Off to a Good Start… With their brief stint in Sacramento, the Lakers have hit Vegas with a running start.

They pulled out to an early double-digit lead against the Bulls tonight, but the Laker bench gave most of that up before the first quarter was over. When the starters returned, they stretched it back up to a 6-point lead at halftime behind some hot three shooting by Josh Hart.

Strong team D at times by the starters helped the Lakers close the Bulls in the second half. L.A. only had 8 turnovers in the game, eliminating any easy transition opportunities for the Bulls, as well.

Once again, they didn’t lose a quarter in this one as they took the 69-60 win.

Hart -- -- Once again, he was the steadying force for the team. He heated up in the second quarter and started knocking down threes. He had 16 points in the first half on 5-8 shooting (4-5 from three). He was able to manufacture some points attacking the paint, as well. He had a couple nice passes off the two-man sequences, one a pocket pass to Moe for the massive dunk. Defensively, very strong. In fact, all the starters were playing well together. Not a single Bull starter had double digit scoring. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 5-15 shooting (4-7 from three, 5-5 form the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +20. The Action: He missed a tough turnaround from the mid post. He sank a three on a kickout. He missed a three on iso. He attacked and went down with contact and no call, missing the layup. He sank a pull-up wing jumper off a handoff going to his left. He swished a wing three in early offense. He swiped a kickout and was intentionally fouled. He sank a pull-up wing three against a switch. He drilled another three from the wing off a handoff when the D gave him a hair of space. He attacked the rim and drew FTs, he made both. Second Half: He missed a step-back three off the catch. He set up Moe for the soaring throwdown off a pocket pass on the two-man game. He missed a layup on a drive. He missed a pull-up three in transition. He airmailed an outlet pass out of bounds. He made a tech FT. He attacked and was blocked. He missed a step-back wing jumper. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs in the paint, he made both. Great feed to the rolling King for a dunk. He missed a fading pull-up jumper. He tripped and couldn’t finish.

Wagner -- -- He was off the mark from just about everywhere, going 1-9 in the first half for 2 points, but did have 8 boards in the half and finished the night with 14. He’s really done a much better job challenging shots at the rim and controlling the glass in the past couple of games. Very disruptive there tonight. Those first couple of games, there was no interior presence. So a good sign. Again, he’s shown a lot of ability to get into passing lanes on the perimeter or step around his man in the post for steals. His footspeed and length to get passes is one of his best skills defensively. We finally started to see him getting out on the break with speed as the team’s tempo has picked up. He had a nice lob throwdown to finish on break. With the Lakers letting Lopez walk without an offer, they are going to rely on Moe to put in some decent minutes next season at the C spot. Glad to see him having more of a presence defensively right now. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-15 shooting (0-4 from three) to go 14 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks and 4 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He missed a pick and pop three straight away. He swatted a jumper in the paint. He was blocked on a turnaround that was telegraphed, got it back and missed a short one in the paint. He kicked out to Caruso for a three off the short roll. He faked at the three line, attacked and hit a pull-up fade from about 15 feet. He settled for a long turnaround and missed instead of trying to back down a smaller man. He missed a three straight away. Up upfaked and his man fell, but then he airballed the three. He missed an open 16-footer. He missed a jumphook in the post. He poked a post entry pass away to ignite a break. He was blocked on a layup attempt after a steal. Second Half: Soaring dunk off the great bounce pass from Hart on the wing screen-roll. He missed a short one straight away. He threw down a lob on the break (great job getting down court). He blocked a drive. He missed a deep three on a busted play. He outlet to Svi for the throwdown (a little too much air on that pass as it hung up there a bit). Good effort to almost hit a falling down jumper before the shotclock went off. He cleaned up a missed jumper. Nice challenge again on help D at the rim.

Mykhailiuk -- -- His perimeter shot wasn’t falling early on, but I liked that he was able to be disruptive defensively during that stretch. He challenged shots and forced his man into a couple of bricks. He also had 3 assists to lead the team in the first half. In the second half, there was a play where he knew he missed the three as soon as it left his hands, tried to follow it, but couldn’t get it. He seemed ticked by that and starting hounding the ball handler all the way up court. He nearly forced a backcourt violation before finally stealing the ball from him. Loved that. Some of the shooters we’ve compared him with previously don’t get after it on D like that. He led the Lakers with a +31. At the end of the game, even though it looked like he was having an inefficient night, he still finished with 50 percent shooting and knocked down a couple threes. Good looking numbers despite his struggles. Love that, too. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-12 shooting (2-6 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 22 minutes. He was a +31. The Action: He missed a wing three on a kickout that was a little off the mark. He sank a wing three on a swing pass on his next touch. He attacked the paint next time down and drew FTs, he made one. He scooped up a loose ball and missed a three. He jumped a passing lane to swipe a ball. Extra pass to Caruso for the three. He blocked a drive. He was called for a travel on an attack off the three line from the corner. He forced his man into a brick on iso D. He sank a pull-up 17-footer straight away. He missed a wing three flashing to the ball. He missed a step-back wing jumper. Second Half: He scored a putback layup crashing the glass. He spun away from the screen on the three line, attacked and scored a layup. He missed a pull-up three in transition. That kind of ticked him off so he hounded the ball handler up court, nearly forced a backcourt violation, before poking the ball away to Wagner who outlet to Svi for the throwdown. He popped out behind a screen, took a pass and hit a three. He missed a pull-up 21-footer.

