoot it.

I also don't think they're done with this roster yet.