Caruso -- -- Much better game from AC. No turnovers tonight. In fact, the team had 8 turnovers in total. Defensively, he had some excellent sequences where he locked down to get stops or stepped in again to take a charge. He probably leads the team in taking charges so far this summer league. Offensively, he sank a couple of threes early on but cooled off as the game went along. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-8 shooting (2-5 from three) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +29. The Action: He took the handoff, attacked baseline and scored the layup. He sank a three on a kickout. He sank a corner three off a swing pass. He crossed over and was blocked from behind on a dunk attempt. Nice anticipation to draw a charge on the perimeter. Second Half: He missed an open wing three. He missed another wing three. He lobbed to Moe on the break for the dunk. He missed an open sideline three. He bricked a turnaround in the paint. Great help and recovery onto his man, then he forced him into a travel on iso D.

Williams -- -- Slightly more active than the stats showed. It seemed like he was a hair away from a number of offensive boards and yet didn’t come away with any. Offensively, no scores. He choked a point-blank lob with no one around. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 3 boards and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +27. The Action: He choked a perfectly set up lob with no one around to start the game. He missed a corner three on a kickout. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Rathan-Mayes -- -- His best play of the night was a drive to draw defenders before dumping it off to Bonga for the layup. Otherwise, very quiet night. The second unit struggled and coughed up the Laker lead tonight. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-7 shooting (0-2 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He missed a tough three on iso against the clock. He attacked off a hesitation and couldn’t finish through the contact. He bricked a three on a kickout. He attacked down the lane and was held for FTs, he made one. He missed a turnaround three trying to beat the buzzer on an inbounds. He stripped a man on drive. He attacked the offensive zone with speed, drew the D and dumped it to Bonga for the layup. Off balance defensively, he gave up a layup. He was stripped on an iso drive. He got it back with a strip the other way a few seconds later. Second Half: He sank a pull-up wing jumper off a brush screen. He attacked and was stripped. He was swatted out of bounds.

Bonga -- -- Man, he has some happy feet at that three line. I need to go back and look at some of his overseas game footage to see him attacking off the catch. Dude just shuffles his feet every time before putting the ball down and was getting whistled for it again and again tonight (and last night). The Lakers team had 8 turnovers and he had 4 on travels. Easily correctable problem, but it’s a bit shocking to see it so much in two games. He also had a travel on a spin move where he doesn’t hold a pivot foot. Thought he might have been called for it twice, but they got him just the once. He scored his two buckets tonight around the rim. One was a drive and dish from a guard. Another was a nice putback. According to Simon, Bonga is the only player he’s been told to make sure he gets in the game. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -20. The Action: He traveled again on a kickout to the three line. He threw a loose ball of a Bull to regain possession. He crossed over and drew FTs in the lane, he missed both. He scored a layup off a drive and dish from Rathan-Mayes. Second Half: Another travel off the catch at the three line. He attacked, spun and traveled again. He crashed the glass and scored a putback. He took a rebound coast to coast and couldn’t finish. He attacked, spun and missed but the dribble penetration was cleaned up. Another travel attacking on the catch at the three-point line again. Nice help D challenged.

King -- -- His perimeter shot wasn’t falling so he attacked quite a bit. He had a nice And-1 drive where he took out a baseline cameraman in the process. Good to see him mix it up like that by going to the rim strong. He’s been one of the more consistent bigs to make an impact. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-10 shooting (0-2 from three, 4-6 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 1 assist and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He missed a deep wing three. He missed a jumphook in the paint after getting low position. He missed a lefty layup in transition. Second Half: He was fouled on a corner three, he made just one FT. He was blocked on a drive. He attacked, spun and muscled in a layup. He attacked again and drew FTs, he made both. He crashed the glass to clean up some dribble penetration by Bonga. He missed a wing three. He dunked on the roll to the hoop. He attacked the rim and scored a layup before taking out a cameraman, he made the FT. He missed a turnaround fade.

Newman -- -- He forced it a bit. Just never seemed in sync offensively. There was one three in the second half you knew he was going to force up because he wanted to get a shot off as soon as he touched it. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-4 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 1 steal in 10 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He missed a runner up against the clock. He missed a wing three. He deflected a high entry pass on a mismatch to get a stop. Second Half: He forced up and bricked an iso three. He missed a drive.

Ayres -- -- I’ve got no notes on him in his 12 minutes out there. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot and had 3 boards, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Looks like Bonga will be playing in the G league while the other 2 rooks look like rotation guys.

Don't imagine we'll be seeing much more of Hart in SL. He's doing great but we've seen enough.

Moe has shown some fire mixing it up on both ends of the floor. His potential seems to have a mixture of both JR and BroLo's strong points. Fire and hustle combined with a 3 pt shot.

SVI sure was a solid pick. We've been killin' it on the 4-year draftees like Nance, Hart and SVI.

The jury is still out on "Happy Feet" Bonga. Hope it's just a matter of him settling into his new situation and getting comfortable out there. He will have a chance to do that in the G League.

I kind of like seeing Hart play - he's a steadying influence for the rest of the team and provides an example for his teammates of the level of proficiency it takes for them to be a solid NBA rotation player.

SVI looks like he could step onto the Lakers roster right now and play the role of outside shooting threat.

I really like Wagner, but I'm not as confident he can do what he does against top tier competition in the NBA without some G League time. Strength, handles.

Bonga - definitely needs some development time, but I'm very impressed by the amount of ground he can cover quickly. High ceiling low floor.

Bench really stunk it up. 7 for 27 from the floor to go with 6 of the 8 turnovers. If they want to be the summer league champs that is going to have to improve.

In the post game interview Miles Simon talked about how they need to clean up Issac Bonga’s feet shuffling. Good eye in your comments!

Yeah... unless there is a strong case for someone needing work in a particular area, anyone who is playing significant minutes in the regular season should not be in Summer League. It is not a great place to further your game, since it is always against poor competition.

I recall that Hart has been lobbying the coaching staff super heavily to let him keep playing. I think he was originally only supposed to play 2 game total
